Authors are known to use a multitudinous amount of literary devices in their works of literature. Literary devices are used to deliver a deeper meaning than what is shown on the page. One of the most common literary devices used by authors is symbolism. Symbolism is the use of symbols such as an object, person, or action to portray different meanings. In Robert Lipsyte’s book, The Contender, some of the symbols he uses to show the theme is the movies, the cave, and the stairs. Alfred and his friend James would always go to the movies together. “If only James had come to the movies tonight, like every other Friday night…”(15). James goes with Major, Hollis, and Sonny to go rob Epsteins’ Grocery Store and he gets caught. The movies symbolize

These two groundbreaking authors use symbolism to show us friendship, trust, and dehumanization. In Night, Eliezer and his father are trying to survive the cataclysm that occurred to the Jewish population and the others in the camp. There were multiple examples of symbolism.
Tim O'Brian and Kurt Vonnegut are prime examples of great authors that use these, and each of them use them in different ways. In the Lake of the Woods by O’Brian has several literary devices, as does Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five. In each of these novels, symbolism, irony, character change, and foreshadowing are present, but all are used more effectively in Slaughterhouse Five. Symbolism is the first
Throughout history, multiple religions have budded heads, such as Christians and Muslims. In the book “The Chosen,” by Chaim Potok, the Hasidic and Modern Orthodox people conflict with each other because of their different views of belief. The religion itself doesn’t conflict, but the people of the different religions do. Hasidic and Modern Orthodox are the two sects of the main characters which were divided off from the four sects of Judaism, which are, Reconstructions, Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox. Both religions are “types” of Jews; both of these are stricter than the “average Jew,” but Hasidism’s are considered the extreme.

Symbolism is one of the most important properties a story can have. It's often used to develop a character or a theme throughout the story that is being told. Symbolism in literature is best described by as the use of symbols and objects to signify ideas and qualities by giving them a symbolic meanings that are very different from their literal sense. The short stories "Where are you going, Where have you been?" and "The Yellow Wallpaper" have very obvious examples of symbolism.
Symbolism allows the author to create a story that would otherwise be bland and monotone. Without this dark romantic element, books, short stories, and poems would not have as much meaning nor appealing detail. Symbolism in "The Raven," "The Devil and Tom Walker," and "The Minister's Black Veil," creates layers of meaning and interesting characters. Symbolism has been used for centuries to spice up the literary world. Sometimes it is used in obvious ways, but other time it has to be thoroughly studied to be imperturbably understood.

He explains the struggles using the literary concepts of symbols, theme, and metaphors to expand the reader’s understanding or the text. Symbol is an object representing something else. It is a concept or idea that uses something else to show it.
When an author uses symbolism, a dove can symbolize peace, and a black bird can be the picture of death. Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities in a story through motions, words and objects. It evokes a spark in the reader to give them an opportunity to get an insight of the writer’s mind and how they view the world. Symbolism works together with other writing tools to create a deeper meaning in a story like Sonny’s Blues by James Baldwin. Baldwin created a big picture with little symbols that he worked in throughout his story.
Symbolism can use an object (like a tree of birds), or art, (like Melinda’s art project or Mr. Freeman's canvas) to represent an abstract idea. Laurie Halse Anderson uses symbolism to hint at a certain mood or emotion, rather than just blatantly saying it. So, the use of symbolism is important because it helps create meaning and emotion in a story. Symbolism makes a book fun to read, the symbolism produces a thought provoking work of art and it, (like in this book), adds meaning to seemingly unrelated objects and elicits emotions in the

When we read, we want to truly enjoy what is written we need to become a part of the story. And literary devices help us to better see and feel the storyline. A good storyline captures all of our senses, these devices draw the reader in, paint a picture, heighten the senses, and pull at us emotionally. Throughout Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story The Birthmark, some of the key literary devices used were irony symbol and theme.
A literary symbol is usually defined as something to signify ideas and/or meaning by giving a symbolic meaning, contradicting or being different from the literal meaning. Usually these types of symbols are used to develop a more deep, and significant meaning. Just as a cathedral's literal meaning is to offer a place for the religious to worship, the narrator’s drawing of a cathedral has opened a door for him into a deeper place in his own world where he can see beyond what is immediately visible to him; Breaking free from the monotony of his every day life, and what he lacks to see and embrace because of
“Symbolism is the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense.” Symbols can add a deeper meaning than just an object itself that the author is trying to make. Symbols can also foreshadow what is yet to come. The audience can interpret a symbol in many ways it depends on their experience. In Southside Chicago the Younger family is struggling to have hope as they are always facing society.
Symbolism in general is the building blocks to all sources of literature and can shape a piece of writing in many ways. Symbols in general can portray what something or someone represents, giving a deeper and metaphorical meaning to a symbol. Symbolism is often used within poetry, literature, music, or even art. This is how an author conveys a different meaning to the audience. For example artists may use the color “red” not only because of the color theory, but to convey love, passion, and maybe even health.
