I started taking honors type classes in third grade, when my elementary school had an optional class for gifted students to assist in developing our problem solving and literature skills. From fourth through seventh grade I was homeschooled. The curriculum I was using was more advanced and more involved personally than what I'd experienced in my regular elementary school classes. It wasn't simply a classroom where I was handed a packet of work and the teacher walked away. I was allowed to talk through my work and analyze my ideas deeper, instead of simply doing questions by rote, which helped greatly in learning more complicated subjects instead of only memorizing them. As I entered back into public school in the 8th grade, I was immediately placed in honors classes, which continued the more in-depth aspect of my lessons. Concepts were analyzed and I was encouraged to ask questions, …show more content…
I was never simply given a worksheet. Instead, I was told to share my ideas on a subject with a group to form collective opinions as opposed to being fed a lesson word-by-word from a book. This further inspection of my lessons allowed me to genuinely retain information I was taught, making sure I truly learned instead of repeating back information mechanically. All of my advanced classes I was involved in abetted my love of learning, which is why I'm also looking forward to honors classes in college. They will allow me to learn in a way that has proven to be more effective for me. Also, I have found that honors teachers tend to be far more involved with their students than what is considered usual, which engages me far more in a classroom. Assistance and personal attention from teachers allows me to grow in my knowledge, in addition to making the class feel more involved and useful. Contrary to this, regular classrooms feel a lot more cold and impersonal, which has never been a suitable environment for
When I was attending Kaneland John Shields Elementary School in Sugar Grove, everday was just the same. First we started out with Silent reading our books, and then moved onto reading with our guided reading books. Next, we would move onto writing, where some days we free wrote and others we had an assignment. After Writing we had specials, which consisted of, art, P.E, computer, and music. Then we had lunch, math, and lastly social studies and science.
In those days we didn’t have online education. So I kept trying when I got settled in at the new place, but somehow something would always distract me, or I would lose interest. My experience as a student in elementary school was uneventful, except for the fact that I was a left handed child in a catholic school and in those days, (early sixties), it was not exactly an acceptable behavior, but eventually they did. Secondary and
I grew up in a middle-class, small town neighborhood right next to the coast in south Texas. At the age of fourteen, I moved to the Texas Hill Country. Before this time, I had been homeschooled since the third grade. I learned early how to think on my own and to think on a deeper level. I was able to take astronomy, robotics and things that helped develop my science skills which was an opportunity for to explore many avenues that I would have been unable to do in a public school setting.
Mr. Millar, a Spanish teacher at my high school and the advisor for our chapter of the National Honor Society, was a man whom I grew to respect and admire during my first year in NHS. Sure, he was a little eccentric, but his students loved him for his easy going method of teaching and his cross country runners cherished his countless amusing idiosyncrasies; consequently, I was shocked when I stumbled across a particular article on a local news website. “The Michigan State Police notified Howell Public Schools that Duane Millar, a Howell High School teacher and coach was arraigned in the 54B District Court in Ingham County.” My mind raced as I read on, “the charges were on one count of possession of child sexually abusive material... as well as one count of using a computer to commit a crime.” I had known him for almost a year at this point, a year in which I had worked closely with him as an officer in NHS.
I truly felt like my teachers cared and valued my opinion when I interacted with the class and this became just one of the factors that made me follow the decision to become more
The English 1300 class has helped me to improve and develop my writing skills in several ways. Primarily this class has helped to reduce the stresses that I have always felt when a report or essay was asked for. Contributing and being involved in this class will have substantial influence in future English classes and all classes no matter what the subject. I have discovered that my previous classes in High School served only as minimal effort and upon entering college the rules have been amplified and are crucial to a timely completion of your classes and ultimately college. Feedback was critical and valued.
I came into my first college writing class feeling prepared thanks to you and your investment in me as a student in your AP Lang class. I developed as a writer more than I ever had in your class, and it definitely helped me in my college writing class this semester. I already knew how important it was to revise and continuously critically think about my writing, as well as the importance of multiple drafts and peer review. My English 110 class this semester was very similar to yours because we also did multiple drafts where I could revise my paper as many times as needed. The big difference was that the focus was on different genres and how to appeal to those, which was something new compared to my high school English courses.
I had started to prove my teacher wrong. I was doing very well in every subject, particularly in English and writing. I have always loved to read, but writing was (and is) a challenge for me. When I was impressed by a novel, or very interested in a particular topic, my teacher would assign a paper or essay to summarize what I had learned. I also had an interest in history and started reading many books and materials on early American history.
I would recommend this course to someone else as I thought it had a lot of great information. I enjoyed the look at my own paradigms, the way I see life. What I believe about what you think helps sculpt the way I think about it, or “I am what I think you think I am” (Landvatter, 2013, para. 1). This was a huge idea when I was first exposed to it. Hard to understand, and harder to try and relate to others.
During the course of this semester, I feel that I have grown substantially as a writer. I think that I could improve even more with practice as well as using a few resources. This class has helped me drastically by improving my writing structure but I think it could have been even better if I had spent my time more efficiently. Overall this class has been very beneficial to me and I think it will really help me in the future. When I started this class I took a completely different approach to writing a paper.
However, as a teaching assistant, I had to retrieve past recollection of the course material and organize them in a logical, coherent manner for some else. For example, one of my teaching assistant duties involved conducting online test reviews. I now have a greater knowledge of the course material from conducting online test reviews. Before the teaching assistance experience, I had an unreasonable expectation of when I believed a test or a paper grade should be completed.
This module and coursework requirements were directed to present some crucial and effective experience for me. During the entire course, I had learnt a number of different learning, which can be proved quite helpful for me to build a successful and attractive career ahead. I can present the significance of the coursework activities done in terms of my learning from this subject. The reflection of the coursework learning can be presented as below: Problems faced during the research work: Although I have been able to finish my coursework requirements within the time frame.
My journey in this English 3001 course during the past ten weeks, and over the course of taking is English class I have grown and learned more that I thought it is necessary for me to know as a student. I have improved in my overall writing skills because if you look at my second in-class essay and the rest of my essay you will see that I have made progress and improvement compare to my diagnostic essay and the first in-class essay. Moreover, now that I have completed the English course my skills are better that I am capable to meet the university standard writing requirements. This English course additionally taught me how powerful the composed word and language can be. This quarter my ability to compose essays and express my thoughts, ideas,
Also, the environments of schools helped me learn responsibility and were also able to sign up for after school to get help with my homework instead of leaving the entire responsibility to my
In 9th and 10th grade my studying habits were very poor and it showed tremendously on test and quizzes. 11th and 12th grade I took the initiative to learn how to study and not procrastinate. This was a challenge for me because test and quizzes took up the most percentage over classwork and homework which means one test or one quiz could drop your grade
