The Church was one of the most important organizations that helped unify the people of the Roman Empire. The Church had changed immensely because of the different views people had on religion. In Medieval Europe, people practiced Catholicism and were part of the Roman Catholic Church. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Catholicism had strengthened. The Pope had much power during the Middle Ages and would often crown the various kings and queens throughout the kingdoms. Latin was the official language of the Catholic Church. In the Byzantine Empire, people practiced a different sect of Christianity. In 1054 CCE, an event called the Great Schism had occurred which split the Eastern Orthodox Church from the Roman Catholic Church. A patriarch …show more content…
In Medieval Europe, they used a system called manorialism. This is where a lord would provide serfs with housing, farmland, and protection from bandits. In return, the serfs would have to tend the lord’s lands, care for his animals, and other jobs to maintain the estate. A manor was a lord’s estate in Medieval Europe which would be given to serfs who were peasants. These serfs were not permitted to leave the land they were in. One of the most substantial reasons as to why Eastern Europe prospered was due to trade. The Byzantine Empire was the center for trade across the continents. The location of the Byzantine Empire allowed its success with trade since it was located between the Silk Road, North Africa, the Indian Ocean, and the Mediterranean Sea. The capital of the Byzantine Empire, Constantinople, was a major economic trade center. The Byzantine Empire had more freedom compared to those who lived in Medieval Europe. People had used trade as a source of economic wealth, however in Medieval Europe wealth was often limited to certain people of power because of the feudal system. The serfs stayed at the bottom while the nobles and monarchs stayed at the top. Kings ruled the entire land and divided their lands to lords which employed many peasants to produce crops and other goods. Knights and the Code of Chivalry arose in this time period as lords needed people to protect their lands. In return for their services, knights received their own
Soon after this they switched to greek as the official language and supporting greek studies. The downfall of the byzantine empire is solely because of the involvement in the Crusades, also known as the holy war. This holy war was against the Turks mounted in central Asia, however, the Pope had started the Crusade even though politically they should have not created them. The first crusade was a mild success with Alexios asking Pope Urban II for help to expand eastward to stifle the muslim rule. Of course Urban had seen this as a two birds with one stone kind of deal by knocking out
They also developed new ideas the topic in caesaopapism which lead having a better relationship between the church and the states. Leading to Caesaopapism joining the church and the state. This was different because the Catholic church had a separation of the church and the state. Although this is not the only thing differed from the Roman Catholicism. The Eastern Orthodox differed from the roman empire in the terms of Language the roman Catholicism used Latin were the Orthodox church used a different language being Greek.
After the Roman Empire inevitably fell, trade fell along with it. Manors grew more popular as they produced everything anybody needed - they were self-sufficient. Not only this, but the populations of towns and cities shrunk. Everybody was involved in these new self-sufficient manors and the manorial system. But due to the Crusades, trade was revived.
The Middle Ages were a time where kings and nobles owned the land and serfs worked with little pay. Serfs were like slaves that worked on a farm (Doc. 1). They got one day to farm for themselves and the other six they were working for their king or noble (OI). Nobles and kings had knights called vassals (OI). Vassals were knights who protected and served kings and nobles in exchange for land (OI).
In 1054, the Great Schism had taken place. After many disagreements involving the nature of the Trinity, the relative importance of the faith and reason, and especially the use of Icons, the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic church had broken their communion. Although the churches based off Christianity and monotheism, the amount of control and association the church had over everything had varied. Roman Catholic churches in Western Europe no longer had any stable control or involvement in politics, as the region became decentralized and had instead became dependent on religion as more of a form of organization during the Middle Ages. Whilst the West had become decentralized, the Byzantine Empire had started to become even more successful in control over the association of government and
Underneath the nobles and barons, there are knights that are trained from the age of 7. In return for service to the nobles and barons, they are given grants of land. The peasants and serfs are on the bottom of the social system, there are peasants who farm the land in return for shelter and protection (history.com). This compares with
The Byzantine Empire was located inside of Rome, but on the East side. Even though it was declared as its own empire, it really was not because again it was still part of the Roman empire. The only reason why the Roman Empire was divided into two, was because it was too big go for one emperor to dictate all of the empire so that is why they had split it into two. The two empires were called the Western Empire and the Eastern Empire, which was later switched to the Byzantine Empire.
Byzantine DBQ Essay Many people think of "devious" or "sneaky" when they hear the word Byzantine. Therefore, most tend to think it is not important to study the Byzantines. The Byzantines actually had a great impact on our lives today from the law system that we have in place to the architecture. There is more behind this loaded word than what meets the eye. The purpose of this essay is to explain why it is imperative to study the Byzantines.
The Byzantine Empire moved its capital from Rome to Constantinople, changed the official religion to Christianity, and changed the official tongue from Latin to Greek.
Between 600 and 1450, religion in Europe changed in that a schism occurred and Russia converted to Christianity. However, there was a near nonstop conflict between the popes and political leaders throughout this time. A major change that occurred between 600 and 1450 was Russia’s conversion to Orthodox Christianity. In 980, Vladimir I, a ruler of Novgorod who had fallen from power, returned from exile to Kiev with a band of Varangians and made himself the grand prince of Kievan Russia.
The feudalism was a social system ruled by multiple kings then eventually fell. The feudal system is where a monarch makes usually all the decisions about his piece of land. The lords controlled just part of his land. The knights would prevent enemies from attacking the king's land. The peasants/serfs would work on the fields at the manors.
Cultural differences also played a role. For instance, in the Eastern Orthodox Church, Greek became the language of religious practice instead of the Latin used in the Roman Catholic Church. Moreover, more so than in the West, Byzantine thinkers sought to formulate Christian doctrine in terms of Greek philosophical concepts. The Eastern Orthodox faith expanded into Eastern Europe when the Byzantine Empire was at its height, but it was driven from other regions, particularly in North Africa and the Near East, by the expansion of Islam. After 1000, the Roman Catholic tradition became the more expansive of the two expressions, as its influence spread into Islamic Spain, non-Christian northern Europe, and Orthodox Eastern
Between 200 and 1200 the Mauryan and Byzantine empires both had political leaders and noble classes that expanded empires and spread their religions. The Mauryans developed an elaborate bureaucracy that collected taxes from farming and had networks of people to spy on its own people and enforce obedience. Unlike the Mauryans, the Byzantines created a system of feudalism and used Eastern Orthodoxy to legitimize the rulership of an emperor. A large imperial army consisting of war elephants and cavalry secured power for the Mauryans, while military effectiveness led to the rise of the Carolingian empire and Vikings helped with spread of trade.
Another significant similarity in the spread and development of these beliefs is that both faiths would experience a split that would change history forever. In 1054, a combination of political tension, theological differences, and leadership disputes between Rome and Constantinople caused what become known as the “Great Schism”. The Great Schism created two separate churches, the Roman Catholic Church, and the Eastern Orthodox Church. These two churches remained under a state of excommunication from 1054 until 1965 when the leaders of the two churches finally agreed to meet and resume dialogue after
“The Great Schism” The Great Schism also referred to as The East-West Schism, divided "Chalcedonian" Christianity into Western Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy in 1054. The East-West Schism was the result of an extended period of separation between the two bodies of churches. It was the historic sundering of Eucharistic relations between the see of Rome – now the Roman Catholic Church, and the sees of Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem – now the Orthodox Church. It divided medieval Mediterranean Christendom into Eastern and Western branches, which later became known as the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church, respectively.
