Mental disorders are a common occurrence that afflicts many people. In the play “Othello” the character Iago shows signs of a mental disorder that is also exhibited in many people today. One of the worst has to be Schizophrenia due to the effect it has on everyday people. Shakespeare shows Schizophrenia through his character Iago. Shakespeare shows through his character Iago the problems that go with the disorder known as Schizophrenia. Iago on several occasions shows signs that he could be suffering from this disorder. The paranoia and unwavering suspicion Iago has around the notion that Othello has bedded his wife are signs of Schizophrenia. The disorder causes people to believe that someone is after them or doing things to hurt them with no regard. An example of this is a man who believes that the world is out to get him. He will almost always show signs of the disorder through his actions. He will be suspicious of everyone and even have rage or anger towards others because of his fear that everyone is out to get him and hurt him. He achieves this by telling Othello that his wife is cheating on him and even placing a handkerchief of Othello's wife in Cassio's room which will lead Othello to believe his wife is cheating on him. Iago's actions surrounding the handkerchief display his paranoia and are a means to protect himself from Othello. People with Schizophrenia often use protective mechanisms and in doing so will hurt others to protect themselves. An example of this is a person who will lie and cheat to make sure that someone they fear will hurt them, loses everything and has no strength left to retaliate. In William Shakespeare’s play, The Tragedy of Macbeth, the character of Macbeth is easily influenced by his wife and starts to spiral in his attempt to gain ambition. This is evident as he begins to behave in unexpected ways, seeing things, and negative thinking. This actively demonstrates that he is easily capable of changing drastically throughout this play by going through traumatic situations including his wife that calls him a coward if wasn’t be able to do so. In judgment of his character he would be diagnosed with schizophrenia for multipipe reasons. Yet, Iago has not become this iconic villain without just (used loosely) cause. Before Iago’s notorious connotation, this dauntless soldier-people considering the precedent for just acts, and pious intentions- is discounted for a promotion by word of Othello, leading the inexorable “green-eyed monster” to peek its grotesque head out from underneath its lair. Throughout the course of the novel, Shakespeare frequently equivocates on the nature of one character’s actions and motivations: Iago. To the other characters in the novel, Iago is presented as the steady adhesive holding his fellow Venetian’s together through periods of crisis; however to the reader, Iago is known as a conniving and covetous individual who is ready and pry and steal what he wants through mistrust and deception. These mirages serve not only to fortify Iago’s ever-growing power, but also to cement him as a devious villain. Through the character of Iago, Shakespeare is able to manufacture a false reputation of honesty and trustworthiness towards Othello, conveying that villainy often arises from jealousy and revenge.

As stated before, the tone that Iago expresses repeatedly throughout Shakespeare’s Othello is malicious revenge. However, aside from his hatred, there is a slight emotion of obsession that he expresses in his soliloquy. For instance, Iago is persistent on ruining Othello’s life every hour of every day, so that he would feel the pain that Iago feels.
