It has been said the chief interest of The Iliad is that we can find in it answers to fundamentally important questions, characteristics of European or Western culture, a sense of the tragic, domestic comedy, scepticism of the role the divine in human life, admiration for the strength of the individual human will, pleasure in the kind of heroic conflict that elicits a moral pride and a fascination with the interaction between moral choice and political life in the community. Is the author of The Iliad and The Odyssey the same, the question to which we will come back, and when were these poems composed and how were they composed, in an age of which evidence for literacy is very slight. Now in this we are concerned when and how, the second question the relationship between The Iliad and The Odyssey poet, we won’t dwell. As to the first question as to who is the author of the Homeric poems is, I will come a little later. As to the date of the epics I wish I could give you a visual timeline, but let’s do it verbally. It is tenable now that The Iliad and The Odyssey were composed somewhere around 750 BC. They are telling the story however of a society which seems to have flourished something like 1600 to around 1200 BC. So Homer is singing about a society considerably prior to his own. The traditional date for the fall of troy is 1184 BC. In this case, I will be comparing the two similar texts, The Odyssey and Sundiata: An Epic of Old Mali. Both of these two tables show the characters, Sundiata and Odysseus, long quests of pursuing and accomplishing a certain objective. To reach their goal, both characters encounter obstacles and enemies who want to stop them on their prolonged journey.
The pathos and ethos of cultures is often discernable in literary narratives as expressions of the sentiment of approval or disapproval. Thus, the impact of literary narratives on cultures cannot be understated; the arts do impact and influence culture in both positive and negative ways. This is not a new phenomenon and can be observed in cultures as early as 6 Century B.C. and can be traced throughout human history. An example of this can be seen in Homer’s Odyssey, in which there are certain characters within the narrative that portray what is known as “arete.” Arete is viewed as a desirable character trait which some define as the display of perseverance, quick-wittedness, prowess, valor, etc.

The topic, intervention of the gods, is seen throughout the book numerous times as the gods who are in favor of Odysseus lend a helping hand. It is well-known that the gods are very important to the Greeks. In this epic poem, The Odyssey, Homer demonstrates the importance of the positive and encouraging intervention of the gods in Greek culture; the brave actions, encouraging words, and cunning strategies of Athena as she assists and guides Odysseus on his journey back home.
Ghost figures in literature are usually metaphors for the past. In some cases their presence is not meant to haunt or terrify, but rather remind living characters of certain events or feelings, thus creating a link between the living and the dead. This link can provide insight for the living character. In both Homer’s, Odyssey and Vergil’s, Aeneid, the main characters are confronted by the ghost of people from their past. It is in these appearances were both, Odysseus and Aeneas, hear from their deceased loved ones and their contrasting views toward death.
As previously stated in “Power and Control,” humanity is defined by our never-ending quest for power and control over plants, animals, and environments as well as other human beings and the human form. Our ability to force others to do what we want or not allow them to do what we do not want drives us. Thus, on the opposite side of the coin, inhumanity must be defined by vulnerability, signifying powerlessness or lack of control. While not a stereotypically monstrous quality, vulnerability is something that we as human beings strive to distance ourselves from at all costs. The more power we have, the less vulnerable we are.
In the epic poem, the Iliad written by Homer, several characters taking part in the warfare between the Achaeans and the Trojans are portrayed as embodying the heroic code of courage, physical strength, leadership, arete of value of honour, and the acceptance of fate. The heroic code is illustrated by the actions of the Trojan prince, Hector and the Achaeans strongest warrior, Achilles. Both of these characters display the Greek’s image of a hero, and can also let the reader discern what the society admires, looks up to and aspires to in its heroes. There are also characters who fail to be heroic, such as the Trojan “vivid and beautiful” prince, Paris. These characters in the Iliad illustrate the qualities that Ancient Greek society values.

Heroes in Ancient Greece were exalted and looked at as eminent individuals within their own society. Heroes in modern society often appear supernatural or extremely skilled like Superman or Batman, but for the Greeks heroicness was often displayed through mundane deeds like fighting in war or having rational, common sense that affected the way certain these heroes completed certain tasks. The term “hero” for the Greeks was a appellation only bestowed upon those who protected and fought for others through selfless acts. Resulting in those men being truly influential within their culture and society abroad.
