Medical Care and Hospitals During the Civil War The Civil War started on April 12, 1861 and ended April 9, 1863. Many soldiers died for many different reasons. About 750,000 soldiers died during the Civil War because of medical causes. Most deaths were caused by diseases from bullet wounds and other injuries. Two thirds of 620,000 soldiers who died were not because of enemy fire but instead because of disease. Many of the diseases that the soldiers got came from bullet wounds and infections from all different kinds of wounds. During the war a common disease was smallpox. Although it was a bloody war, disease was the number one cause of death due to all the unsanitary equipment being used. Not only did the cleanness of things factor in the deaths caused by disease, but so did the knowledge of the people back then.
