Jane Eyre has been both praised and denounced for its portrayal of gender roles. While some critics argue that Charlotte Brontë fails to shatter the misogynistic idealism that trapped women, others contend that she broke traditional gender stereotypes/biases replacing them with feminism. Through the development of Jane as a passionate, rebellious heroine, the creation of a complex power dynamic between Jane and Rochester, and the representation of Jane’s repressed passion through Bertha, Brontë counters sexist prejudice against women ultimately concluding the novel with a strong argument of feminism. In this passage, the first sentence establishes a strict power dynamic between Jane and her master, John. John’s declaration that Jane should not rummage his bookshelves creates the image of a savage animal intruding upon his perfect life. This sets a negative tone and creates palpable tension that drives the rest of the piece and later will lead Jane to discover her own-self expression. When John states that all the bookshelves in the house are his, Brontë’s choice to italicize the word are emphasizes the disrespect and incivility with which John talks down to Jane. It’s as if Jane is in need of being reminded where she stands (in social class), and this only further represses Jane, creating a sense of fear inside of her. She is accustomed to obeying every order thrown at her, and the simple declaration that she did so without giving it any second thought reveals the way that her upbringing had trained her to conform to the laws of society and repressed any ounce that was left of her
Jane doubts herself and her self-worth, “Why was I always suffering, always browbeaten, always accused, for ever condemned? Why could I never please? Why was it useless to try to win anyone’s favor?” (Bronte 36). Jane questioned her own perseverance.
In the short story, Jane states that “He is very careful and loving, and hardly lets me stir without special direction. ”(Stetson 648). Jane's husband is further proving his controlling nature, as he “directs” Jane's behaviors, and doesn't let her really make her own decisions without his input. The quote “And John is so queer now, that I don't want to irritate him. ”(Stetson 654) relays the message that in the area that they lived in, it was normal for the woman to be inferior to the man, and almost have a skittish attitude towards them ,as they were worried what would happen if they stood up for
It is ironic that Jane is seen as the guilty party in the incident with John Reed because John started the fight when he slapped Jane. Then when John’s sisters, Eliza and Georgina, go to “tattle tale” on Jane, their mother blames Jane for the whole situation. Jane compares John to a “murderer,” “slave-driver,” and “Roman Emperors” (Bronte 9). During this comparison, she is implying that he is a very cruel and awful person. That he would beat her and boss her around.
In Charlotte Brontë 's, Jane Eyre, we see a reversal of gender roles for both Mr. Rochester and Jane. In multiple scenes of the book the two switch back and forth from their “natural” roles, which ends up benefiting the two. In the story, Mr. Rochester, the big burly owner of Thornfield, occasionally drops his natural patriarchal role to become a feminine character. Jane also does this as she takes on a more masculine role from time to time, and drops her feminine complacency. While usually both characters dropping their gender-specific roles could turn out bad, in this story, dropping the stereotypical gender roles by blurring them leads to happiness by the end of the story.

One of the biggest character foils in Jane Eyre is between Mr. Edward Rochester and St. John Rivers. From the first time we meet these characters, it is easy to tell the two apart. While one is ruled by a religious forces the other is controlled by emotions. Jane has to make a choice, and decide how she is going to live the rest of her life. At the end of the novel, she makes a choice between what is expected of her, and what she wants.
When Bronte states, “The Eliza, John, and Georgina were now clustered round their mamma in the drawing room... Me, she had dispensed from joining the group; saying “she regretted to be under the necessity of keeping me at a distance;...” The imagery represented here demonstrates that unlike all the other kids, Jane was the one that was left out. Bronte 's Jane Eyre transcends the genres of literature to depict the emotional and character development of its protagonist. Although no overall genre dominates the novel exclusively, the vivid use of setting contributes towards the portrayal of Bronte’s bildungsroman (Realisms, 92) and defines the protagonist’s struggles as she grapples with her inner-self, and the social expectations of her gender. The novel incorporates Jane’s frequent conflicts, oppression, isolation and self-examination as she defends her identity and independence. Set amongst five separate locations, Bronte’s skilful use of literal and metaphorical landscapes, nature, and imagery, skilfully intertwines with the plot and denotes each phrase of her maturity.
In Charlotte Bronte’s novel “Jane Eyre” Edward Fairfax Rochester plays a contributing role in Janes development and growth as a character and human being in the Victorian time period. Not only does he play a large role in her independency, but in her emotional and spiritual growth as well. She grows around him whether she likes it or not. Due to Edwards manipulative and seductive nature, jane has to grow and develop in a way that has her frequently questioning her own ideals, whether that be spiritually or morally, and strengthening her independence by constantly refusing her feelings for him and adapting to punishing situations. Edward also opens Janes eyes to a world that is bigger than she realized due to his company at the house, wealth, and opportunities at the favorable Thornfeild manor at which she was employed by him.

With Charlotte Brontë’s father being a clergyman and member of the Church, Charlotte Brontë, as well as her sisters have been in constant contact with religion throughout their whole lives. Even though her father gave Charlotte relative freedom in developing her own ideas and beliefs, religion was an important factor in Charlotte Brontë’s life nevertheless. Through Jane Eyre Charlotte Brontë expresses several issues of Victorian Britain, such as gender equality or the class system but religion is a reoccurring and omnipresent subject in Jane Eyre. Throughout the whole novel Jane is confronted with religious characters such as Mr Brocklehurst, Helen Burns and St. John Rivers. Those characters all represent three vastly different variations of Christian faith in the Victorian Era.
My Summer Project is on the novel Jane Eyre written by Charlotte Bronte. My project initially highlights the problems faced by a women in 19th Century. The issues come in the way of people when the two belongs to different class and status. It also highlights various themes, the writer has used in the novel and also how every theme is being shown with examples. The novel is about love and determination, which can be understood from the view of an orphaned girl, who apart from being a part of all the difficulties and problems of class and status, she always believed in love and was determined by it.
The titular Jane in Jane Eyre struggles to free herself from the power of others to achieve independence throughout the course of the book. As a child, she fights against unjust authority figures, and as an adult, she spurs multiple unequal marriage proposals. Bronte, through Jane asserts that a woman should be independent from others. When Jane was young, she tried to free and defend herself from unjust authority figures. When Jane 's aunt unfairly confines Jane to the Red Room, Jane launches into a verbal diatribe against her aunt.
Jane goes against the expected type by “refusing subservience, disagreeing with her superiors, standing up for her rights, and venturing creative thoughts” (Margaret, 1997, p. 325-346). She is not only successful in terms of wealth and position, but more importantly, in terms of family and love. These two needs that have evaded Jane for so long are finally hers. Adding to her victory is her ability to enjoy both without losing her hard-won independence. Everybody has the rights to pursue happiness, to pursue the true spirit of life, which can be seen from Jane Eyre’s struggle for independence and equality.
Charlotte Bronte takes us on a journey from the point which Jane Eyre, the protagonist lives with her aunt and cousins whom very much dislikes her in Gateshead to her going to a boarding school in Lowood, after which she becomes a governess in Thornfield where she falls in love with Mr. Rochester her employer whom she later finds out is married to a mad woman by the name of Bertha Mason, upon her discovery of this she picks up and leaves Thornfield, she then ends up at Marsh End where he meets her relatives. The novel carries us through ever important event in her life, which introduces us to new aspects of her personality, up until her eventual marriage to Mr. Rochester. The novel fits this theme as its protagonist chooses individualism as she refuses to take the role subservience as that of a traditional female of the Victorian era society, she stands up for her rights and want she believes in, she ventures in her own unique thoughts, and stands by her views even if it means disagreeing with those superior to her.
