Many people choose nursing as a profession for the money and the title. I believe that I was called to be a nurse. When I started thinking about what I wanted to be when I grow up in my high school guidance counselor’s office I did not think that I would be a nurse. I thought I was going to be a business woman in fashion going between the United States and France, I excelled in French and the only way I thought I could use it was in business. When I was a junior in high school, I realized that I was not as proficient in French as I thought I was and I did some reflection on what I wanted to be. I knew that I loved to care for people, that dissection and that the human body fascinated me. I also knew that I am a very sensitive and caring …show more content…
Seeing the instant gratification of my patients when I would help them restored my hope that nursing is my calling. However, during this time my hopes and dreams were being dashed, school after school kept turning me down because my grade point average was not good enough. Then one day I got an acceptance letter from Neumann University saying that I was accepted to their nursing program but they did not have space for me and I would have to change my major to early and special education, I called and accepted this major. Within the week I was contacted by Alvernia University telling me that I needed to finish my application and meet with Dr. Symanski. After consulting with both Dr. Symanski and Dr. Greenawald I was accepted on the spot to Alvernia University, and my hope was restored, I could really live out my dreams of being a nurse. Alvernia has provided me with so many opportunities to develop this desire. In each clinical, I was challenged and succeeded. My charisma with my patients as well as my empathy for them came naturally, and countless patients have thanked me for providing them with care and support. I feel that I did not fully realize that nursing was my calling until a few years ago. When my coworkers would ask me what kind of nurse I want to be when I graduate, I would tell them pediatric oncology, every time I said it I would get chills for an unknown reason. Every day when I go to work, school, clinical, or preceptorship, I treat each person that I will be caring for as if they are a blank slate regardless of their history and background. I believe I go into a patient’s room thinking this way because I do not know them as a person, I only know them from what I have been told and what I saw on a computer screen. I believe that everyone should be treated kindly and with respect at all times. I value that nursing is my duty and my ends are not immoral because I am helping someone get better. As a practicing catholic, I find that I often pray for my patients. I feel that care is not only being present for your patient physically but also spiritually. My values in practice helped guide me to work with children because they cannot do wrong and I feel as though I cannot wrong them. I also believe that my values and beliefs influence me to work with those that are very sick to help maximize their time here on earth if they are terminally ill, even if it is just from a brief encounter. I do believe that I will hold many family roles not just as a daughter, but I hope as a mother and wife and I am aware that upholding traditional family roles will be hard while working as a nurse. However, I am confident that the family roles will be able to be bent as they are now in order for my
I feel that being a caregiver I connect with patients almost immediately. Even with the patients other staff see as being difficult my encounter is usually a lot different. The best example I can give is when a patient declines getting his or her vitals done. I can usually go in and assist my coworker or collect vitals by making sure I’m hearing the patients concerns as well as explaining to the patient why we are collecting this information. I feel that my calling is in nursing and this is because I’m not only a caregiver by nature.
In conclusion, not only is compassion, faith, and hope in medicine an important factor when providing care to patients, but it is also important element to life in general. As nurses and health care providers it is our responsibility to provide care with respect and dignity to our patients, as well as to their family. As nurses, we do not always have the time in our assignments that we are given, but it an important factor that we spend quality time with our patients to just listen, as well as provide them with loving
Personal Philosophy of Nursing Personal Philosophy of Person Nursing has not always been my first choice as a career. I started college not knowing what I wanted to be. For the first two semesters of my college life, my major was undecided. I just couldn’t decide which career would be the best option for me.
1) Why did I choose nursing as a profession? When I was younger I was very ill and at that time it was not known whether I would survive. However, I was able to survive and exceed the expectation of the prognosis of the condition.
Every nursing, in order to consider the profession must have an understanding of at least three of the five professional values, in my opinion. These values consist of altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity and social justice (Taylor 96). Beginning with the professional value of Altruism, the believe in or practice and self concern for the well-being of others (96). I believe that in order to be the best nurse you can be for your patients, you must understand the concept of altruism. As a nurse, your profession is to take care of people, if you do not know the professional value of altruism than you cannot possibly understand how important it is to care about the wellbeing of your patient.
I have decided to pursue nursing and apply for the second degree accelerated nursing program; I consider myself a highly motivated individual with a value of strong work ethic. I can certainly distinguish myself as a person with numerous interests, a range of skills and goals. My Goals are to become a highly skilled nurse, work for the united state military and help save lives. Just like my father, I would love to provide a great humanitarian service, not for the pay or the glory or the recognition but to save lives, give hope, provide care, love and touch
The reason why I chose to go to school for Nursing is because of my mother, Charlotte Anthony. My mother is paralyzed from waist down. I have been helping her since I was nine years old. I have helped her bathe, get dressed, and get in and out of the bed. My experience with her has taught me a lot.
Ever since my sophomore year of high school, I knew the medical field was the right choice for me. It wasn’t just the ability to have vast amounts of knowledge about the human body, but to be able to help people. Helping those who need it is a very rewarding idea to me. Although the school I am currently attending is not able to allow me to help people as a nurse. My decision to transfer is based fully on this programs direct entry nursing program.
As a nurse we can make patients feel that we care about them, their health and wellbeing. We can empower them to manage their own health if we can incorporate all of these components into their care. My own personal philosophy will be a constant work of progress as I mature in my field but I will always remember how privileged I am to be able to assist people at their time of need and when they may be at their most

When my mom had surgery I would change the gauze pads and just be so interested in everything that had to do with medicine. I 've always had a passion in helping people, being challenged, and making a difference in people 's lives which I intend to do forever. The next step was figuring
