1. The Spanish American War which took place in 1898 - The Spanish American War portrayed America's rise and decline of the European powers. The war also led to America gaining territories and colonies in the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean (the Philippines, Cuba, Puerto Rico, The Marianas and a host of other territories). The possession of the Philippines in particular led to permanent American involvement in Asian affairs.
2. The Building of the Panama Canal taking place in 1903 - The building and completion of the Panama Canal has a multitude of important foreign policy implications. First it led to the United States' backing up secessionist factions, who split the republic of Panama from Colombia, and it also led to the granting of sovereign land rights to the United States over the Panama Canal Zone. Modernism:

Newtonian Physics is kicked out by findings of Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, and Max Planck which established a new relative universe model wherein everything wasn't so structured like in Newton's "world machine."
This led to a new notion in society which was taken to extreme measures by the nihilist Friedrich Nietzsche. He believed that life had no meaning as God didn't exist and furthermore Christianity limited the accomplishments of society. Many people were starting to feel similarly--they were uncertain about their existence and purpose. These sentiments led to various artistic, literary, and musical movements, (very creatively) known as modernism. Due to the new lack of existential certainty, modernism is regarded as more pessimistic than realism.
