During the late 1800’s, the Social Gospel Movement was brining several social reforms upon American society. One of the most active participants of the movement was American reformer, Jane Addams. She visited the first settlement house to be built, Toynbee Hall, in 1886 while on a trip to England. It was this experience that made her see the good these houses could bring to many poor communities. Since then, she always spoke in favor of social reforms, and proposed many solutions to the issues urbanization brought. Jane Addams is very important because in the year 1890, she built her own settlement house called the Hull House.
