In The Odyssey, by Homer, Odysseus traveled far and wide in search of his way home. He wanted to go home back to his wife, Penelope, and his son, Telemachus. In total, Odysseus spends almost twenty years trying to find his way home back to his family and his throne. He has gone through many misfortunes and he almost runs out of time to keep his wife. If he did not make it back and prove to everyone that he is truly Odysseus, his wife might have married another man. Moving from one location to another changed Odysseus in various ways; he learns new things and sees thing in different perspectives, which is the reason that the movement from one place to another plays such an important role in this play.
In the city of Troy, the Trojan war which lasted ten years, was the first location Odysseus had arrived at. When they had won using the Trojan horse method, it was time for him to go back home. His journey on the way home, had been delayed. Odysseus and his men leave Troy and arrive at the Land of the Lotus Eaters, there the men are convinced to eat the Lotus plant. He does not only change mentally, but he also changes physically and emotionally. In the beginning of the play, Odysseus is a very brave and prideful man, but as the numerous events occur he changes. He is an impulsive man because he thinks that he doesn’t need the gods, and he is very prideful because he boasts on his achievement, and he also does not think about what he says because he is reckless. While being stuck on Calypso’s island, Odysseus has seven entire years to think about the many things that he could have or has done.
