On August 29, 2005, a category five hurricane, named Hurricane Katrina struck the city of New Orleans and destroyed everything in its path. As all the other residents of New Orleans, I was one of the people who experienced this horrible disaster. No one ever predicts that this kind of thing will ever happen to them. Everyone has their story about what happened to them during Hurricane Katrina, but I am going to tell you about my experience and how to affected my life.
When Hurricane Katrina came, I was eight years of age and was in the third grade. I was told during school and at home that a hurricane was coming, but I never thought that it was going to be that bad. The day the hurricane came I was still in the city of New Orleans; but the night before, my family went to a bed and breakfast that was located somewhere in the French Quarters. We were in the room that was all the way at the top of the building that had excess to the rooftop to see the overview of the city. As it rained and rained, I never really knew what else was going on throughout the city. All I knew was that water was coming close and my mother told my father that we needed to go now. So once again, we had to pack everything up and wait to see when and how we can leave the city.

I got to experience living in another city and the only thing I hated was the fact that my family was not as close as we used to be before the storm had hit. I know for a fact that I would have never got the opportunity to make the friends that I have now because of it. I know now that is very important to prepare for yourself any kind of disaster. What was Hurricane Katrina? Hurricane Katrina was the largest and 3rd strongest hurricane ever recorded to make landfall in the United States. Katrina first made landfall on August 29, 2005 and struck the Gulf Coast of the United States. Hurricane Katrina was first announced as a Category 3 hurricane and with time it soon grew into a Category 5 hurricane.
In the book A.D New Orleans After The Deluge, By Josh Neufeld is about Hurricane Katrina and how it affected the people of New Orleans. This book was about real people that escaped and lived through the storm. Most people lost everything including their houses, all personal belongings, and jobs. As I was reading the book was shocked that in the beginning most of the characters were not worried about the storm they just wanted to wait it out. No one was expecting such a big storm and thought it would turn east like they normally did.

It was 6:10 in the morning August 28 2005 and New Orleans had just been struck. Homes were being demolished, people were screaming, innocent people were getting killed from the result of the storm surge. . To this day there are 705 people still missing. There are some natural disasters that shake up the world and make people depressed, but Hurricane Katrina was like no other. Even though warnings were given and evacuations were held nearly 2,000 people died because of this hurricane. During the storm winds were as fast as 175 mph with heavy rain all through out. People were stranded and about 8,000 homes were destroyed. People had to wait five days at the superdome full of many New Orleans residents.

In 2012 I survived Hurricane Sandy. Since I just started first grade I was scared, especially when the electricity went out. We didn’t have electricity for 8 days. It was very hard for us because it was the first time going through a situation like this. But we kept on trying.
There was a lot of water in my house and it smelled like fish. After I cleaned my house I fixed all the windows and lived there again. I hope I never see another hurricane! My neighbors did not live through the hurricane because they thought they would be safe in there house. My other neighbors lived because they put boards over there windows and evacuated as soon as they could.

Along with damaging buildings hurricane Andrew also damaged people. The hurricane exposed people to life threatening situations in turn causing them to feel elevated levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. Children exposed to Andrew’s wrath were worse off, experiencing symptoms of PTSD. Studies done a year after the hurricane display that 33% of children were depressed, divorces were up 15%, and domestic violence elevated 21%. When the hurricane hit it knocked out most of the electrical grid along with contaminating most of the water.
The common effects from hurricanes on humans range from death to destruction of homes. However, hurricanes have a psychological toll on humans. Many victims of hurricanes may not start with serious symptoms. Most symptoms in the beginning consist of anxiety, sadness, and difficulty sleeping. Although, over time a human’s condition will deteriorate.
