What is Liberalism? Was it the only factor that brought about the American and Mexican Revolutions? If involved in both revolutions, why were the outcomes so different? What other component determined the result of each war? According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Liberalism is the “belief in the value of social and political change in order to achieve progress.”1 Originating in Europe, it arose during a period known as the Enlightenment, when men had the idea that if something could not be proved by logic or reasoning, it was not to be believed, and that the main aspects of human life were to be mathematical measurement and deduction and scientific experimentation.2 Liberalism was arrived at when people began to “seek for the natural laws that govern and direct human societies.”3 It focuses mainly on individualism and equality for all people. According to liberal beliefs, the foundation of human life comes from the possession of rights in freedom.4 They also believed that the collision of “natural” forces caused governments to arise. As a result of Liberalism, men began to think that freedom was the supreme principle of social life and that the laws that rule and manage human societies were to be natural, not divine. However, it was not only liberalism that brought about the American Revolution. …show more content…
There are three factors to winning a war: 1. The desire to win, 2. A balance of military power, and 3. Strong military tactics.6 Those who fought for Mexican independence lost the war. The Mexican military that fought in the war was weak and unorganized. They lacked the knowledge of military tactics and balance of military power against their enemies. The soldiers were Indians and farmers and did not have good military experience. They were untrained and formed a small army with their leader being Fr. Hidalgo, who was not a trained military man. The Mexican people were also extremely independent and did not follow orders as a group, but rather every man completed his own actions. In contrast, the American Revolution had a different outcome for several reasons. The colonists won the war because they had all three factors to win the war. Their military was organized and strong and was compiled of ex-British soldiers and Englishmen. One of the main leaders was George Washington, who was an ex-British general and had a vast amount of military knowledge. Many of the colonists were Englishmen and also had knowledge of military fighting, making them better soldiers. The colonists also had a strong will to win the war and receive their independence. The final factor was the balanced armies. Both armies, American and British, were fairly even, eliminating the disadvantage of being outnumbered. Despite the fact that Liberalism was involved in both revolutions, there were external reasons that explained the opposite outcomes of the American and Mexican
In the beginning Texas had a winning streak taking Mexico by surprise in the first couple of battles. They announced their revolution at the Battle of Gonzales where they refused to give up a cannon and simply said “come and take it”. After the Battle of Gonzales the Texan army was feeling mighty powerful. They won multiple Battles including one of the most
With westward expansion becoming more popular, and with people thinking it was their manifest destiny-or God given fate to go west, populations increased. But conflict arose with our southern neighbor Mexico. This conflict could’ve been prevented, or resolved, but instead it grew worse. This conflict is often called the “Mexican American War” but in Mexico it is called the “US Invasion”. On April 24th, 1836 63 American men and officers went just south of the Rio Grande when Mexico attacked.
The American colonist heard about the battle and they faced major decision. Should they join the rebels or remain loyal to the British? With this battle the colonists became more independent in the formation of the continental army preparing for a protective war for
The American Revolution was one of the most important wars that was fought in the history of the United States. The Patriots and the British had two different views on how things should be run in America. Many people have different opinions on why, where and how the war was started. There were a few key battles that helped to influence the outcome of the war. The outcome of the American Revolutionary War influenced the United States way of Freedom and the way the American people live today.
The colonists won the War for Independence due to their superior tactics and soldiering. We won the war because the people of that time had the will to fight. We mainly won the war because of the French. Until the French decided to give aid, our soldiers most likely did not have enough weapons and ammunition. I imagine that there would have been more battles like Breed 's Hill without them.
INTRODUCTION Throughout the 1840s and 1850s a major war happened called the Mexican American War which drastically changed the U.S. and Mexico and lead to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo to be signed and which established the Rio Grande and not the Nueces River as the U.S Border. This also lead to the U.S. annexation of Texas and lead to the Mexico agreeing to sell California and the rest of the territory for 15 million. So you 're probably wondering why the war was fought but you 'll find that out later.
Thomas Jefferson, the author of the declaration of independence, was heavily influenced by Locke’s beliefs. Jefferson believed that all men were created equal, which is a liberal view. The Constitution was also a liberal document that was important in this revolution. The first ten amendments of the Constitution, also known as the Bill of Rights, granted natural born rights, an idea that the liberal thinkers developed and believed in. Liberalism as it pertains to the 1700s means to believe in freedom and equal rights.
Once I get done with that, I will then compare the causes to each other. Let’s begin with the American revolution the conflict arose from growing tensions between residents of Great Britain’s 13 North American colonies and the colonial government, which represented the British crown. Skirmishes between British troops and colonial militiamen in Lexington and Concord in April 1775 kicked off the armed conflict, and by the following summer, the rebels were waging a full-scale war for their independence. France entered the American Revolution on the side of the colonists in 1778, turning what had essentially been a civil war into an international conflict. After French assistance helped the Continental Army force the British surrender at Yorktown, Virginia, in 1781, the Americans had effectively won their independence, though fighting would not formally end until 1783.
There were many disagreements and because of those, many events were the cause of the American Revolution. These events included bloodshed by others, peoples rights weren’t enforced, individuals didn’t receive freedom, and our country was just not yet whole. Despite of the causes of why the road to Revolution took place there were effects afterwards. When American Revolution was over with the The Declaration of Independence came into place, treaties were signed, and the Bill of Rights. Now these effects/events were amazing, it helped our country tremendously.
The United States won its independence for Great Britain during the Revolutionary War. America struggled to get the advantage, but eventually was able to win the war. In the beginning it proved difficult to even acquire the troops necessary to fight a war. The troops they got had no adeptness for fighting. They struggled throughout the war and at times their chances for success looked bleak.
This war started in 1775 and against all odds the colonies managed to defeat one of the most powerful empires in the world at its time in 1783. There were many factors regarding why the
In 1775, the American colonies won the Revolutionary war against Great Britain. The war resulted in America’s independence from Britain and contributed to major fundamental changes in American history. The Americans had a number of advantages that helped them win the war against Britain, however they also faced tremendous difficulty prior to winning the war. To begin, the Americans were outnumbered against a professional, fully equipped army of 50,000 British troops. Unlike the British army, the American army consisted of 20,000 inexperienced troops and faced desperate shortages of firearm, uniforms, and food.
Political, economic, military, and social factors were taken into account during the revolution. These aspects of the war all played a significant role in the outcome of the American Revolution. Since Great Britain was in a tremendous amount of debt, it started social and economic issues with the colonies. The French and Indian War (Seven Years War), fought between the British and the French over the Ohio River Valley was a huge contributing factor to said debt.
In the first source it is being viewed from the communist perspective in how socialism in the Soviet Union was the cause of supporting and emphasizing the Bolsheviks and all the workers, farmers and honest citizens. By doing so, the idea of Liberalism is rejected in the way how the party controlled everything, creating a classless society. The party line integrated its ranks and force becoming a strong, powerful core. They rejected liberalism in having no social classes, no equality and removing every sense of freedom in man. The government abuse of authority led to the over-intervention which in response posed a threat to liberty.
Liberal Democracy is a democratic system of government in which individual rights and freedoms are officially recognized and protected, and the exercise of political power is limited by the rule of law. The word democracy is greek, the word “demos” means people and “kratos” means power. The idea of liberalism first began in the 1600’s with John Locke as he believed that the people should be allowed to remove the government currently ruling when they have misused their power for ulterior motives. Although the seed was planted in the 1600’s, liberal democracy only properly took form in the 1840’s in Canada. Australia and New Zealand followed not long after as they began to use the secret ballot system to elect political leaders.
