In the epic story the Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is returning from the Trojan war, and on his way home he finds many obstacles ahead of him. Odysseus is the ruler of Ithaca and he is trying to return home to his land. Many creatures try and stop him from achieving his goal of returning home, but he and his crew have to push through and get home. Odysseus portrays bravery and courage leading his crew through these tough challenges. Odysseus heroically leads his crew and himself through dangerous obstacles, but also foolishly endangers them during the journey home. Odysseus is a hero because he is smart. For example, when Odysseus and his men approach the giant he offers him ¨liquor to wash down your scraps of men¨ (Homer 991). Odysseus is clever by doing this because he can predict that the liquor will make him fall asleep. He knows that the boulder that is blocking the entrance is heavy so he doesn 't kill Polyphemus. Instead, Odysseus only hurts him. In addition, when the cyclops asks Odysseus for his name he responds …show more content…
Odysseus is not a hero because he stabs Polyphemus in the eye and blinds him. Odysseus is still a hero because he is a leader. Moreover, after Odysseus and his men fight the Cicones, he orders ¨Back and Quickly! Out to sea again!” (Homer 984). When Odysseus commands his men to go back to sea to voyage, he is a good leader because he is telling his men what to do. He is being a leader by protecting his men from the Ciccone 's army by leaving before reinforcements come. For example, when Odysseus and his men are heading to the sirens Odysseus states “you are to tie me up, tight as a splint” (Homer 1005). Odysseus is an admirable leader when he orders his men to tie him up and do not untie him because he is sacrificing himself for the good of his men. He is a leader when he does this because he lets his men not suffer the sirens while he has to. Odysseus being a leader makes him a hero because he makes bold decisions and he protects himself and his
When he told his men on his ship to start rowing away, they were so shocked and in dismay that they lost most of their comrades because of that, they had no words. This shows that Odysseus is not a hero. A hero is someone who puts the safety of others first yet Odysseus failed to do this countless times and did not try to save even a single of his soldiers from the
Even though some people may argue that Odysseus is not a hero, I maintain that he is a hero because he tried to save his men using bravery and courage,
Brains over brawns is Odysseus’ motto. In the Odyssey, Odysseus is a hero because he stabbed the cyclops in the eye, he was a great leader, and he defeated all of penelope's suitors. He was arrogant at times and that's why you might say he is not a hero. But every time he made a mistake he backed it up.
Odysseus is a hero because he is a bold and clever person, who uses these skills to do noble things. Odysseus was a brave soldier who fought in the Trojan War, helping the Greeks into the city of Troy, allowing them to win the war, showing that he is brilliant and brave. Also in The Odyssey, Odysseus keeps his group in order and saves his men multiple times, while they are trying to return home to Ithaca. He keeps them from doing nonsensical actions, to prevent them from danger. This evidence shows that Odysseus has much
In conclusion Odysseus is a hero because he is intelligent, resilient, and humble. He uses his wit and intelligence to save his men in more way than one. His resilient attitude has helped him overcome the direst circumstances. His humility and how he attained it show just how much change and good he can do.
Everyone has their own definition of a hero. Many people think of superheroes who fight for the good of humanity. Others think of great warriors in ancient Greece and Rome. While it's nice to know what heroes might look like, it's more important to understand what makes someone a hero. Odysseus is one of these important heroes whose actions should be explained.
This is important, because this reveals that Odysseus is an epic leader, because he does what he has to do as an epic leader, and if anything goes wrong it would be his men’s fault. The indicated statement distinguishes Odysseus’ men, being ordinary people from Odysseus being a hero. The trait of leadership is where Odysseus surpasses most heroes and thus proving that he meets the standards of a stereotypical epic hero. In conclusion, Odysseus is an epic hero, because his heroic capabilities and traits such as intelligence and perseverance cancel out his vulnerabilities. He is clearly differentiated and recognized between ordinary men and heroes.
Odysseus is a hero. In my opinion a hero is someone who fights for what they believe in and fights for others. A hero gives his life to save another person no matter what the risk. Odysseus fought for what he needed. He fought for his wife, and his child.
The mighty Odysseus has proved himself as a hero in The Odyssey in multiple occasions. First, to be a hero I believe that bravery and cleverness are needed to perform a heroic act. There is no need for a certain superpower or strength in my opinion to become a hero. Odysseus has shown there characteristic in his twenty year Odyssey as he searches for his way back to Ithaca. First, Odysseus’ bravery, he shows his bravery by confronting massive and terrifying creature that endangered Odysseus and his men 's’ lives.
He or she must possess many characteristics that make them good leader, one who can affectively execute operations using these very traits. Unfortunately, along with these benefits they must be flawed (hubris). With his incredible courage and his unmatched wisdom, King Odysseus has been equipped with many great qualities. Sure Odysseus’ arrogance may take up the better half of his personality, but underneath his tough, self loving shell is a great leader. One well deserving of the title hero.
Odysseus is a hero because he is smart. Odysseus outsmarts the cyclops “Nobody- thats my name” (Book#9 Line#410). This shows Odysseus is smart and he used this plan to get away from the cyclops. It also shows that he is smart because he knew the cyclops would say that “Nobody” is blinding him. Odysseus came up with a plan to get rid of the suitors “Look, your crucial test is finished” (Book#22 Line#5).
Odysseus isn't a hero at all. There are a lot of reason to throw out that will prove he ist a hero. Therefore .Odysseus reminds me of batman. The reason why, is batman doesn't have superpowers as a mortal god.
Some characteristics that contribute to being a hero include doing tasks that benefit others and being fearless, but the greatest characteristic is making decisions without the help of others. Again, Odysseus falls short of what he is expected to do. Throughout his entire journey, Odysseus did not make one decision without the help of a god and frankly, Odysseus would not be alive without the gods telling him what to do. “Then Skylla made her strike, whisking six of my best men from the ship.” Watching six of his best men get eaten by a six-headed monster could not have been easy for Odysseus because those men were the people that had kept him alive thus far.
Odysseus is heroic, courageous, outrageous, bold, fearless, manful, and valiant. Odysseus is heroic because he tricked the cyclops thinking that nobody was his name. Odysseus told his men to make a sharp spear and drop the spear in the cyclops eye so he can remove the giant rock and escape. Odysseus is fearless because him and his son killed the men that tried to take over his kingdom and marry his wife. Another thing is that Odysseus is bold because he made his son believe he was the father after the son did not believe him.
Some people may think that Odysseus is a better hero, but he cares nothing of his crew, and his only desire is to reach Ithaca. To Begin, Odysseus is dauntless. Odysseus is a hero because he slays the vile cyclops, because he is eating his men. Others may think that he kills the cyclops to save his men, but he
