There is one specific Presidential election that, in my mind, had the most significant impact on the United States. This is the Election of 1860. The main topic during this election was slavery. It was up to the people of the United States to decide the fate of their country. Similar to how the country was split at the time, both candidates held two opposing viewpoints on the issue. Race played a large role in the election. The election of 1860 is often regarded as one of the three most critical elections in the history of the United States (Levy). Out of all of the fifty-eight presidential elections, the Election of 1860 had one of the most impactful outcomes on United States history. Before the Election of 1860, many events took place that would impact the election. One of these events was the Dred Scott case. The Dred Scott case was a Supreme Court case in which a slave travelled with his owner from a slave state to a free state. While in the free state, Scott married another slave. His owner whom he had travelled there with allowed Scott to be free. When his owner died, Scott attempted to sue his wife because she rented Scott out as a slave again, despite being free when he travelled to the non-slave state. Free blacks in America weren’t able to sue the court. The concept of popular sovereignty was also questioned, and blacks with ancestors were imported to America was slave could no longer become citizens. The Case ruled that slaves in free countries are still slaves.

Dred Scott was a black slave that traveled to the Illinois and Wisconsin Territories with Dr. Emerson, his master. While Dred Scott was located in the free territory, he was considered a free man. Eventually, both Scott and Emerson moved to Saint Louis, Missouri, a slave state, which meant Scott would no longer be considered free. When they arrived in Missouri, Dr. Emerson died leaving Dred Scott in the hands of Emerson’s wife. Dred Scott sued Mrs. Emerson in 1846, to defend his claim that he was no longer a slave.

The decision was not the first to be made regarding Dred Scott; a Missouri jury ruled in Scott 's favour when Scott claimed that his residence in Illinois and Wisconsin made him free, but the state supreme court ruled against him, which lead to the case being escalated to the US Supreme Court. American voters became more influential in presidential elections because of the events that took place during the Jacksonian and Progressive Eras. In the Jacksonian Era, some voting restrictions were removed, voting became more private, the public was more informed about politics, and voters were taken into greater consideration by presidential candidates. In the Progressive Era, better living conditions, the fight against corruption, and other political reforms made it easier for the working class to vote for candidates that they favored. These events gave voters a greater influence in politics and made elections more fair. During the Jacksonian Era, states began to give citizens a larger influence over presidential elections.
The Lincoln-Douglas debates in 1858, also known as The Great Debates of 1858, were seven different political debates. These debates were between the Republican candidate, Abraham Lincoln and the Democratic Party candidate, Stephen A. Douglas. During this period of time, United States senators were elected by the state legislatures. Due to the fact the state legislatures elect the United States senator, both Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas are fighting for themselves to prove to the Illinois legislatures that they deserve the spot. Each and every one of the different seven debates dealt with both of these men in a campaign for one of Illinois' two United States Senate seats.
When talking about the election of 1896, there are many changes that occurred that have had a long term-effect on the nation as a whole. Even though almost a hundred years separated these elections and addresses, the country was divided and faced unrest during these periods. During Lincoln’s presidencies, the citizens had oppossing views over slavery during the Civil War. During the time of JFK’s inaugural speech, the country was divided because the Election of 1960 was one of the closest elections in history.
