The water supply has a big effect on the Everglades whether it’s good or bad. The water in it is used by animals and 7 million people in Florida. There is a lot of history about the Everglades and its water. Many changes has happened to the Everglades over the years. The water has been polluted by sugarcane factories and many people want to restore it. If the water is polluted even more that can create a big problem. Without the Everglades water supply, the Everglades won’t ever be the same.
Many people that lived in the everglades wanted to get rid of the water. They considered it useless swamps. In 1905-1910 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers decided to use the Everglade’s water to supply water to cities. They thought at first this was a great idea until they realized the Everglades was nearly entirely drained. “Some people tried to defend and preserve the Everglades. In 1934, Congress designated the Everglades as a National park and in 1974 the park officially opened.” –Past and Present: The Florida everglades by Tobey Haskell. Although making the Everglades a National Park helped, there are still some problems like the sugarcane factories.

“The Everglades is host to 440,000 acres of sugar cane. As the demand for the sugarcane increases, more land is needed for planting, which means less land is available to support life” –Can we Fix the Water Supply? By Caleb Hughes. That’s not the only problem. Sugarcane factories also pollute the Everglades’ water. The fertilizer used for the sugarcane releases chemicals such as nitrogen and phosphorus into the water of the everglades. These chemicals contaminate and lessen the water supply in the Everglades. Many people want to help replenish the water supply in the
The Indian River Lagoon is a beauty to Florida, and a natural landscape, but, it is at risk from pollution. Chemicals, algae blooms, and harmful things that humans do to pollute it, it also puts the animals living in the lagoon at risk of dying, and becoming endangered. The causes of the Indian River Lagoon take effect greatly. Freshwater is also very important, it is a vital life source. There are harmful chemicals from pesticides, fertilizers, impacts this problem a lot.
The Burmese python are a beautiful reptilian creature, with camo pattern skin. They are originally from Southeastern Asia and have invaded the everglades in florida. You ask yourself how did a creature from Asia come all the way to florida? Well pet stores have been selling Burmese pythons and have made it out, and are harming the everglades. First of all the everglades are found in florida and are an area marshy tract of land that is mostly under water and covered with tall grass, Burmese pythons have made their way into the everglades.
The Burmese python has caused a decrease in the local animal population. The Burmese python has also caused a change in the little ecosystem the Everglades has. The view of people about the Everglades has also changed. To begin with, the Burmese infestation has caused a decline in the animal population in the Everglades. According to the article, “Florida Python

The presence of the Burmese python is change of the everglades by eating other animals.
Everglades National Park is one of the largest and most-well known national parks in the United States. This national park is special in that it was not preserved for its wonders, but because of the conservation and protection of its fragile ecosystem. Everglades National Park currently covers 1,509,000 acres of land (stretching through Dade, Collier and Monroe county), making it the third largest national park in the contiguous 48 states smaller than Death Valley National Park and Yellowstone National Park. The Everglades is located on the southern section of the Florida Peninsula.
There was so much damage in the Everglades, the Water Management District had to pay $50 million to $100 million (“Florida Wildlife Hurt by Progress”). Without a doubt, this was a huge problem to the Everglades and the Water Management District, having to pay a lot of money. Marjory Stoneman Douglas said “Their idea was to get the water off the land. They never thought they would need that water” (“Floridians Finally Heed Old Warning on Water”). This phase was a big struggle to everyone who was trying to protect the Everglades.
“...50% of the original wetlands of South Florida no longer exist today.” The Everglades has a big effect with the water supply. The Everglades has been having many issues with the water supply. Containing, the history of the Everglades, the problems with the water supply today, and the issues on the recent attempts to improve the water supply in the Everglades National Park. There must be a way to fix all these problems.
Other problems arise like snake infestations. When any animal becomes overpopulated in any one area the whole food chain becomes unbalanced in that area. And when animals like snakes become overpopulated the animals they prey on start to die out. Causing any other predators that may prey on the same animal to eventually die out also. As the text suggests in the passage “Are the Everglades Forever?”.
The first white settlers that came to Florida thought it was a good idea to drain the Everglades, but they were wrong. Since those early settlers drained the Everglades we have altered the water system. On page 113 paragraph 3 it says “ The streams were dredged, and the Everglades were nearly drained entirely.” Thanks to those settlers we many never get the Everglades back to the way it used to
Florida has a lot to boast for with it’s beautiful beaches and vibrant wildlife that attracts many tourists from around the world. This attraction to Florida, however, is being plagued by the overwhelming amount of pollution that Florida is facing. This pollution can range from the simplest form of a trash littered beach that almost any resident of Florida can attest to or it can take the form of something much greater. This greater form of pollution is the massive outbreak of green algae that has occurred in Florida with one of the most recent back in July of this year. The algae outbreak is caused by “fertilizer sewage and manure pollution that the state has failed to properly regulate” as stated by Earthjustice spokeswoman Alisa Coe.

but this can cause a turnover in the Everglades. Some examples would be changes in the local animal, changes in people, and changes in the ecosystem. These are some serious flaw happening in the Everglades. To begin, massive species snakes such as the Burmese pythons can be very unhealthy to animals that are the pythons predator. Burmese pythons are out in the wild killing creatures such as alligators, deers, cats, dogs, birds, and rabbits.
The narrator said, “This nation has a large and powerful adversary. Our opponent could cause the United States to lose nearly all her seaborne commerce, to lose her standing as first among trading nations…. We are fighting Mother Nature…. Its’s a battle we have to fight day by day, year by year; the health of our economy depends on victory.” Coming in from the northwest, from Texas via Shreveport, the Red River had been a tributary of the Mississippi for a couple of thousands of years, until the Atchafalaya captured it and drew it away in the 1940’s.
Burmese Pythons Burmese pythons have a large number of sharp, strong, curved teeth. They have long bodies that can strangle their prey. Burmese pythons have invaded Florida’s Everglades. These snakes are very vicious, and they have no known predators. These pythons will tear their way through the Everglades.
Intro: Water pollution has caused so many problems to our waterways that no one really knows how to help. Water pollution caused; dead zones, oil spills, garbage floating around, and unsafe drinking water. People disagree about water pollution because, people have found ways to improve and help out the problem that water pollution has caused around the world. Others believe that that water pollution has created situations and are in the process of figuring out solutions. Marine life habitats are getting destroyed, marine life is declining everyday, how and where the garbage is getting into the oceans, and the drinking water is becoming seriously unsafe to drink.
