Youth depression Depression. What is depression to you? To me, depression is the constant feeling of being numb. Being numb to emotions, being numb to life, and being numb to your senses. It’s about waking up in the morning and wanting to go straight back to bed. Depression is as if you have come to a point in your life where you no longer want to see what is in front of you because the past is where you want to spend the majority of your time. In this presentation, I will take you on a journey through the types of depression youths face, its causes, its symptoms, treatments and the charities that help with addressing the problem. Approximately 14.8 million people in the United States, age eighteen and older, are currently suffering from this disorder known as depression. So what is depression anyways?
In the Merriam Webster Dictionary, it states that depression can be a feeling of sadness, anger, anxiety, psychotic disorder that can be followed by sadness, inactivity, difficulty thinking and concentrating, decrease or increase on appetite, sleeping all day or not sleeping, hopelessness, and sometimes suicidal
Although it seems more people are depressed in our time we also have made serious progress in understanding depression individually and as a whole. People who suffer from depression often express feelings of emptiness, sadness, worthlessness and report suicidal thoughts. Feelings of being overwhelmed are also symptoms. Jane’s sister in law Jennie said “the paper stained everything is touched” (653). Depression is very overwhelming as if you are stained with depression just as the crumbling wallpaper stains everything it touches.
People that are unable to express their feelings are more likely to express depression. Depression is not necessary a stage going through people with mental illness, but rather anyone that is unable to express themselves. Depression is a condition which a person feels unimportant, sad, and hopeless. Studies have shown that those who developed drug problems were more likely to show depression. As has been said, researchers at the University of Texas studied 32 teens, 19 of whom had been maltreated in childhood but did not have a current psychiatric disorder.

Teens who are depressed may feel hopeless and helpless and it can seem like no one understand and depression is far more common in teens than you may think. Many people assume depression is just a change in behavior that may die out in a few weeks or even a month; however there is much more to it than that. Often, it goes without notice because people don 't want to face the fact or don 't know what is actually going on with them.
