Follow the leader, a.k.a. do what the first person does and don’t do it wrong or you are out. This becomes burnt into children’s minds as what they think leadership is and has become what many people think it must be. Contrarily, a flourishing leader is one who listens. Who takes all member’s ideas into consideration, makes sure all are heard, and keeps a group in order while still taking into account what the group wants. Yet there are also bad leaders on the spectrum. These poor leaders could abuse their powers, no matter how little control they actually have. After the project’s completion, groups with these adamant, sometimes control freak leaders will likely find their ideas to be less developed than that of a group with a more attentive …show more content…
Odysseus, the main character, is a great example of a leader, even if the word would not have been around at the time to describe him. On one venture, Odysseus and his crew ended up trapped in a cyclops’ cave. Formerly having eaten several of Odysseus’s men, the Cyclops planned on finishing the rest of them, and saving Odysseus for last. The remaining crew plan on impaling the Cyclops’ eye, and beforehand had sharpened a tree to a point, where Odysseus narrates, “Now, by the gods, I drove my big hand spike deep in the embers, charring it again, and cheered my men on with battle talk to keep their courage up: no quitting now. ... I drew it from the coals and my four fellows gave me a hand, lugging it near the Cyclops…”(364-376) This has several great examples of Odysseus being a stimulating leader. He gives his men ‘battle talk’ to keep them going when things might get rough and also lends a hand in the act of readying the point and stabbing the Cyclops, Polyphemus. In the act of both rallying his men and being an equal hand to his colleagues, Odysseus shows important aspects of good leadership. Likewise, Odysseus knows, and respects the need for his men where many other self proclaimed leaders would like to save all the glory for themselves and do all their group …show more content…
She rants, “The isolation centers you have promised must be established NOW. And other countries must not let a few states carry the load. Complacency is a worse enemy than the virus”(MSF 1). Not slow in making a point, Liu immediately pushes for what the organization strives to accomplish and shows the quality of hustling a group along so that they can get things done. By eliminating waiting and having everyone else stand by as an option, she offers the quality of urgence; essential in leaders that would like to get anything done. Liu also shows skillful work at being their leader when she says “Complacency is a worse enemy than the virus” because of its wittiness in purpose. She is picking at the groups who could be building hospitals—rather than standing around—but also rallying her group and encouraging them that the virus is containable, no matter how stark the situation may
The I Wor Kuen utilized media in order to motivate and educate members by screening movies regarding domestic issues and the Chinese Revolution. Furthermore, they promoted revolutionary and Maoist propaganda in order to educate members of revolutionary tactics and a realization of the problems occurring in the community. The I Wor Kuen also sought to attack disease by creating a door-to-door tuberculosis campaign and the ensuring proper treatment and free x-ray’s at a municipally held clinic. The organization also created campaigns to end economic exploitation in Chinatown, through the “Streets Belong To the People” demonstration that forced tourist busses off of Chinatown streets. At last, the I Wor Kuen’s efforts to destroy American imperialism translated into their war against major monopolistic organizations in Chinatown itself.
Near the end, Odysseus finds himself in a predicament but perseveres. Although some may argue that Odysseus is not a hero, he should be treated as one due to his leadership and cleverness. Throughout the story, leadership was expressed as a trait for Odysseus. Odysseus showed the characteristics of a leader when he “Carved a massive cake of beeswax into bits and rolled them into my hands until they softened.
Webster Dictionary defines leadership as simply, “providing direction or guidance,” but to be a successful leader one must focus on completing a goal in a way that is beneficial for the majority, not only the one in charge. This can be achieved by utilitarianism, which is doing of what is best for the most number of people, and carrying out actions that lead to positive effects, instead of merely being done with good intentions. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is not an exemplary leader because he went against utilitarianism by not being honest with his men, letting his arrogance control his behavior, and by killing many people in his house without a fair trial. Firstly, a leader must be truthful with those he works with in order for no errors or confusion to occur as a result of information being hidden. In The Odyssey, not being truthful lead to negative consequences for everyone on Odysseus’ ship, and thus contradicted the principle of utilitarianism stating that actions must lead to positive effects.
“Her actions remind me that, even under unbearable circumstances, one can still believe in justice,” in David Henry Hwang’s foreword, in Ji-Li Jiang’s memoir Red Scarf Girl, commemorated even during the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution anyone can overcome adversity (9). Ji-Li Jiang was a young teenager at the beginning of the Cultural Revolution, and living through a very political time in China’s history made Ji-Li into the person she is today. Ji-Li’s intelligence, her choices, and family devotion made her into the headstrong and successful person she is today. Even when Ji-li thought she was unintelligent, others saw she was wise. There were many moments when Ji-Li was reminded she was very smart.
A great leader views the world like he is looking through 3D glasses, always seeing the depth and vibrancy of the possibilities around him. A bad leader is like a cyclops wearing an eyepatch, never able to see his mighty hand in front of his own face. In The Odyssey, Homer illustrates the journey home to Ithaca taken by Odysseus and his men. Unfortunately, Odysseus makes poor choices throughout his travels and his actions often do more harm than good. Two character traits define Odysseus and shape his poor leadership style.
loy·al·ty ˈloiəltē/ noun the quality of being loyal to someone or something. a strong feeling of support or allegiance. Loyalty is very strong and very meaningful, like true love or brotherhood. Loyalty has to be earned, not just given away. In The Odyssey, the epic poem by Homer, Odysseus’ crew is steadfastly loyal to him and follow nearly his every direction, even though they are given many reasons not to be.
Bravery, cleverness, and determination are three traits a good leader has. In Homer’s epic “The Odyssey,” Odysseus, the hero in the story, is trying to return home to Ithaca after his victory in Troy. On their way back home, Odysseus and his men hurt the cyclops, Polyphemus, and angered his father, Poseidon. With a god angry at them, Odysseus and his men had to overcome many obstacles. These obstacles led them to strange islands that had goddesses and dangerous creatures.
Being a leader is a complex role that is easy to mess up. Time and time again he endangers his crew up until their demise. Constantly Odysseus is shown to be brash and controlled via his emotions in moments of danger. Even after he begins to lose more and more men he continues to be insanely unremorseful. In the epic poem The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is overall an overrated leader with his biggest flaw being his horrible judgment
This shows Odysseus being a great leader. Another time Odysseus is resourceful is when he saved his men from the siren sounds by plugging their ears with wax. Odysseus showed good leadership because he was protective and prevented the bad sirens from hurting his mens during the trip. This is a good example of Odysseus’s leadership skills. Odysseus proves he is a hero due to his resourcefulness.
Odysseus displays a strong act of leadership by doing whatever it takes to get done. Whether it's fighting Sirens or a cyclops Odysseus does whatever he could to get his men past the obstacle. In the text it states “I carried wax along the line and laid it in their ears.” (Homer 12.
For example, Odysseus gouges the Cyclops eye while the giant is asleep, even though the Cyclopes has murdered multiple of his men moments before. Odysseus displays his courage when he states,”So we seized our stake with its fiery tip and bored it round and round in the giant's eye” (B9 L.433-34). Odysseus throughout the novel stands up for himself and his crew for the right thing. He displays his leadership when he doesn't let others influence his opinions. Some people may think that Odysseus shows off his courage and wisdom to others
Once in a while leaders can get occupied, even the considerable ones, however they must understand that they committed an error and must endure the outcomes. Various leaders lead for the recognition. Odysseus from The Odyssey and Everett from O Brother Where Art Thou were both astonishing leaders and their men admired them. In spite of their likenesses there are a few things that set them apart. Despite the fact that Everett and Odysseus are similar, Everett has better initiative abilities, which at last causes him and his group get to where they have to go.
In The Odyssey Homer makes Odysseus’ journey to his beloved Ithaca excruciating. Odysseus encounters many friends and foes throughout his journey and has to be a leader throughout his experiences. As an example, he encounters Polyphemus and Poseidon, both of whom make his journey mentally and physically painful. Odysseus faces countless scenarios in which he has to save multiple people in those situations. He also encounters the suitors, who are a group of men that try to marry Penelope, when he returns to reclaim his home.
Odysseus is a good leader in that he uses his wits to get his men out of trouble. As Odysseus and his men prepare to face Kharybdis and Skylla, his men are nervous, so Odysseus reminds them “‘Have we never been in danger before this? More fearsome, is it now, than when the kyklopes penned us in his cave? What power we had! Did I not keep my
