The early 1900s was the beginning of the prohibition. With the ban of the distribution of all alcohol came the start of organized crime. Many people helped launch the Gangster Era. One in particular became one of the more notorious to do so. His name is John Dillinger. Professional bank robber, expert escape artist, and an all around dangerous gangster. He was one of the biggest contributors to the Gangster Era of the 1920s and 1930s. He was seen as a hero in the reason that he stole the money from big companies and corporations; the same companies that took advantage of low income citizens. Even though he was extremely dangerous and violent, the life of crime made him very prosperous and wealthy.

His gang was involved in many shootouts with the law, including police officers and FBI agents. Dillinger himself was responsible for at least 10 murders, including a sheriff and innocent bystanders (Crimemuseum.org). He was charged with the murder of sheriff William O' Malley on January 25, 1934 (Findingdulcinea.com) The gang terrorized the Midwest, robbing banks, police arsenals, staging jail breaks, and other rarely seen crimes by this time. One of their many shootouts occurred when FBI agents got wind of a possible hideout being used by Dillinger. This hideout, the Hellman's apartment, was compromised when the FBI showed up. The result was a gunfight. This shootout involved one of the gang members, Homer Van Meter, and the agents. Van Meter managed to escape by forcing a truck driver out of his truck and using it as a getaway …show more content…
Although being notorious and pursued by many investigators, he spent little time behind bars. This was because he was expertly evasive. When he was captured, he managed to break out. He gained a lot of attention for being skilled at jail breaks. With mass publicity came the increasingly high chance of being identified. The FBI appointed Melvin Purvis to the task of capturing Dillinger and his gang. To make sure he wasn’t caught, he turned to plastic surgery.Dillinger was one of the first to use the painful and time consuming procedure. Altering his appearance made it easier to evade the FBI on many occasions. One surgeon presented the option of fingerprint obliteration. The operation is painful, but would allow him to go undetected. Dillinger decided he would go through with this and it proved to be successful. Not too long after, President Hoover ordered surgeons to report whenever they obliterate someone's fingerprints (Crimemuseum.org). After an eight and a half year sentence, Dillinger robbed a bank in Bluffon, Ohio. He was arrested on September 22 and awaited trial in a jail in Lima, Ohio. Four of Dillinger's companions broke him out while posing as officers. After detection, the men shot an officer and left him to die. On another occasion, Dillinger's plans for a prison break were found. He rejected all ownership of the plan. Four days later the same plans were used to help 8 of Dillinger's friends
John Dillinger is an amazing character who stole from the rich and gave to the poor. “”He was a modern day Robin Hood””(During the 1930’s). Johnny had a very restricted childhood. John's mother Molly Dillinger died at the age of 37; he was only 3 when she had a stroke that led to her death. Before her passing she had 2 sons and a daughter.
“Prohibition, which was ratified as the 18th Constitutional Amendment in 1919. Illegalizing the production, distribution, and consumption of alcoholic beverages- all of which were corollaries to the amendment- did not curb the desire of Chicagoans for liquor or beer”(University of Michigan 1). The Prohibition clearly didn’t strike well with the people of Chicago as many disapproved of the amendment, one of those being Al Capone. Al Capone, who grew up in New York moved to Chicago with Torrio and his gang in 1909 right before the 18th amendment was created and enforced. He was a very feared and dominant gangster as his nickname was “Scarface” after being slashed in the face in a fight at a hotel in 1917.
Al Capone Mobsters was a term that describes a group of gangsters in the 1920’s. Gambling, Prostitution, and Murder went hand in hand with the term of mobster. Every mafia group has a leader. Al Capone was a dangerous mobster who was a Mafia crime lord and had took part in illegal alcohol, illegal drugs, prostitution, and illegal gambling during the 1920s (History).
The Secretary of Treasury, Andrew Mellon, set out to find the evidence to prosecute Capone. Capone was jailed for a period of time for carrying a concealed weapon until March 16, 1930. It was not until Elmer Irey placed undercover agents within Capone’s crew did law enforcement have a chance of getting hard evidence. An agent ended up dead before he could testify. However, Irey had two bookkeepers of Capone’s businesses there to testify that were protected by the police before the trial.
The Texas police hired an old retired cop to catch them his name was Captain Frank Hamer. They committed crimes several states including Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, New Mexico, and Louisiana. Including their final act of stealing a car and getting shot to death. A cop by the name of Captain Frank Hamer just to catch the notorious couple / group.
When Capone started school, he was one of the best students, but when he started failing and found out he had to repeat the 6th grade, he started playing hookie. Once the Prohibition law had been set, it started more crime. That’s when Al Capone became one of the biggest criminals in history. While the Prohibition law was set, Al Capone started selling illegal liquor to people who were desperate.
Eliot Ness, born April 19, 1903, in, Chicago, Illinois, knew little of what he was going to do. When he grew up, he went to the University of Chicago majoring in commerce, and law and political science. Eliot Ness led a law enforcement group, during the Prohibition Era in 1930-1931, called the “Untouchables”. They’re called “The Untouchables” because they couldn’t be bribed unlike other police men.
Chicago has a major problem, a cruel, and rich gangster named Al Capone. Capone is notorious in the city for the illegal distribution of liquor, and brutal acts of enforcing his business. Who will stop Capone from enforcing his monstrous agenda? That’s where our heroes come in. Lights, camera, action; we have The Untouchables.

Guns, gangs, women, alcohol, gambling, are just some things that come to mind when I hear prohibition. According to the online source American History, The Prohibition is the act of prohibiting the manufacturing, storage, transportation, and sale of alcohol, including any alcoholic beverage. This led to the biggest crime rates of all time. At the head of all the crime was one man. His name, Alphonse Capone aka (Scarface) .
During the 1920’s gang related crime was a serious issue. The leader of all this violence and corruption was a man named Al “Scarface” Capone (“Al Capone”). This organized crime, dehumanization, and corruption, became the ultimate image of Chicago for people throughout the world. He was largely immersed in things like gambling, prostitution, and the illegal sale of liquor. He was not convicted for any of his crimes, even the St. Valentine's Day massacre of 1929, until he was imprisoned for tax evasion (Horan).
Al Capone Al Capone, a mob boss. In 1920s the mob was at its peak. The mob made alcohol, had prostitutes and gambled during the prohibition. The prohibition was when the 18th amendment was passed, the 18th amendment banned alcohol in the United States. Capone was one of the more well known mob bosses.

John Dillinger was one of the most notorious criminals in American history. He was known to be part of the most organized and deadly bank robbing gang and highly wanted by the FBI. John began his criminal behavior at a young age, initiating his urge to become a professional bank robber. Using the psychodynamic theory, social learning theory and the differential association theory, I hope to analyze the factors that triggered John Dillinger's criminal behavior that was present in his childhood, leading to his adulthood and how he managed to maintain his label as a thief. John Herbert Dillinger was born on June 22, 1903, in Indianapolis, Indiana, the youngest child to John Wilson Dillinger and Mary Ellen Lancaster.
