When Scout is confronted by her uncle Jack about a fight between Herself and her classmate, Scout responds “-tell you one thing right now, Uncle Jack, I’ll be-- I swear before God if I’ll sit there and let him say something about Atticus.” (114) This quote explains how she had to protect her father, and she could not just stand around and let him say malicious things about Atticus. Those actions were very brave of Scout, but she did not stop there.

Tom Robinson may not be seen as a mockingbird to most, but he is the greatest example of what it means to be a mockingbird. Tom Robinson, a Negro, was accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. This accusation is false, but no one in the town of Maycomb sees him as innocent, only because he is a colored man. He was only hated by the town because he was of color, and for this he was wrongly convicted. He may not have raped Mayella, but he did help her in any way he could and never received payment for helping her, he just did it out of the kindness of his heart.
Atticus has a strong case in court because Mayella had bruises on her left cheek and Bob Ewell was left handed whereasalthough Tom Robinson is right-handed a righty. Tom is like a mockingbird because he is innocent. Atticus uses the analogy of the mockingbird to convey to Scout (and to the reader) that the innocent need to be protected. Furthermore he defends a black man in court. At the time (and maybe still even now) Maycomb, Alabama, is from our perspective a really racist county, and in this culture it takes a lot of courage to go against the tide and not to judge a black man merely of his skin colour or origin, but instead to put his worries before ones own. Most people in Maycomb, who believe black Tom Robinson is innocent, also believe that there is no chance of winning the case and they lack the courage to risk getting a bad reputation with nothing to gain from it. Atticus is probably the only one whose moral views forbid him to look
