Baseball is considered by many to be America’s favorite pastime. Softball in many aspects is similar to baseball but in reality it is harder to play. This can be shown in all aspects of the game from hitting to pitching to fielding to catching. One major aspect where the difference is obvious is hitting. It has been scientifically proven that a 95 mph fastball generates 2411 lbs of force as it crosses the plate and a softball thrown at 65mph generates even more according to youtube.com. A 65 mph softball pitch from 43 feet is equivalent to a 92 mph baseball pitch from 60.5 feet. A softball pitcher actually releases the ball about 37 feet from the batter which leaves the batter less than 0.35 seconds to make a decision to swing or not. With …show more content…
After release, a softball pitcher is about 37 feet away from the batter. With a ball coming back off of the bat at speeds over 80 mph, the pitcher has 0.29 seconds or less to react to the hit and protect her body As a pitcher, I have felt the pain that has come from not being able to react quick enough. Bruises and knots on my knee, shin, ankle and stomach are a stark reminder to the dangers. A baseball pitcher is about 55 feet away from the batter after pitching, and with the ball coming back around 95 mph, that gives the pitcher .39 seconds to react to the ball according to mathforum.org. This is a tenth of a second more than a softball pitcher; giving a baseball pitcher over 25% more time to react! Since there is a smaller distance between bases in softball, the fielders have less time to react to a hit ball and complete the play. The collegiate softball players run from home to first in a time of about 2.7 seconds. The average collegiate baseball player runs to first in 4.4 seconds. So obviously softball fielders have to react quicker to make the plays. The data shows that softball players have to react more quickly whether it be in hitting, pitching, or fielding. Although baseball might be America’s game, softball is gaining more fans each year due to it being a faster paced game and the athleticism shown by the complexity of the
Breakaway Bases Softball and Baseball are lesser on the scale of injuries during sports. This is because adjustments are always being made to the way the sports are played so they are safer for the players. Many of the injuries that do happen in these sports, however, are from sliding into bases wrong. When sliding, one throws themselves to the ground in an attempt to get under a tag. While doing this, many people have hurt their ankles, legs, or joints by jamming their feet into non-moving bases.
Think about it, swinging a bat and, running the bases are both dangerous components but sliding will most likely be the part that you could get hurt. There’s a quote going around that could easily apply to softball, “If you are going to make your kids tough, which they better be if they are going to survive in the world, you can't interfere when they're doing dangerous things carefully.” So this essay is going to teach you how to slide correctly. When getting ready to slide in softball, remember to stay light on your feet, stay low to the ground, and focus on the bag.
Softball and baseball are often considered to be the same sport due to the similarity between their names. However, that conclusion is far from the truth as each sport has unique rules, playing fields, and methods of playing the game. This is due to the specialization of each sport for a specific gender; softball is played by females and baseball is played by males.
You would be surprised what us players go through, especially the ones that has dedicated their lives to the sport. I’m one of those players. You may not think that it doesn 't matter to us players what you say about the team, but it effects us. From the beginning to the end of softball season it was all about Harleton, we HAD to beat Harleton. The thing is, us softball
Baseball pitchers have to be extremely explosive and create force to produce a good pitch. Some factors that go into a pitch would be velocity, movement, and position. There are many types of pitches that an athlete can do and follows a similar pattern but the factors change. If a pitcher wanted to throw a fastball, they would have to change the velocity of the ball but if the pitcher wanted to throw a curveball they would have to change the type of movement they do. The ultimate goal for any baseball pitcher is to get the ball into the catcher’s mitts without being interfered by the batter at home base.
The first reason softball is harder than baseball is because of hitting. Most college softball pitchers pitch the ball up to 70 mph from 37 feet away, from that distance it takes the ball 0.35 seconds to cross the plate. Most MLB pitchers reach speeds of 100 mph from 60 feet away, from there it takes the baseball 0.38 seconds to cross the plate. The decision time for the batter in softball is only .025 seconds which is 55% less time than an MLB player. In baseball
Many people wonder why a softball is bigger than a baseball. A softball is bigger than a baseball because the game of softball was originally played as indoor baseball. Hancock and the men developed many rules for the indoor game and began designing the field the indoor baseball league emerged in its premier league as it became The Mid Winter Indoor baseball league of Chicago. The game of softball was originally called “Kitten Ball” because it is known not to go as far as a baseball would. Many people were very interested in playing this indoor game so it began to be played outside the following summer.
There isn’t a huge difference between softball and baseball other than a couple rules and the gender playing the sport. People who don’t go outside as much most likely suffer from illness. Some people can’t go outside because they have certain illnesses that won’t let them. Some people just chose not to go outside and that isn’t very healthy. Kids these days usually have an excuse such as playing video games or saying they have nothing to do outside.
At first you might not think you’re good but you can get better. That was my reasoning on why you should play softball. Along with some facts about the sport. A lot of girls play the sport and I hope that you will too.
“Play for the name on the front of jersey, not the back.” A popular quote for sports players. What does it mean? Anyone who’s seen any sports game with a team uniform would know that the team name is located on the top of the front side of the jersey and the player’s last name goes on the top of the backside of the jersey. So, the quote means play for your team and not for yourself.
As I sit on my bed deciding on what to write about, I glance over at my trophy case. Glittering with golden light, my trophies remind me of all the accomplishments I have been awarded during the short span of my life. My accomplishments are mostly involving either cheerleading or softball. I have been a part of both teams for six years now, counting middle school. On the softball team I can play any position except for pitcher.
Over the years I’ve gotten stronger, faster, and overall better at softball. Four years into it and I have some great and some painful stories. I’ve learned many things about softball, but one that has stuck out to me and that also applies to life is that it can be fun.
We then watch carefully the opposing team’s pitcher as she warms up. As a lead off hitter, it is my job to do anything possible to get on base. By working the count I am frisking with the pitcher to get into her head. I then get exactly what I want, a pitch that could change the outcome of the entire game. Once I take a swing at the perfect pitch you can hear the crack of the bat forcefully pushing the ball to get a base hit.
A softball field is very simple. It has this red tinted dirt, fresh cut green grass, 4 white bases, freshly white chalked lines, and a group of girls that love the game. The softball field is so simple, but yet so beautiful to look at and play on. The cages come along with the softball field as well. The cages or even more simple than the field, all it has is a net, some turf ground, a bucket of
Nine-inch balls are used to play in the game of baseball, while softball players play with twelve-inch balls. The weight of the balls is also a difference. Baseballs are only a little over five ounces, whereas softballs are seven ounces. Even with both baseballs and softballs being sphere shaped, the main and most noticeable difference in the balls is its appearance. Baseballs are small, white balls with red seams, while softballs are bigger, neon yellow balls with red seams.
