Influence on Elizabeth Over the course of life, dozens of people can help shape and influence the way one acts, present themselves, and thinks of themselves as well as others. In the novel Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet’s friends, family, and other acquaintances sculpt the way she lives her life. The people who have the greatest impact on Elizabeth challenge her to think, feel, and trust in a brand new way. Throughout the novel, Mr. Bennet keeps a witty attitude about him, keeping the mood light and enjoyable. This proves especially effective when his tightly wound wife lets her nerves get the best of her. One of five sisters, Elizabeth’s wit and independence make her Mr. Bennet’s favorite daughter. Darcy and Elizabeth led to much growth and self reflection in Elizabeth. Immediately upon meeting Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth developed a prejudice against the man. She bashed his pride, his stubborness, and the way he judged people before becoming fully acquainted with them, but when she looked at herself, she saw many of the same qualities. This spurred a period of growth in Elizabeth’s character which eventually led her to enjoy the company of Mr. Darcy and continued until she found herself in love with the infamous Mr. Darcy. Darcy also inadvertently showed Elizabeth what she searched for in a spouse. After the failure of Mr. Collins and Mr. Wickham, Elizabeth’s had no hope to find herself the perfect partner. As she learned more of Mr. Darcy’s life however, she found him more and more desirable. She learned of his generosity to all: friends, family, subordinates, peers, and especially those who worked for him and his wellbeing. She also saw his wealth on full display with a visit to his estate. At this moment, Elizabeth new she had fallen for the same man she had so strongly hated just weeks before.
