Changes on the horizon for the NHTSA vehicle safety rating system
According to the California Highway Patrol, there were 223,128 people injured and 3,104 people killed in motor vehicle accidents across the state in 2013 alone. Such collisions occur despite regulations and technologies aimed at improving traffic and vehicle safety. Recently, however, the U.S. Department of Transportation proposed major changes for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s safety rating system. Barring any significant issues, the changes would go into effect beginning with 2019 model year vehicles.

However, it would also allow vehicles to receive half star increments. The new system will assess vehicles’ use of advanced technologies, including lane departure warning, forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking systems. The hope is that this will push automakers to include these technologies as standard features on their vehicles. Currently, many of these technologies are available, but they are optional features, which may carry additional costs.
New crash tests
In addition to the updates to the rating system, the NHTSA will add tests to better gauge how vehicles fair in accidents. The NHTSA reports that the proposed updates include tests to assess how vehicles protect pedestrians from serious injuries in the event that they are hit.
Additionally, a full frontal barrier test will be added to the crash testing, which will be used to determine the safety of rear seat occupants in auto accidents. A frontal oblique test will also be implemented. This test will measure how vehicles’ occupants are protected during angled front wrecks. The .08 Per Se Law is useful in reducing the number of fatalities and injuries; however, it is definitely not strong enough to eliminate the source of the problem. It is definitely a great starting point. Perhaps implementation of the zero tolerance legislation would be a more efficient means in eliminating the problems. For example some of this options might be the Head-Up Display known as (HUD). Also a night vision camera might be another option you could obtain in you car if offered by the dealer. The HUD is basicly a speedometer with a push of a button you will have the speed digitally in your front windshield. I see the benefit of having it since know you wouldn 't have to remove your eyes from the road and be able to see that speed you 're traveling. However I see a disadvantaged as Carillo pointed out in class.
Teen car wrecks are tragic and happen way too often, vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in America. In 2013 alone more than 2,163 teens, ages 16-19 were killed and 243,243 were treated in hospitals for injuries due to vehicle crashes. That means six teens died every day as a result of motor vehicle crashes. The huge majority (75 percent) of serious teen driver crashes are due to what officials call “critical errors” One of the biggest culprits is the lack of scanning mirrors and other important spots that are a necessity in order to detect and respond to hazards.
I cannot stress enough on how this is so much better for all of us. I mean who doesn’t want to be safe and get to work even faster? After doing some research on National Motorist Association website I discovered that the main problem for these accidents is the differences in speeds. On a 70 mph highway someone driving 70 and another driver driving 60 will increase the chances of an accident all because the driver was going 60. That 10 mph really made the difference.
In 1956, Congress passed a new Federal-Aid Highway Act. Taking about 35 years to build with the estimated cost about $114 billion, thus giving us the outcome of more than 47,000 miles of highway. Now today we have more than ten times that amount. Like then safety was always the government's top priority, but with technology changing more and more everyday we’re not really sure how to safely incorporate into our highway system. The U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao delivered a speech last year talking about some benefits we could gain from new technology, but of course with that also came many challenges we may have to face, but the question on everyone’s mind is, is there a way we could factor in technology safely, and beneficiary for everyone.

The current legal drinking age has reduced the number of fatalities (Jones, Pieper, and Robertson 112). Although this is true, alcohol isn’t the only factor that should be considered. The enforcement of seat belt use is also a major point in the study that often isn’t referred to. Tests have show that the number of automobile-accident deaths have decreased since the mid-1900s; consequently, the MLDA was put into force around the same time. Many argue that the increased drinking age is why these accidents have decreased; however, around the same time the usage of safety belts in cars was emphasized more during this time.
“Every year 500,000 teens are injured in a car wreck. Every year 5,000 teens die in a car wreck meaning an average of 14 teens die a day. Car crashes are the No. 1 killer of teens in the U.S. Even more than alcohol and drug abuse, violence and suicide”. Teens are always excited to earn their license and drive out on the road for the first time, but not every time will be a success, it might also be their last.
Such errors like driving too fast for conditions,lack of scanning that is needed to detect and respond to hazards,and,being distracted by something inside or outside of the vehicle. Cutting out those critical errors could theoretically could decrease the number of teen driving accidents by seventyfive percent. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, speeding is the cause for one out of every three fatal car accidents involving teenage drivers. Automated speed cameras could be the solution to the rapidly growing speeding problem.

Without truckers, few of us would be able to enjoy the access to the wide variety of groceries and consumer goods that we currently take for granted. Truck drivers regularly make a number of sacrifices in order to keep our economy moving. It is not rare for truckers to spend days at a time away from their friends and family. In addition, the nature of their job regularly subjects them to the risk of serious injury.
