When Abraham Lincoln became President there was a fear from the southerners that the southern way of life would end. The southerners thought that if the western territories became free states that the Republicans would change the Constitution and make slavery in all areas outlawed and many thought that they would leave the Union before this inflicted upon them. The southerners held back from the division until 1860 when Lincoln became President. In history it is known that South Carolina was the first state that began the secession. “On December 20, 1860, a state convention repealed South Carolina’s ratification of the U.S. Constitution and voted to withdraw from the Union. It did not want to be part of a nation in which it had no control.” (Schultz, n.d.). On February 07, 1861, several other states including Mississippi, Florida, …show more content…
(Schultz, n.d.). The Confederate States of America were the first to willing withdraw from the Union as they tended to have more slaveholding families and the Northern territories were the last to withdraw from the Union as they tended to have fewer slaves. In order to prevent this from becoming a war John Crittenden and Abraham Lincoln tried to come up with several ways to compromise with the situation at hand. The first attempt was by John Crittenden with the Crittenden Compromise which was unsuccessful. This compromise was a “reconciliation proposal advocating that the Missouri Compromise line of 1820 be extended all the way to the Pacific, excluding California, with all the land north of the line free; all the land south of it open to slavery; also included an “unamendable amendment” to the Constitution, guaranteeing the preservation of slavery in the southern states where it already existed.” (Schultz, n.d.). Lincoln then began to reach out to the southerners to reassure them that he would not cause problems in states where slavery already existed and that if they did not withdraw from the Union they could remain
Joseph Montesino Abraham Lincoln won the presidential election on November 6, 1860 without the support of a single southern state. Abraham Lincoln proposes banning slavery in all the American territories to stop it spreading. The Crittenden Compromise was proposed as a constitutional amendment by Kentucky Senator John J. Crittenden on December 18th, 1860 to assured the continuation of slavery in states where it already existed, in hope of preventing the First State to secede from the Union. Two days before Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration, the Crittenden Compromise failed and was rejected.
After the thirty-four years, the slavery debate became a problem yet again. Therefore, the Missouri Compromise essentially shoved the slavery conflict out of view. Overall, I believe that the compromise resulted in the neither the North nor the
Political parties were splitting along North and South lines and even violence was becoming an issue in congress itself. Before the election of 1860, Southerners had already agreed that if a republican wins the election, they would leave the Union. As it came to be, Lincoln, a republican, was elected and the south truly did leave the Union. During the four months, before President Lincoln's inauguration, President James Buchanan did nothing to stop the secession. It may be even concluded that he was sympathetic to the Southern cause.
In the months following the election of Abraham Lincoln as President of the United States, seven southern states seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. This was done primarily as a response to Lincoln’s election, as Lincoln did not support the institution of slavery, a crucial aspect of Southern society. Secession from the United States meant that these states would form a separate country from the United States with its own government and military. Some have speculated that secession was failure in democracy, that democracy should have prevented such a large part of the United States to be so unhappy with its government that it would form a new country. However, it was the American system of democracy that laid
American history noted that the secession of the southern states was a reason for the Civil War. The Civil War had many men to die during the cause, less men died in the world war comparing them to the Civil War. Slavery was a cause for the southern states to secede and it could be considered as one of the major factors. Along with state sovereignty, economic, and political difference are amongst the list that caused the south to secede. Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina were the southern states that seceded and form a southern Confederacy.
According to Document E and F, John C. Calhoun, of the South, thinks that states have the right to secede from the union if they're unhappy. While Abraham Lincoln think our union is perpetual and will last forever. The states do not have the right to secede if they're unhappy because the union never ends and never changes, says Lincoln. This caused South Carolina to secede, then followed by South
The concept of slavery being taken away as a right led to the Southern states seceding, becoming a “country” of their own. They felt the North was not listening to them, and ignoring their rights clearly listed as an amendment. This amendment was included to gain the Southern states ratification of the constitution which ultimately led to the Civil War. The state having this type of power caused the Federalists to feel a bill of rights was redundant, but Anti-Federalists did not feel that it was written clear enough. They were not reassured.
‘Slavery was the root cause of secession’. ‘November 6 1860, Lincoln was elected president of America which resulted in panic emerging in the South’ . The election of Lincoln as president who was a Republican leader meant that ideologies, movements and values from the North would be implemented in the South which meant the abolition of slavery. Slavery was a huge characteristic of the South as the economy; politics; social status and psychological mind-sets were influenced by the process of slavery. The southern white population then derived the idea of secession which meant the South would gain independence from Northern aggression .
During this time, the U.S. was split into two sections, the majority of the southern states had seceded from the United States, banding together as their own country known as the Confederate States of America who were fighting the war to keep slavery legal. The northern states maintaining their commitment to the United States were fighting the war to end slavery. The Transcontinental Railroad was going to open up the territories west of the the Missouri River and allow the creation of more free states. Fearing the loss of influence of slave states, the congressional representatives of the south opposed the railroad on financial grounds.
First, Southern States seceded from the Union because wanted
After the election of President Abraham Lincoln in 1860, eleven Southern states seceded from the Union. People in the South made a living through a plantation economy, Southerners needed cash crops that were labor intensive, using slaves to work this economy. The Northern economy was very different than the Southern economy the Northern economy was an industrialized economy, unlike the Southern economy. Abolitionists wanted slavery to end and thought it was an immoral and incorrect way to treat other human beings. Many Southerners supported the secession of South Carolina, and many other states, from the Union because they would rather leave the Union now than be killed by the people who hated them and the people they owned.
People in the south thought once Lincoln was elected, he would immediately abolish slavery. They threatened to leave the U.S., and they did. South Carolina was the first to
The Southern states were immensely opposed to having an whig, abolitionist president, Lincoln, that they warned of secession if he won the election. Senator Daniel Webster notes in his speech to Senate, “Secession! Peaceable Secession! Sir, your eyes and mine are never destined to see that miracle” (doc D). The South was insistent on signing no more compromises to further unionize them to the United States.
After Lincoln won the election, it had shocked the South, making them angry. After this, the first southern state seceded from the Union: South Carolina. Six other states then seceded out of the Union, following South Carolina: Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Georgia, and Louisiana. When giving his inaugural address, Lincoln stated that he was no threat to the seceded states and that he
The Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850 were attempts to bring the nation together but ended up pulling it apart. The Missouri Compromise's goal was to end the feud on the border for free and slave states, end the feud on Missouri becoming a free or slave state. The solution for the border was to have an imaginary line at 36 degrees, 30' minutes anything above the line, with an acception of Missouri, would be free and anything below the line would be slave. The solution to Missouri becoming free or slave was Maine would become a free state and Missouri would become a slave state to keep the number of slave states and the number of free states equal. In time the Missouri Compromise would tear the nation apart despite its intentions.
