The film Good Will Hunting, exhibits many concepts of interpersonal communication through the different characters who are in the film. Emotions and conflict are the common concepts to be represented. Both run emotions and conflict run high in the film and are visible in multiple ways. The main character Will Hunting is a complex character due to his past and capabilities of his mind. His emotions and his conflicts affect one another. Because of Will Hunting’s difficult upbringing, the way he communicates his emotions in his relationships are detrimental for himself and others, and conflict arises in his relationships due to his inability to express his emotions well. Will grew up in a tough environment because of the types of relationship violence he faced. First, he was abandoned as a child and became an orphan. Further on in the film, Will talks about the physical abuse …show more content…
One big way to improve Will’s communication is to deal with the relationship violence that occurred to him. Sean started this for him in the scene where he tried to get Will to see that his upbringing was not his fault. This was a big step for Will to understand himself and how he should see his relationships. Through Sean, Will also learned some emotional understanding of himself. Emotional understanding will allow him to have emotional competence. Another part of emotional competence he should learn is emotional expression by address his feelings and letting others know what he truly wants. When Will encounters a conflict, it is important he identifies his goals of how he feels, and identify and logically evaluate the choices in front of him in his relationships. He should start to consider how his choice will affect his relationships. Will will start to have a better outlook on relationships and have healthy one’s when he will consider how he can change his communication in relationship, so unhealthy conflict will not
Therefore, Sean had determined that Will had Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) because he experienced a lot of child abuse during his childhood. Since he had PTSD, he had difficultly socializing with others and controlling his anger. After attending several therapy sessions, Will overcame his problems and determined to make changes in his life. While he was attending therapy sessions, he met Skyla, who is a pre-medicine study, at a bar near Harvard University. Several months after they met, Skyla asked Will to move to California with her because she will begin medical school at Stanford.
Watching the "Fireproof" movie, I was able to distinguish several interpersonal communication problems between the main characters. Interpersonal communication is the methods by which people get involved in the conversation to exchange message, information, and feelings to each other both verbally and non-verbally(Stewart, 2012). Every individual has their ideas and approaches to communicate to others. Our processes of communication display as our behavior which causes either success or failure in relationships.
John Hughes’ 1985 movie, The Breakfast Club, offers uncountable examples of the ideologies of interpersonal communication. Five high school students: Allison, the kook, Brian, the brain, John, the criminal, Claire, the princess, and Andrew, the jock, are required to devote the day in Saturday detention. At the end of the day, they discover that they have more in mutual than they ever grasped. I will begin by choosing a scene from the movie and using it to explain what interpersonal communication is. The interpersonal transaction I chose to isolate was the scene where we see Bender and Claire going through each other’s wallet and purse.
Willa was very quiet at the beginning of the story but then tried to become friends with Wyatt at school. Wyatt was very antisocial and nobody would talk to him because they thought he was weird. For example the text explains, “Have a good -” Wrong. “Not interested,” he said. He swung his bag over his shoulder and walked away”(pg.34).
More importantly, though, it is a movie that remarks on communicational issues, conflict escalation, and resolution. There are many causes behind the communicational problems that arise in Arrival. One of these causes is humanity’s fear of the unknown—humans in Arrival fear the extraterrestrials because their motives are unknown. Another one is humans’ tendency to rely on stereotypes and project their own negative traits onto the aliens. As a result of this, they believe the Heptapod’s are hostile, and they turn hostile themselves.
Mrs. Doubtfire is a 1993 comedy starring Robin Williams as Daniel Hillard and Sally Field as Miranda his ex-wife. Daniel is an eccentric actor who specializes in dubbing voices for cartoon characters. He has three children, Lydia, Chris, and Natalie, whom he loves the most. His wife Miranda has different thoughts of him, as being a poor disciplinarian and a bad role model to their children. He lost his job and when getting home, he throws an elaborate and disastrous birthday party for Chris, against Miranda’s instructions.
When certain situations happen to people with good morals, they feel empathy for those who do not understand people as easily. In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill A Mockingbird, a respectable lawyer and his children are involved in many unique experiences that help them learn necessary life lessons about society during the 1900’s. Scout and Jem learn a particularly important lesson about racial injustice when their father takes on a life-changing case. Upstanding characters show empathy more than others since good morals lead to self-respect and happiness, it allows people to appreciate the good around them. Throughout the novel, exemplary characters like Maudie Atkinson, Atticus Finch, and Scout Finch demonstrate empathy for characters who don’t
The movie I decided to choose was Forrest Gump. This movie has a lot of history of the United States that starts from around the 1950s and then into the present. The movie shows many trends in various social movements that were going on in the United States. The main character in the movie, Forrest goes through many individual and social issues through out the movie. Many of the issues are universal, but the movie shows the American nature of the social and individual issues that I believe help Non-American people learn some American culture through a great movie.
The characters in this movie exhibit various interpersonal communication concepts, such as self-concept, convergence, divergence, debilitative, and facilitative emotions, and portray these concepts through their thoughts and actions. Assistant Coach Red Dawson exhibits how a character’s self-concept,
Communication is an important element in video analysis. Ideally, a careful analysis of the different characters in the scene and their role in enhancing interpersonal communication is much more important. In consideration of this concept the underlying principles of interpersonal communication, there is a need to assess its applicability in the movie; Goodfellas. The three-minute scene titled, "I 'm funny how, I mean funny like I 'm a clown" is a reflection of how self-concept, perception, and non-verbal communication work together in the context of dyadic communication.
There is a study in which analyzes the behavior and communication of a person when they come into contact or are acknowledge about some other person or group of people. Hence, this study is known as social psychology. Many aspects fall into this topic and those aspects are presented in the film Crash. Crash a film released in 2004, depicts many aspects that fall into the social psychology realm.
In the movie Inside Out everything essentially takes place inside the mind of an eleven year old girl, Riley. Riley is guided by her emotions of joy, sadness, anger, fear, and disgust. These five core human emotions attempt to advise and navigate her through her everyday life. The emotions and Riley display many nonverbal cues throughout the movie which portray how they are feeling. Watching this movie helped me learn how effective the communication between the characters is, what advice I would give to Riley if I were put in a similar situation, and how this advice is rooted in nonverbal communication.
The whole process seems like constant bickering between two friends. It is not the ideal therapeutic alliance, but it producd a desirable result, which is overcoming difficulties and achieving personal growth. I would not change anything in the film, because the therapeutic process is appropriate because it’s fictional and it works well with Will’s character and personality. Sean constructs a strategic therapeutic process that subtly helps Will without being apparent because Will is not the type of person who would admit needing help. The end of the film is strange because Sean unexpectedly transforms Will by repeating “it’s not your fault.”
