“Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light,” Rowling said this powerful, inspiring message in her book, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (“J.K. Rowling Quotes”). Rowling is a popular and wealthy novelist, but, who is she? Rowling was born on July 31, 1965 in Yate, England to parents, Anne and Peter (“J.K Rowling Biography”). Rowling has a younger sister named Diana (Pollack and Belviso 9). As a child, Jo liked to tell her sister stories and play very imaginative games (10). Rowling, her sister, and her mother, spent most of Rowling’s childhood in Gloucestershire, England (9,11). After nine years, they moved to a small village called Tutshill. She soon discovered that her made-up adventures where “more fun than the real thing,” and took her interest further into writing. Rowling discovered Jane Austen, her favorite author, when she was younger (23,24). She quickly started to enjoy Austen’s books, and loved the way of writing she used in her books. Rowling was inspired the most by Jane’s book, Emma, and even put some of Austen’s ideas, in her own words, in her writing.
