Lizzie Andrew Borden was an American woman who was absolve from a double murder in 1892, at the age of 22 (Carlisle,1992). Lizzie Borden parents were; Andrew Jackson and Sarah Border, unfortunately, Borden’s mother died when she gave birth to her. Lizzie Borden’s father was a wealthy property developer and the head of one of the largest banks, making him disfavored amongst the community. (TheFamousPeople.com, 2017). Border had a religious upbringing and would attend Sunday school church. Lizzie Bordern, was also involved in contemporary social movements such as the Women’s Christian Temperance Union (TheFamousPeople.com, 2017). Borden and her stepmother did not interact often and it is said that Borden would refer to her as “Mrs. Borden” …show more content…
In July 1892 there was a family argument (no records of what was said in this argument exist) in which Lizzie Borden and her sister, Emma, had to take vacations away. On the morning of August 4, 1892, Borden allegedly stabbed her step mother in her skull repeatedly, on the second floor of their house (TheFamousPeople.com, 2017). Couple minutes later as her father was resting in the living room she approached him and stabbed him about 11 times (TheFamousPeople.com, 2017). The same day of the murder, Lizzie Borden was found burning a dress outside of her house (Linder 1995). Seven days later she was arrested and put on trial for both murders (TheFamousPeople.com, 2017). While in custody she could not repeat the same story about her whereabouts, making her even more suspicious (Linder 1995). Given that Lizzie Borden did not have a lawyer at the time of testimony it was not admissible in court (Linder 1995). The police speculated that the murder had to be someone from the house and since Lizzie Borden’s sister was out of town the blame fell on her (Linder 1995). During the trial the police did not find any evidence against Lizzie Borden therefore, just after one hour of deliberations the jury decided that she was not guilty (Linder …show more content…
Bipolar disorder causes mood swings, affects energy levels, and impulsive behaviors (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). There are several accounts that Lizzie Borden did not get along with her stepmother even though she raise her, other accounts mention that they would always be cordial with each other. After some tension in the family, Lizzie Borden’s impulsivity may have led her into killing her father and stepmother. Lizzie Borden also showed signs of antisocial personality disorder. Symptoms include; persistent lying, manipulation, and lack of empathy (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). At the time of the trial, Lizzie Borden, changed her story multiple times, she was inconsistent. Borden also had a history of stealing from her stepmother and would often blame someone else (Hartselle, 2013). During the trial she showed no emotion about her parents having been murdered (Hartselle,
Nobody believe her that she was the killer. Most of the court room judge was all male. So, they didn’t believe that a woman could be able to kill her own family. She was guilty and wasn’t put in jail without any prove that she killed them.
In the trial a lot of evidence came out against Lizzie, like how Lizzie was caught burning her brand new blue dress which supposedly had “ red paint stains “ on it, how she attempted to purchase poison the day before the murder, and how only the hatchet head was found after Lizzie used it the day before. (www.bio.com) From this evidence it seems to be clear Lizzie had been planning to kill her parents and was trying to cover it up. For instance, there was plenty of exiting family conflict such as, Lizzie and Abby always arguing and Lizzie getting angry with her father because of money. Family conflict was a big motive in the trial.
color...put the URL below your paraphrased note. During the time of the murder women were considered weak and never had there been a murder where a woman is the suspect. This is why her story became so well known. As for the lack of forensic science in this day and age Lizzie was never proven to be the killer and to this day almost 120 years later she’s still not proven guilty.
Lizzie Borden is innocent. To begin with, throughout the testimonies almost every single one that was near Lizzie after the incident. Even though differently worded stated that there was no blood spotted on her at all they even added onto that claiming her
Other family members could be guilty of the crime, not just Lizzie. The first possible suspect that comes to mind is John Morse, Lizzie’s uncle who, after supposedly being made aware of the horrible murders, is said to have “ambled” into the back yard and proceeded to “eat pears in the shade” (King 27). The next possible suspect would have to be Emma, who, being out of town that day was sent a telegram telling her about the murders, but she “did not catch the next train,” or the next, in fact she did not “return” home “until after seven that night” (King 27). Doesn't that seem a little odd, seeing as her father was just killed; unless she had something to do with it and couldn’t get home until then, but we will never know. Another possible suspect is Bridget Sullivan, the maid who happened to be in and around the house at the time of the murders (“The Lizzie Borden Story”).
I read through all the witness testimonies and Lizzie Borden is guilty let me tell you why. All these testimonies mentioned something that made her look guilty. here’s why, she changed the story way too much, Lizzie Borden burned a really big piece of evidence, she also could have been jealous of her stepmother because her father bought her stepmother Abby Borden a house. Lizzie Borden seems to change her answers a lot in the very last document. Let me explain to you why she is guilty.
Is Lizzie Andrew Borden Guilty? I have a very simple answer, yet rather a complex answer to that. Most people in this day an age believe that she was guilty. Now, why out of everyone in the town of Fall River would you choose this poor innocent lady who supposedly loved her parents so much that she hacked her mother 18 times and her father 11. She brutally and viciously murdered her own parents in all under 2 hours.
There are also many books, articles, and newspaper articles that date back to the time the murders happened. Lizzie did not like her stepmother at all, but felt differently about her father. Andrew Borden was on bad terms with a man when he was murdered and many people may have wanted him dead due to his wealthiness, attitude, and sketchy business deals. Lizzie claimed to be in the barn eating fruit for thirty minutes while the murder happened, even though the reports say she was locked inside with her stepmother, Abigail Borden. Lizzie’s parents had no reason to die and didn’t deserve to die, but Lizzie thought very
So the confused answers that she gave may not have been because she was guilty, but because she was in shock. Although police at the time were to aware of this so when she was not able to give a convincing story and her stories continued to change, Lizzie became the prime suspect in her parents murder. Due to the fact that she could not keep her story straight and her distressed state led to her arrest. Two days after she was questioned about the murders, Police Chief Hilliard arrested Lizzie. The next day she pleaded “Not Guilty” to her charges and then was transported to a rail car to be taking to the jail in Taunton, which is eight miles from her hometown.
Lizzie and her parents had a strong, devoted, and long-standing relationship, making a motive for murder unlikely. There is no incriminating evidence such as blood found on Lizzie. In addition, other possible suspects
Have you ever done something against the law and got away with it. Well if you have, it probably wasn’t as bad as what Lizzie Borden got away with. Lizzie Borden got away with killing her father and her step mother. I strongly believe that Lizzie Borden killed her father and stepmother. The reasons I believe Lizzie Borden is guilty is because she was seen trying to buy a prussic acid which is a poison a couple days before her parents murder, once her parents bodies were found she sent the people who came to help off to do errands, and 4 days after the murders she burned a dress she claims was ruined from paint stains.
In addition, after the trial she showed bad behavior. Lizzie Borden was accused of shoplifting in 1897 (Biography.com Editors, 2014).In her case everyone she knew turned against her and tried to get her in trouble for everything they could. In addition, after many trials and long investigations and tons of evidence Lizzie Borden got away with the murders of her
In Lizzie Borden: Murderess or Media Sensation it states that “There was no physical evidence linking her to the murders” There was no evidence that she did the murders. They didn't question anybody but Lizzie. Anyone could have done it. This just proves that Lizzie did not do
The Life of Sojourner Truth: An Abolitionist Sojourner Truth, whose original name was Isabella Baumfree, was born in Upstate New York in around 1797. In that day, the birthdays of children born into slavery were not kept track of, so the exact date of Isabella’s birth is not known. She grew up in a slave family with 11 siblings. In 1843, Isabella Baumfree changed her name to Sojourner Truth.
During the trials, even some active accusers and the magistrate were doubtful of her accusations because of her respectable reputation (Linder). Moreover, Rebecca was innocent because she never confessed to her accusation and responded, “I am innocent and God will clear my innocency” (Ray). Also, the first jury’s verdict on her of “Not Guilty” and the probation granted by Governor Phips that proved her innocence were purposely overturned by her rivals and accusers (Ray). In
