Traditionally women have a hard role as a mother and as a wife.They are forced to do a set of tasks in their everyday life. If they do not fulfil these tasks then they risk being an outcast in society. In “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid, it is shown that women feel constantly threatened that society will reject them if they do not conform to the norms. Even if a girl followed all of these rules, it is still possible that she would not be a respected woman in society. Today, the norms are much different from what they were in the early 1950’s, however, it is still difficult for women to fully fulfill their role. There is always something standing in the way.
The syntax used in “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid is very important when addressing how important it is for girls to follow these rules in order to become a respected woman in society. The girls is wondering what will happen if the baker will not let her feel or touch the bread. The mother figure claims that you work so hard to become a respected women and the baker does not trust you near the bread and the mother figure would be upset if the baker would not let her feel the bread. The bread symbolises the constant rejection from society women are afraid of. The bead is pure and wholesome and she may contaminate or ruin the bread If a she does not conform to the set of tasks she is expected to do. The bread is the respect woman get when doing what society wants from them. However, even if they do all these things, they can still have a bad representation. Being a woman directly relates to the role her gender is given. Woman are considered the weaker sex and are given the less strenuous role in the marriage between a male and female.
