Macaroni and Cheese: Making America Grate Again Imagine being a child and coming inside from an exhausting day at the park and catching a mouthwatering whiff of lunch being made, only to find out it is a child’s ultimate dream meal—macaroni and cheese. That being said, mac and cheese is not only loved by children, it is loved by a great deal of people. Therefore, more of the world’s population should further their knowledge about the delightful food, such as, where it came from, the emergence of Kraft (the most popular brand), and the interesting influences that it has on people.

Apparently, Crayola was moved by the cheesy deliciousness because in 1933, the company named a crayon “macaroni and cheese.” Additionally, there are two restaurants in New York City by the names of S’MAC and Supermac that are devoted to serving macaroni and cheese. Former college student at the University of Connecticut, Luke Gatti, even got expelled because he wanted macaroni and cheese so badly. He was charged with breach of peace in second degree criminal trespassing for calling a cafeteria employee names and physically assaulting him when he refused the serve the rowdy student mac and cheese. The life pursued by the average young person in America is fast paced and scheduled to the point of breaking. As time has progressed this time stretched life style has impacted the need for food that isn’t cooked at home or even at restaurants that cook with traditional methods. This coupled with the swelling number of households with either a single parent or two working parents has increased the reliance on the fast food industry and in turn increased the overweight and obesity rates in the country. In his article “Don’t Blame the Eater,” David Zinczenko addresses this topic and places the blame not on those partaking in these delectable dinners, but in the hands of the fast food industry and their lack of understandable labeling. Zinczenko’s argument is valid and strong due to his equal use of ethos, logos and pathos.

But the real cost of eating fast food never appears on the menu.” When the idea of fast food was first created, it was met with mixed reactions. Relevance between Food and Humans with Rhetorical Analysis In the modern industrial society, being aware of what the food we eat come from is an essential step of preventing the “national eating disorder”. In Michael Pollan’s Omnivore’s Dilemma, he identifies the humans as omnivores who eat almost everything, which has been developed into a dominant part of mainstream unhealthiness, gradually causing the severe eating disorder consequences among people. Pollan offers his opinion that throughout the process of the natural history of foods, deciding “what should we have for dinner” can stir the anxiety for people based on considering foods’ quality, taste, price, nutrition, and so on.
The main contributor, widely reported by top experts, is the consumption of cheap, and convenient foods such as fast food and the myriad of boxed foods available in the supermarket. Diane Brady asserts in her essay, “The Employer-Friendly Case for Pricer Big Macs” that “Of all the reasons why a third of U.S. adults are obese, the lure of cheap, unhealthy food ranks near the top” (519). With continual attention being given to the effects of unhealthy foods on adults and especially young people, one would think that America would wise up and stop consuming it at such an alarming rate. Again, Brady points out that, “Fast food chains have raised their game with healthier menu offerings and support for programs that encourage physical activity, but they continue to thrive by selling high-calorie food. McDonald’s salads, introduced in 1987, make up just 2 percent to 3 percent of U.S. sales” (520).

Today McDonald’s has many more competitors such as; Carl’s Jr., Sonic, Chick-Fil-A and Burger King, which now provides kid’s meals with toys. Parents are infuriated by the fact that the free toy is making their children want the unhealthy food, yet they feel obligated to buy the meal to make their child happy. Though these children are still more interested in the popular the toy and will beg their parents to buy the meal from the fast food industry. Nevertheless many parents have stood up against the toys in their child’s meal. In Santa Clara, California there has been a banment of toys in children's meals.
Most humans do not think of the consequence that processed foods have on our bodies. The big name food producers have manipulated the youth by offering products that go along with their favorite television show. The farming aspect of food production is horrible. The animals are treated very poorly. The process of slaughter is unsafe and very unsanitary.
In Russel Baker's essay, "The Art of Eating Spaghetti", he was trying to express that what you end up doing shouldn't be determined by how hard it will be, but instead by if you want to do it or not. He says that he felt that he wanted to be writer, but knew that it kids didn't just graduate and be a writer. At the end, he says, "Writing couldn't lead to a job after high school, and it was hardly honest work, but Mr. Fleagle had opened a door for me." The most effect part of his essay was when he wrote about how proud he felt when Mr. Fleagle was reading his essay out loud and everyone was listening and laughing, because it's what he would feel when people read his future stories as a writer.

Before starting that large process I firstly will explain what the social imagination is and what the key points of the imagination are in able to fully understand the topic; food and its history, biography, and the relation it has in society. This is my first assignment for the module understanding contemporary society so please bear with me as I will do my best to explain it in a logic manner so everybody can understand it.
Don’t even get me started on the American food industry! The american food industry is one of the only food industries in the whole wide world that favors money over the health of its citizens. The food that most Americans eat is processed crap, if you can even call it food! How many of you have eaten popcorn, chips, candy, or crackers in the last week? The amount of chemicals in the food we eat as a country on a daily basis is freaking ridiculous.
