Required Immunity Mandatory vaccinations for children in public schools have been the center of much debate since laws were first developed to regulate immunization. Fears from parents about side effects and adverse reactions have steered many away from wanting to vaccinate their children despite the numerous infectious diseases they prevent. These debates have gotten in the way of progression in schools for preventing the spread of disease. To me, the risks of not vaccinating children are far greater than the risks of adverse reactions. Parents who don’t vaccinate their children put them and others at risk because it allows normally preventable disease to continue to spread. Vaccinations have been around since 1796 and have since helped …show more content…
For example, some parents are reluctant to vaccinate their children against diseases like Hemophilic Influenza if they won’t be attending daycare. While daycares require this vaccine, this deadly disease is a threat to all children, even if they do not attend daycare (Bronfin 3). People who oppose mandatory vaccinations for public school children point out parents concerned with their children being around unvaccinated children could move their child to a private institution requiring immunization (Murphy 2). This reasoning would only add extra stress for families trying to find schools for their children and could cost parents more money than just being able to send their child to a free public school without fear. The next most controversial concern parents have regards the ingredients in some vaccinations. Thimerosal is an ingredient in influenza shots and is rumored to cause brain damage. This rumor was made popular by internet forums but the truth is, there is no evidence this chemical causes illness in humans and babies who are strictly breastfed come into contact with much greater amounts of thimerosal than are in vaccinations. Some chemicals used can be dangerous in large amounts, but are not harmful in the small amounts present in vaccinations (Bronfin
The vaccinating can cause brain damage and SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) II. Personal belief A. Vaccines are substances
Before I started this course I had only put minimal thought as to what our rights were in choosing to be vaccinated or not. From what I gathered from being a child and knowing what my nephews are required to have, it was my belief was that vaccinations are a mandated requirement and there was no getting around it. If parents wanted their child to be enrolled in day care, play in little league or just to attend school, it was a requirement to have physicals and for children to be vaccinated. I don’t have any children of my own and because of that I rarely had put any thought as to the number of vaccinations a child must have before the age of four until they reach adulthood. Though not having children does negate my sympathies towards parents’ concerns
Parents built their arguments against immunization on the strength of the naturally acquired immune system. Childhood diseases were not perceived as a threat but as part of the natural way to reinforce the body. Parents understood immunization as an artificial intrusion into the natural development of the immune system. Other parents believe they should be able to make health care decisions for their child on their own terms. They view it as a loss of freedom to not dictate what is injected into their children’s bodies.
However, no reports of the use of Thimerosal in vaccines for children under 6 years since the year 2554 onwards, and with influenza vaccine for older children and adults with low or no amounts of thimerosal. Conclusion: That's why the family of U.S did not want their children vaccinated because they believed too much and concerns about disadvantage, vaccines have side effects, vaccines cause autism, and the preservatives in vaccines are dangerous. In the other hand, vaccination has its own advantages is when a child has been vaccinated, the disease is not contagious to other children. Therefore, vaccination thus enhancing substances special for children.
News Flash! Recent outbreaks of what the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) call vaccine-preventable diseases demonstrate the effects of the anti-vaccination movement. “Antivaxxers” as they’ve come to be called, as noticed on this author's Facebook page, are a population of parents who make a conscious decision not to vaccinate their children. The goal of this paper is to shed some light on the Antivaxxers, their arguments for choosing not to vaccinate their children, and research that proves the Antivaxxers’ theories are wrong. After all, vaccines aren’t something to be concerned about, they are proven to be effective.
Parents and guardians believe myths and Facebook posts instead of well educated doctors to determine if their child should be vaccinated. This is a huge mistake! By not vaccinating your children properly you are not only putting them at risk, but the people around them that they encounter daily (CDC). Parents should not be able to make up an uneducated excuse to keep their children from being properly vaccinated. Immunizations need to be completely required for students to attend a public school in order to keep their local community disease
Vaccination or inoculation, despite its short history in the medical field, considers as one of the best ways to enhance the immune system and protect from a lot of deadly diseases. For example, it has decrease the number of hospitalized kids of acute gastroenteritis to 45% (Weinberg and Szilagyi, 2010). Among all other medical approaches, vaccine has the lowest side effects which makes it safer (Satcher, 1999). Thus, in all U.S’s 50 states, vaccination is mandatory for kids to be accepted in public school. The heath rate had become better since then and kids get vaccinated from time to time depends on the “disease of the year” However, since the vaccine law require a medical and/or agreement from the parents to vaccinate their children some
Federal Law does not require children to be vaccinated, but it is up to the states to decide if children must be vaccinated in order for a child to enroll at school. Diekema states that, “All but two states allow... personal belief exemption from school vaccination requirements.” Most states offer a personal belief exemption which allows parents to enroll their children in school without getting them vaccinated. Not getting children vaccinated poses as a danger to the other students if one child who has not been vaccinated gets a contagious disease. Vaccinations have had an impact in preventing infectious
As disease outbreaks began in 1850, such as smallpox, public schools made it mandatory that a child enrolling had to have all the required vaccines. Since the requirements were enforced, many parents did not believe that it should be the
To Vaccinate or Not To Vaccinate A common issue that has caused much controversy in America is immunization. Vaccine safety is constantly debated in today’s media. Various topics that have been given attention lately are the connections between autism and certain vaccines, the legal requirements for vaccines in some states, and other interests. Although “vaccines face a tougher safety standard than most pharmaceutical products,” researchers and concerned parents continue to challenge the claims of certain medical personnel that immunizations are safe (Kwok 436).
America is built on the backbone of freedom so it is not a surprise that the government does not infringe on such rights as the 1st Amendment. However, this “freedom” is causing black lash as other claims that it is dangering the rest of the population as experts in the American Academy of Pediatrics explain that “Parents who refuse immunization on behalf of their children are, in a sense, free riders who take advantage of the benefit created by the participation and assumption of immunization risk or burden by others while refusing to participate in the program themselves” (Stoker). The anti-vaccine parents believe that “as the proportion of the population that is vaccinated grows, the individual benefits of vaccination decline,
“Together, since 1986, they have pushed up the average cost to fully vaccinate a child with private insurance to the age of 18 to $2,192 from $100, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention” (“Vaccine Costs Soaring”). This is an excessive amount of money, but in most cases insurance covers the cost of vaccinations because they are so important for the human body. If people are concerned about the price of something that can save a child’s life; then they have the wrong
ABSTRACT Vaccination is an artificial method of creating immunization to certain disease. Although vaccines are assumed safe, they have been associated with numerous health hazards. The National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program compensates people injured by vaccines. Under the new law which is going into effect July 1, 2016, children are banned from private and public school unless they meet the vaccination requirements. Some uncommon facts regarding vaccines are presented.
If I was a parent, I would desire that a public health department would enforce that all children should vaccinated before they attend school; even though, there still are some parents that do not believe in vaccinations. I would like to expect that my child would be safe from diseases that are preventable by vaccinating. Childhood vaccinations should require for all American families. There has not been enough truthful evidence that connects vaccinations with autism or any other disease; therefore, why do some parents choose not to vaccinate their children. In Nicholas Kristof’s article “The Dangers of Vaccine Denial,” Dr. Philip J. Landrian writes “that there may be environmental factors linked to autism, but these relate to endocrine disrupting chemical in consumer products, not vaccines” (Kristof’s pp3).
Not all doctors believe in Vaccinations. Dr. Kurt Perkins discusses why not to vaccinate their child. He compares Vaccines and Immunization as he describes “Vaccination is simply injecting something into your body. This does not create immunity for your body. These are 2 totally separate entities.
