The society in Fahrenheit 451 was ruined. Everyone thinks everything is going just fine when in reality it is not. Montag was one of the only people that realize the wrong in society and tried to fix it. In order to convince Mrs. Boyle that society needed to change montag uses logos by brings up facts and reasons why the society is bad and pathos by bringing up sad moments in her life. Montag uses logos and has facts that back up his opinion on why he thinks that the society has gone bad. Montag tells Mrs. Bowles, “Go home and think of your first husband divorced and your second husband killed in a jet and your third husband blowing his brains out. Go home and think of the dozen abortions you have had.” (101) This is a reminder of how stressful her life is and why they need to change. Montag tells Mrs. Bowles, “Your children hate your guts... Go home and think how it all happened and what did you ever do to stop it?”(101) Montag is trying to get Mrs. Bowles to change her mind using emotions like sadness and regret. Sadness is used when he reminds her that her children hate her. This is sad because usually your children love you and if they do not it is a sign of a troubled family. Another emotion from pathos is regret. There is regret because Montag wants Mrs. Bowles to think about what she could have done or regret what she did to get to the point she is at. I think that Montag’s use of pathos and logos in the quote was excellent. Even though the result of the conversation was sad Montag made a strong point and stood for it. I believe that Mrs. Bowles did take what Montag said under consideration but didn’t put it into effect on her life. Montag knows the wrong in society and is one of the activist trying to change it.
