When the topic of volunteering would be mentioned upon me and my peers, we would most likely change the subject or disperse. Volunteering is something that is rising in our generation, yet is hidden in the shadows at the same time. In Kent Ansen’s essay, “Should the United States Establish Mandatory Public Service for Young Adults?” the author tells the audience why public service should be mandatory. I believe that volunteering is an amazing subject that comes with unbelievable benefits to the person and the environment that is affected by the, but at the same time, should not be mandatory for everyone. In my lifetime, I have had multiple times of public service. I worked at my church, cleaning all of the seats, vacuuming, and washing the …show more content…
Time is very crucial to a young adult’s life, and is spent on various subjects from school to family. Students in high school and college barely have time to spend freely and struggle to complete work on a constant daily basis. If a mandatory assigned public service were assigned to the person at a certain time, this would most likely conflict with their schedule. In the Pendulum article I read, the writer has his take on mandatory public service: “However, I don’t feel mandatory service is necessary. As soon as I graduate college, I want to get out in the world and start working” (Pendulum, 2005, para. 6). Volunteer work is unpaid, and as described here, would take away from the time a person is using to work or figure their life out. The most valuable times of a person’s life could be messed with by this mandatory period of volunteer time. Also, if a drafting system would be instituted with the public, people could be randomly chosen. This means that everybody from the impoverished to the prosperous could be picked. Lots of people have health issues and problems as well so that would most likely have numerous conflicts along with it. With all of these problems, the authorities would most likely have a heap of trouble along with …show more content…
One may observe what it has done to the shaken people of prison, for example. The men and ladies in that establishment have time to reflect and without free lives of their own. With this comes life lessons, and they can be learned through the work given to them during the time that they serve. I guarantee that this work such as picking up trash on the highway has made the majority of the imprisoned reflect on their past actions. Mandatory volunteering can have awful aspects too because people may not always enjoy it while some do. The mandatory public service could also make the prisoners furious or depressed too, proving that it is not always good for everyone. On the other hand, life without mandatory volunteering has many differences. The people who choose not to volunteer can choose to be lazy a lot of the time, which can lead to negative effects. These can include playing video games, napping, or wasting time another way, and none of these lead to positive things for society. There is also another side to those who don’t have mandatory volunteering, with the people who just simply volunteer. These people get a plethora of experiences, such as the ones I mentioned earlier. As one can see, volunteering has many different viewpoints depending on where the person
For my service leaning assignment, I volunteered at the Conroe Cajun Catfish Festival in support of the Montgomery County Food Bank receiving donations at the festival entrance. In volunteering at the event, I learned the differences in service learning, volunteerism and community service and will provide details in what I learned a about each. I will also provide details and examples of teamwork, communication and networking experiences gained while at the event. A brief overview of the Montgomery County Food bank will also be provided with information on the assignment task, measurable success and interaction with fellow students and organization directors.
I’m glad that you broke down on what sympathy and empathy are, there are a lot of people who get these two mixed up. But as humans we will always have sympathy for others, but for most of us we will never know how to empathize with others. Having both of them are great to have in the Human Service field but we cannot let it consume us, we were called upon to help them in the best we can for them. But you make great points in the scriptures that you use, every day I wake up and tell myself to become more like God. In the Human Services field we are there to improve the situations of others, and to be able to help them when they cannot help themselves anymore.
“It is therefore vital that we encourage our youth to become involved through federal incentives or even at the idea of personal growth.” (Ryan 2012). By encouraging students to do complete community service the students are urged to go out into the community, socialize and possibly form new relationships. This will help students form leadership skills, much better, active citizen and as well as giving them a feeling of having done something positive. A quote from FLA Board member helps to explain why FLA chose to make community service a requirement, “The community service requirement at Falls Lake gives students a chance to understand the importance of helping others.
In Cicero’s On Duties, Cicero conveys his message through an epistolary format, pathos, and inductive reasoning (rhetorical advice) by showing the audience how a man’s duties are to be conducted with moral guidance and supreme goodness. Cicero writes On Duties in an epistolary format; in other words, he writes it in a letter. There are historical and family implications to his message. First, there was a major civil war going on after the assassination of Julius Caesar. Cicero, a supporter of the Roman Republic, was constantly persecuted by political enemies, such as Mark Antony.
Volunteer’s dilemma consists of a person having to volunteer to do something that will benefit everyone and it does not matter who that someone is. However, if no one volunteers than everybody is in trouble. As famously seen when nobody volunteered to call the police in the 1964 murder case of Catherine Genovese when 38 people either saw of knew what was happening to her, in this instance, nobody volunteered and the outcome was the death of a young woman (Poundstone pg. 201-203). One of the reasons why nobody called or helped is because they thought someone else was going to
The volunteers are similar to the volunteers I work with every day at City Year. Everyone comes from different states and different cultures, but we are all share the same purpose. That purpose is to bridge the gap in the education
One of the many actions that keep our nation going, that is often overlooked, is community service. Often times community service is required in school and in jobs encouraging people to be excited to help out. Other times, people
10. Says: The author feels as though, by turning their junior year into a year where they are doing community service work may help out with their academic hours in their schedules. Does: According to Eggers, he supports his claim with reasonable suggestions. Para. 11.
The first benefit would be finding peoples inner self. People who volunteer find a sense of empowerment within themselves. They feel like they are making a difference little by little. They improve and teach themselves in the process also (Borus 19). Another characteristic that they find is self confidence.
Instead of laborious household chores consuming your day, they can be finished with no inconvenience involved, leaving little active tasks left to do with the free time that you have. Our ancestors were not given the opportunity to involve these short cuts in their lives. Hence the reason for the difference in the world today verses years ago. Mandatory public service could very well provide our world with better social skills, a decrease in obesity, and an increase in community likeliness.
The quality of work is just going to go down the drain because, now people feel as if they have no choice so it's more of a "lets just get it over with already" type of situation. So that's why i feel as if we shouldn't inforce volunteer work and make it to where people are obligated to do it. Because America is already so great that we have so many, kind hearted people who will do it out of the kindess of their hearts, and not because they have
Often in life, we come across situations that may stretch us and challenge us, finding ourselves forced to get out of our comfort zone. Volunteering is definitely not for everyone, people may not have the adequate time, confidence, knowledge. But that does not mean you avoid the situation at all times, you must allow yourself to step out of your comfort zone and experience things that you would never think about doing. On the first week of volunteering it was a bit intense for me, as I found it difficult and little bit sad to watch the women living the way they do, for some reason I felt that they were always missing their children and grandchildren. Some of the residents did not even have family so they never got visitations.
To some, they are inspiring, capable, and revolutionary young adults, but to the rest of the world, they are the lazy, unmotivated, and an apathetic group known as teenagers. Almost all teens are defined by these standards and are thought to behave as so. However, is this really the case? Although there are many teens that fit this description, there are many more that, contrary to popular belief, are far from this depiction. Many teens are active in various organizations, volunteer in the community around them, and are determined to accomplish all that they can.
The primary aim of mandatory volunteering is to encourage teenagers to be decent and caring citizens. By this way, high school students are to complete 30 to 40 hours unpaid service in their communities in order to graduate. Some people claim that having mandatory volunteering in the school program is extracurricular and affects students’ activity in the class. However, I strongly believe that it would be beneficial for their future states in a number of ways. First reason that I believe mandatory volunteering is beneficial is that it involves a great number of people from young age to serve in community.
Lifelong Benefits Volunteer projects have been put in place to benefit those in need, but those who receive the help provided are not the only ones who benefit. Volunteer projects provide both age specific and universal benefits. Older adults may receive more benefits pertaining to their health, whereas teenagers expand their social skills and learn to be more respectful. All age groups are able to give back to others and receive the positive effects associated with their service. Since volunteering can provide benefits to both those who volunteer and those who receive the help, volunteer projects encourage citizens to continue to give back to others.
