The holiday was originally celebrated on February but later on was moved to November 1st. During the Celtic times, November 1st was their new year. Today’s society certainly doesn’t celebrate Halloween for the same reasons as it used to be celebrated. During the ancient times it was a day to rid of the evil spirits and scare them away. It was not a day for fun, and definitely not a day for trick or treating. When people thought of Halloween, they thought of the end of their summer, the end of their harvest, and the start of the dark winter. Individuals thought of this day as a spirit filled day. People didn’t dress in costumes for amusement; they dressed in them to shock away evil spirits. Throughout time, costumes have changed to silly, not as grueling costumes. People now dress up as their favorite super heroes, fruits, or even whoopee cushions. Halloween is mostly for laughs and entertainment now. Halloween is all about the candy for the little ones and getting to roam around the neighborhood. For the adults, it’s a great excuse to get drunk. In the present day, Halloween represents a spooky, but fun filled day. Halloween now is all about the candy corn, cartoon ghosts, and cute frilly pumpkins. This day is mostly for the kids, and the fun of getting to dress up in something that would normally not be acceptable on a normal day. As the crowds of people roam around the neighborhoods, kids belt out the famous lines “Trick or Treat!” People no longer use jack o lanterns to guide spirits to the food left out for them. Jack-o-lanterns are now carved
The things people did earlier in time on Halloween is to have a festival to say that summer's over. The other thing is that the doors open to let souls into our world. There are so many beliefs of the history of halloween like for dead souls to get revenge on their enemies before they move on to the next world. Before the pumpkin people used radishes. They carved the radishes like we carve pumpkins.
To better understand the history of the two holidays, we should look at where it all first began. An ancient Celtic festival of Samhain about 2,000 years ago was when Halloween was first created. This celebration took place on October 31st and it marked the end of summer, the harvest and the beginning of winter. During this time, winter resembled a cold and dark time which was often
Dia de los Muertos and Halloween can often be confused because they are celebrated within very close dates, but in reality they have distinct characteristics. Dia de los Muertos was originally introduced in Mexico with the Aztec Festival of the Dead, but the traditions have been tweaked over the years. Likewise, Halloween originated in Ireland, beginning with the Celtic Festival called “Samhain”. Now, the popular holiday, Day of the Dead, is celebrated from October 31st through November 2nd by visiting the graves of dead friends or family members. People who participate in Dia de los Muertos leave food, candles, incense, a poem, or a picture at the altar to honor the past lives of people they love.
Halloween and Dia de los Muertos. These are very different holidays, but have multiple similarities. People all around the world celebrate both of these occasions. Even though there are differences between these two holidays, there are also many similarities. Halloween starts on October 31st.

They would connect this time of year with death, but not the same way as Dia de los Muertos. On Halloween, we don't celebrate death unlike you would on Day of the Dead. They believe that from October 31st-November 2nd was a time to celebrate the dead. Dia de los Muertos is a day to remember your loved ones and to celebrate death, and to
" The pagans in Rome celebrated their Thanksgiving in early October. the holiday was dedicated to the goddess of the harvest, Ceres and the holiday was called, Cerelia. Catholic Church took over the pagan holiday and it became well established in England, where some of the pagan customs and rituals for this day were observed long after the Roman Empire had disappeared. In England the 'Harvest Home 'has been observed continuously for centuries."
Actually the tradition of carving pumpkins comes from an Irish folktale. This tale is about an unusual man whose name is Stingy Jack. It originated in Ireland because long ago large turnips and potatoes were used for carving faces. When Irish immigrants arrived in America they could carve out pumpkins. The story of Stingy Jack comes from an Irish myth where Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him.
Ásatrú/Odinism Odinism, or more commonly know Ásatrú, is an ancient religion which predates Christianity and originated in Iceland and Scandinavia. It was also practiced in various forms and names, throughout Europe, and even into Russia. This pre-Christian religion has a wide pantheon of Gods and Goddesses. The Day of the Dead and Halloween are alike in many ways. During the Day of the Dead, people dress in costumes and celebrate their dead loved ones returning to them. Similarly, on Halloween, people also dress in costumes and go “Trick or Treating”. Both holidays also come from Catholic roots, and believe the veil between the living and dead worlds is thinnest on these days. During the Day of the Dead celebrations, people cook, eat, and have a party, similar to what others do on Halloween.
(It is not the same thing as Halloween.) However, once the Spanish started migrating things changed a bit. The Catholics especially did not like the pagan nature of the holiday and therefore tried to rid of it completely by changing the date to November 1st and 2nd and changing the name to All Saints’ Day. However, the holiday continued and is celebrated to this day.
Mardi Gras During Mardi Gras people enjoy history, traditions, costumes, and fun. How and when did New Orleans become a popular Mardi Gras destination? Mardi Gras came to North America from Paris. There was a French explorer by the name of Iberville. Iberville along with his men explored the Mississippi River.
One of the most-awaited moments of the year is right here once again. Dim neighborhoods are brightened by ghastly smiles of Jack-o '-lanterns in communities where the breeze is also slowly getting colder and the leaves that have fallen off of pines give each step a crunch. In a few days, children dressed like pirates, princesses, ghouls, and little monsters will be knocking on doors requesting goodies and several other goodies. Yet just before Halloween begins, you can delight the kids in your community by teaming up with several moms and dads and arranging a Halloween scavenger quest.
My Movie Argument What do you think? What would you argue? What theme do you think the movie is? Some people believe the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas is more of a Halloween and some people believe that this movie is more Christmas themed.
Between 1920 and 1950, the centuries-old practice of trick-or-treating was also revived. Trick-or-treating was a relatively inexpensive way for an entire community to share the Halloween celebration.
