What influenced Tandy is Wales Goebel (an evangelist), Hank Erwin (the team’s chaplain), God, the religion (Christianism), Debbie Gerelds (his wife), Julius Clark, sports. As an example, the religion influenced him, because when he decided to become Christian, he started to care more about his players. He started to love each of his players for the person they were and that changed the way he coached. He became a human coach, more loved by his students, but he continued to be rough as a leader.
Kierra Jordan February 23, 2017 Patricia Sue Head Summit left her mark on Earth as one greatest coaches to ever coach the game of basketball. In her 64 years of living, she created a legacy, dynasty, and was the epitome of success in women’s basketball. I would say Summitt was the chosen one since she was hired as the head coach of the University of Tennessee women’s basketball organization in 1974, the same year graduated college with her bachelor’s degree. She remained as the head coach for the Lady Volunteers for the next 38 years before retiring in 2012 due to being diagnosed with dementia.
One would think a coach would have a semi decent relationship with their players; however that was not the case with Coach Mel Thompson and the Citadel basketball team. Throughout the memoir, My Losing Season by Pat Conroy, it is evident Mel gave everyone on the team, including Pat a difficult time. Mel’s behavior towards the team helped Pat improve himself not only as an athlete, but as a person and writer. “If Pat scores one or two points a game and runs the team well, we can’t ask any more from him this year”, is not something a supportive coach would say about one of their players. Mel Thompson is not exactly the supportive coach on this team.
In “Qualities for a Great Sports Coach,” it says, “Being aware of individual differences in athletes is an important ingredient in coaching excellence” (2023). This is showing that he has improved in learning athletes, he has gotten to know them in the process and has seen each of their differences to give them an even better understanding of the sport. He deserves the Jefferson Award because he is aware of other people's differences. For instance, Ben Olson deserves the Jefferson Award for helping my sister, Avery Olson, learn baseball and softball. She has a hard time paying attention to the sport so he knows the right way she likes to learn and how she learns best.
Finding unique ways to encourage grown men making millions of dollars to play a game seems like a simple concept, however we have seen many struggle to do just that over the years. Jackson creatively found ways to extract the desired changes from his players. Specifically, when dealing with Shaquille O’Neil, Jackson told him not to be afraid of Allen Iverson’s penetration move which resulted in Shaq stepping up and reducing Iverson’s impact for the rest of the game (Jackson, 2013, p. 227) Another time, Jackson told the press that Shaq wasn’t playing well because his toe hurts and although Shaq came back with a big game, he also responded negatively towards Jackson in his own interview (Jackson, 2013, p.
If we were to look back, the leader or coach we respect most is the one who pushed us to be that greatest that we could be. Although we did not like being pushed at the time, being told we could give more is often what teams need in order to succeed. Herb Brooks pushed his players to believe that they had greatness within them. His players, including many other people did not believe at first. But his players later came to believe because their coach believed.
It’s that success and the sacrifices he made along the way that has earned the respect of his peers and led to him receiving the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Basketball Coaches Association during the 2012 NBA
Within thirty-eight seasons of coaching, her players made their impact around the world due to her prominent influence. She held a standard of her players which was higher than any other coach as she was envisioned as the toughest coach in college basketball. Candace is never humble while discussing the ways that Summitt altered her life by guiding her how to not only lead her team, but how to lead her family. To this day, Parker continues to remark on the reputable works of Pat Summitt. With her passing just a year ago, hours before Candace Parker took the court to defeat a fellow WNBA team, it was evident that the difference Pat had on not only Candace, but the world, far extended the game of basketball.
Coach John Wooden was successful because he actually and truly lived out his philosophy, that was intertwined in his pyramid of success, through meaningful and trustworthy relationships with his players where he gave them a positive and consistent environment for them to be successful, which according to his philosophy, could only be attained when they made the effort to be the best that they were capable and that was what would give them peace of mind in the end regardless of the score. I think this allowed his players freedom to be themselves and play their best while not being pressured to worry about the score board or what the media thought about the game. His former players have repeatedly stated that Coach Wooden never talked about winning, only about playing to the best of their ability.

Before Kareem Abdul-Jabbar spent 20 years in the national basketball association, he was Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr. born in New York, New York. His father was a police officer whom only had one son. Ferdinand stood 5 foot 8 inches at just 9 years old and by time he got to the eighth grade he had already grown a foot, and could dunk a basketball. As a sophomore in highschool he averaged 19 points and 18 rebounds a game, his senior year he averaged 30 points a game. Pat Riley’s “The winner within” is a life plan for the professional basketball players he coached in the NBA, and the leadership skills he had to lead his team to victory. Every chapter in his book focuses on one subject, and every subject for each chapter gives different ways that a team can become successful on and off the court. Riley’s coaching plan is not just for the court but it can be used in everyday life. Every strategy he gives us in each chapter becomes inspiring and motivation.
Jordan’s Moment In Habersham’s story “Jordan’s Moment,” he writes about Michael Jordan’s moment during the last finals game against the Utah Jazz. As a player in the National Basketball Association (N.B.A.), Habersham argues that Michael Jordan is the world 's greatest basketball player of all time. As a lifetime fan and player of basketball, I have noticed that Jordan 's style of play is still relevant and deadly in today’s game. People and players look up to Michael as the greatest player. In most people 's opinions, there are several reasons why Michael Jordan is labeled as the world 's greatest basketball player: intelligence, work ethic, and creativity.
“A coaching philosophy is vital for long term success to meet the challenges of preparing athletes to do their best” (Smelley, 2013) A philosophy is a statement of intention which explores the key concepts of axiology, ontology, epistemology and pedagogy. The first concept of axiology examines an individual 's principles, ethics, morals and values developed personally through experiences and surroundings. How a coach is able to channel these notions that could have a significant effect on their athletes and their ability as a coach. In developing ethics and morals such as fair play, acceptance, respect and bestowing equal opportunities upon athletes a coach is able to alongside the athletes create a safe and open environment in which the
