This article titled “Internet Access: Gordian net” in The Economist which is technological, business and economics based in nature, speaks about net neutrality, a concept that advocates that Internet service providers and government should treat all the data on the Internet equally. A question that this article tries to answer is “How has net neutrality come under the threat in a world that is driven by profit motives?” The article answers the previous question through its main argument that “To ensure that net neutrality pertains over the Internet, it is necessary to get rid of monopolies and regulators must be given greater power to curb underhand

in The Economist examines the profit margins and extremely successful business strategies of Apple Inc. This article focuses on the economics based and financial aspects of this powerful enterprise. The main idea of this article can be “Apple’s soaring success in the market due to the sales of the iPhones may not be profitable for them in the long run.” This argument or thesis tries to answer the question “What has contributed to Apple’s rapid growth in the market? What are the business risks that Apple Inc. must take into account for this continued success?” The article provides sufficient evidence of Apple’s success by providing facts about the company’s profit and revenue such as “…it had made $18 billion in its latest fiscal quarter…” and “…sales of its hugely popular iPhone, which accounted for over two-thirds of its $74.6 billion revenue.” It also speaks of Apple’s success in China, where Apple’s competitors have failed to establish a clear market, by mentioning “Apple’s revenue from the Greater China region, which includes Taiwan and Hong Kong, soared 70% to just over $16 billion.” The article also briefly mentions Apple Inc.’s progress in relation to its competitors such as Google, Facebook etc. The article also sheds light on some business risks such Apple’s over-dependency on its popular iPhone devices and how it might not be sustainable in the future. To conclude, the article does a fairly good job as it provides numerical facts and …show more content…
The article focuses on the security concerns and how to improve these security measures in the era of rising terrorism threats. The article tries to answer the research question, “What are the reasons for the increasing threats to western countries and how are western security agencies trying to deal with these increasing threats?” The article aims at answering the previous question by proving the main idea that, “The western security forces power and skills may not be sufficient to deal with the increasing terrorism threats” through multiple supports and reasons. The article provides three clear reasons for the increasing terrorism threats especially in western nations such as “unending civil war in Syria and the rise of Islamic State (IS)”, “…Commando style attacks…” and “…losing the technological edge.” It addresses issue of liberty vs. security such as de-radicalization seldom succeeds once the jihadists are back home, however, refusing people reentry into the country would go against international law. It advocates the need for a balance between liberty and security. In conclusion, the article does a great job of specifying the problem at hand with sufficient evidence. However, it fails to provide strong and implementable solutions to this
Net-neutrality is the principle that providers of Internet services enable access to all contents with no prejudice or discrimination against sites or products regardless of the source. In December, the U.S. government repealed the national regulations that prevented “Internet Service Providers from blocking legal content, throttling traffic or prioritizing content on their broadband networks” in favor of a “looser set of requirements that ISPs disclose any blocking or prioritization of their own content.” In summary, the government has decided to change net-neutrality and make it easier to profit from. The government’s want, and subsequent success, to change the strict guidelines by which net-neutrality operated with is supported by the Chairman
With the world population being 7,259,902,243 people, a grossly huge amount of people use the Internet, the number being 3,366,261,156 people worldwide. That ends up being almost half of the population, the percentage being 46.4% I one hundred percent disagree with the “decision” of the government ridding of the Internet entirely, as if that isn't clear enough already. Though the government might find the termination of the Internet useful in some circumstances, I have no doubt that it may result in riots, violence, protests, and more in order to get it
The Breeze Article Op-Ed College is a period of time in a student’s life where everything they have ever known is transformed. Before college, the primary focus is memorization and learning the basics needed to “get by” in society. However, the entire purpose of postsecondary education is to learn how to be successful in society, proving the importance of history classes in college. By taking even one history class, the student will have the ability to relearn key details, while studying the reality of those events.
Tighter airport security has improved airline transportation’s security and reduced the number of attacks on airlines since 9/11. For example the Christmas 2009 day tentative to blow up the plane during a flight Amsterdam Detroit was a tactic to escape airport security measures, which were effective in controlling terrorist behaviors (Howard & Hoffman, 2012). Tapped phone lines and internet monitoring have helped to prevent some important plots in the country. “Jihad Jane” activities were uncovered by such means (Howard & Hoffman, 2012). The support of counterterrorism by citizens means that sacrifice is needed from every one.
One of the first hits, when network neutrality is searched, are websites who want to save network neutrality and present who are for and especially who are against. Network neutrality seems to be a hot topic all over the world, with important players involved like the big telecom companies on the one hand and companies like Facebook, Netflix and Mozilla Firefox on the other hand. Network neutrality can be seen as a non-discrimination act against any website, content or application on the Internet. Internet service providers (ISP’S) are not allowed to discriminate; therefor every end user has equal access to all available information and applications, access to an open and free Internet.
A free internet is not one that is unregulated nor is one that is strictly regulated. There exists an elusive measure existing the spectrum that must be fulfilled without tainting the uniqueness of the internet. Two key features of a free internet, net neutrality and online freedom of speech, must be maintained throughout. The internet, as it is now, has paved a new path for communication in the modern era.
