Imagine a world where religion did not exist. The way people live their everyday lives would be very different, for example, what people eat and what they choose to wear. Religion plays a main role in not only how people are able to pull themselves out of the darkest places, but also in how people solve world issues. In the book, Life of Pi, the main character Pi faces an intense journey where the only thing he has to comfort him is his faith. In the end, the only thing keeping him alive is his religion and letting it dictate his survival. In the real world, similarly, people decide social and political issues be dictated by their faith and what they are supposed to do according to their religion. For example, in Life of Pi, religion plays a huge role in how Pi is able to survive on the boat. While stranded, Pi practices religious rituals in any way he could, even if he struggled. Pi quotes ¨They brought me comfort, that is certain. But it was hard, oh it was hard. Faith in God is an opening up, a letting go, a deep trust, a free act of love- but sometimes it was hard to love (Martel 262).¨ This shows that even though Pi struggled with keeping faith close in times of struggle, he kept practicing his religion no matter the circumstances. Another quote that shows how closely Pi kept his faith with him in a time of desperation is when Pi prays to his Gods for miracles every day; ¨Now I will turn miracle into routine. The amazing will be seen every day. I will put in all the hard work necessary. Yes, so long as God is with me, I will not die. Amen (Martel 186).¨ This shows that even though Pi is about to die, he uses Faith to pull himself out and keep fighting a tough battle. Religious beliefs also affect the way personal decisions are made in real life. Religion affects every decision one makes, down to what someone wears and eats. For example, in Muslim culture, which is one of the many religions Pi follows in the novel, one rule is that if you follow the religion, you cannot eat pork and must have your head covered in place of worship (Sicard). These simple rules show how individuals let what they believe in making their personal decisions. Another example of someone making personal decisions based on religion is how closely Christians follow The 10 Commandments. The 10 Commandments are laws that Christians closely follow that are said to be written by God himself. In one article titled ¨ Thy Will Be Done: The 10 Commandments And The Christian Life¨, the author quotes that ¨the purpose of the Ten
Religion often times is depicted as a specific institution that follows the teaching of the Bible, Torah, or the Quran. People fail to realize that religion can stand as anything for any particular person depending on their values. These values bring about sacred symbols, object, or systems to
Religion affects the lives of its followers socially. Religion impacts the way people treat others. For example, The Ten Commandments are 10 beneficial laws that were created by God to help us live a better life. These 10 laws were apart of Christianity and Judaism. One of the commandments is, “You shall not covet” (Document 1).
They didn’t know that I was practising Hindu, Christian and Muslim.” (New PDF 58) This illustrates another unique feature and ability that Pi has since he is sort of one of a kind being someone that equally follows 3 religions. These religions were so important to Pi and are what helped keep him sane in his journey, as well as what later would keep
Even though it does not seem like religion is that important to people, it has influenced many major events that have happened throughout
Life of Pi is a movie about Pi, a shipwreck survivor, and his epic journey of discovery and faith. It is based on Yann Martel’s novel with the same name, and the movie, directed by Ang Lee, makes use of magical realism to convey many themes related to life and spirituality. Many significant symbols are also used to showcase the characteristics of magical realism. In particular, water and the carnivorous island were two important symbols that represented the theme of spirituality in Life of Pi.
This quote from Life of Pi in chapter 24 I believe is an example of a literary device called foreshadowing. In this quote spoken by Pi, it is able to describe the events to come in the novel. It deals with the truth and his imagination. However it is up to the reader to decide what is truly certain and what is made up from his imagination. It is important to the novel because it relates to religion where the whole theme of the novel is focused on.
The Quest of Pi The Life of Pi a quest with an strong influence of religion that is apparent throughout the story. “We are all born like Catholics, aren't we--in limbo without religion, until some figure introduces us to god” (Martel 58). Piscine Molitor Patel a young Indian teen has a unique infatuation with religion. Yann Martel, the author of Life of Pi, Gave Pi or Piscine an interesting life that is different from others.
One is so that he can quickly get to part two of the book, which is the interesting part, and to dismiss confusion among the readers. Religion has been talked about since the early pages, and it seems very important to Pi, the plot, and theme. “In time, my religious doings went from the notice of those to whom it didn 't matter and only amused, to that of those to whom it did matter - and they were not amused.” (THE LIFE OF PI, 2001, p.37). However as soon as the story reaches around page 50, the importance and talk of religion has basically flourished.
When Pi was put in a situation when he needed to survive, he had to change how he saw religion. In his
Religion also affects the inner workings of a society. However, religion has evolved with time. In earlier societies, only one religion was usually allowed and accepted. In Salem Massachusetts during the Witch Trials, every citizen had to be seen as a good Christian. In this case, religion determined whether or not a person was good and trustworthy.
With the combination of magical realistic events and Pi’s religious beliefs, Pi along with the reader a contemplates life’s concepts. From the very beginning, Pi makes his love and yearning for religion clear. As Life of Pi progresses, the protagonist picks up multiple religions as he travels through the novel. With the addition of first Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity, Pi gains attention from leaders and priests of these faiths. Conflict commences with the religious leaders of these individual faiths.
He is unable to understand why the Lord isn’t listening to his prayers and why everything is detrimental to him. Keeping his religious beliefs at sea is very challenging for Pi, this leads him to experience feelings of disbelief towards God. Despite his doubts, Pi continues to pray and practice his religions. He eventually comes to the conclusion that once everything is taken away from him and he is in complete darkness, he will always have his faith. He admits that loving God is difficult, but it’s something he must do if he is to survive his journey across the ocean.
Yann Martel 's, Life of Pi, shows the many miracles of god by giving Pi many relations to him during the 227 days that he is lost at sea and still giving him the happy ending that he receives. The book makes many references to a couple different religions. Christianity being one the religions mentioned. When mentioned it is noticeable that Pi had relations to Jesus and Christianity before, during, and even after his time at sea. Some of these relations helped him survive and keep going all that time.
Religion has major impact on the morality of everyone, even if that religious belief is no belief at all, that
