The Civil Rights Movement inspired racial harmony between blacks and whites in America. The Movement was led by many leaders and activists. Some of the biggest leaders/activists were Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. They both had different philosophies on how to earn freedom and civil rights. The big question is whose philosophy was better in the 1960s. Martin Luther King believed that blacks and whites should join together as one country, but the only way to achieve that was through nonviolence. Malcolm X believed that blacks and whites should work separately, but have the same rights as one another. He also thought that blacks must achieve that through any means necessary. I believe that Martin Luther King had the better philosophy. He understood that violence wouldn’t fix everything, he was extremely determined, and he wanted the black and white communities to join together as one nation. I believe that MLK had the better philosophy because he understood that while violence may stop the racists for the time being, it will never end racism for good. He believes that violence may kill the person who is committing the crimes, but it won’t stop the crimes from being committed by someone else. In document J, MLK says, “Violence may murder the murderer, but it doesn’t murder the murder.” In document F, MLK says,”Basic …show more content…
He refused to stop fighting for his cause because of the destruction of their buildings and physical attacks. In document D, it states, “We are on the move now. The burning of our churches will not deter us. We are on the move now. The bombing of our homes will not dissuade us.” In document H, it states, “We will meet your physical force with soul force.” My interpretation of the first quote is that MLK would not be stopped by bombs or fires. In the second quote, it means that MLK would fight the violence with speeches and boycotts. Martin Luther King was determined to fight for his beliefs and never give
Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X are very important historical figures. Throughout the Civil Rights Movement they have created two different approaches. The beliefs grew from their childhood. King grew up in a middle class family and was well educated. Malcolm X however, grew up in a deprived atmosphere that was very harsh and he had barely any schooling.
What MLK is saying is that the most effective way of dealing with a problem is nonviolence. In document L it states,”the Negro would face the same unchanged conditions, the same squalor, and deprivation, the only difference being that his bitterness would be
Martin Luther King’s string of peaceful protests against the self-thought superior white race is what earned him the Nobel Peace Prize, Malcolm X spit hot fire against the white man’s oppression on African Americans, stating that they were blocking the path in civil rights progression. Both public figures fought for the same goal of equal treatment and opportunity, but the actions taken by this duo to reach this goal were anything but the same. When you have two ingenious men battling for the same cause, progression is bound to happen, another given is one will stride farther than the other, and in this case that’s exactly what Malcom X did. One of the reasons Malcom X and Martin Luther King were so different has to do with how they grew up,
I agree with Jackie Robinsons method of civil disobedience even though he knows he can never be non-violent. I do not agree with Malcolm X and the nation of Islam approach because it is more violent and aggressive even though they do not want to live together with whites. I believe that the civil rights movement was about making a change for African Americans and the only way to make a change is through nonviolent acts. The civil rights movement was to make a change and Malcolm X and the nation of Islam's approach would have caused more problems than solved any for African Americans. Malcolm X believed that blacks should live separately from white's and he called it separation.
Malcolm X, a Muslim, believed in the power of self-defense and black nationalism. He advocated for the separation of the races and the establishment of a separate black nation. While Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. had different philosophies and approaches to the civil rights movement, they both shared a common goal of achieving equality and justice for Black Americans. They both recognized the injustices of racism and discrimination and worked to bring about social change through nonviolent
Ololade Latinwo In the 1960s, the idea of equal rights for African Americans citizens began to take hold in the United States At the head of this major movement were two major leaders: Martin Luther King Jr. Despite the fact that they had the common goal of racial equality, they had opposing views on how to obtain it. Martin Luther King Jr. believed that Civil Rights should be obtained peacefully, through methods such as boycotts, sit-ins, and marches. While Malcom X believed that such a thing should be obtained at all costs, with violence or otherwise.
Basic to the philosophy of nonviolence is the refusal to cooperate with evil. There is nothing quite so effective as a refusal to cooperate economically with the forces and institutions which perpetuate evil in our communities.” (Martin Luther King Jr’s “Nonviolence: The Only Road to Freedom” Document F) This supports the claim that Martin Luther King Jr didn’t preach violence, only retaliation. By attacking the economy but not attacking people or communities.
The violence is immoral. There were a lot of violence. MLK believed that violence ends by protecting itself. He thinks that Negro cannot win the respect for white people. He believes that people are going to change when he does this.
Martin Luther King Jr.’s civil rights philosophy made more sense for the 1960’s. During the 1960’s the civil rights movement proved prominent. Through the 60’s thousands of leaders rose, but only two emerged above the rest. Those two were known as Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. Both Martin and Malcom were very intelligent men but the two had totally different views on how blacks should go about gaining civil rights. Both proved to be pioneers of the movement, however it was Martins philosophy that reigned supreme.
Malcolm X was an activist and powerful voice of the Black Muslim faith and the Civil Rights Movement. He believed in black separatism, a philosophy that urges Black Americans to cut political, social and economic ties with the white community (X, 1). Unlike Dr. Martin Luther King, Malcolm X did not want African-Americans to cooperate or interact with Caucasians. He strongly believed that violence was the way to defend his people against the Caucasian oppressors. He presents radical ideas, which are influenced by his experience as he faced racial discrimination.
MLK and Malcolm X both wanted equality but in different ways. Martin Luther King believed in nonviolence to end segregation. However, Malcolm X believed in segregation; where African Americans would govern themselves without bothering the whites. But which idea was better for society? Malcolm X’s philosophy offers a variety of solutions for
Philosophical differences between martin luther king and malcolm X The philosophical differences between Martin Luther King and Malcolm X have to do with the their protest strategies. MLK never fought with violence. Although he would get physically attacked, he stood his ground and continued to fight for equality peacefully. King believed that whites and blacks should come together to end the hate and violence.
was a better advocate for the Civil Rights movement because he was more peaceful in his actions. I do feel that both were very important people to bringing equality to this nation. But, MLK’s non-violent approach with handling things was much better in promoting civil justice. He wanted all groups of people to come together as one. Malcolm X wanted every race to be separated and I feel like if that would’ve happened the United States would be an awful place.
Martin Luther King and Malcolm X were two influential men who served as important figures for the Civil Rights Movement. The two men came from diverse backgrounds and had contrasting views in life about religion and African American’s stance in society. Malcolm X was born in Nebraska and had great amounts of exposure to racism. Martin Luther King was born in an educated family in Atlanta, where he experienced racism, but to a lower extreme than Malcolm X. Although they passed away long time ago, they continue to live on today in a world independent of segregation. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X used opposing principles to achieve equality for blacks; King utilized integration of both races and nonviolence as opposed to Malcolm X who separated the same races and employed non violence so as to achieve the same goal.
Martin Luther King Jr said,“We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools”. In the late 1960s, racial tension was high, African Americans were not given the right to vote, the right to a fair education, and the right to a fair judgement. This then led to the separation of schools and the destruction of a normal livelihood. Dr.King and Malcolm X, two men in the face of oppression rose up to challenge the racial barrier, thus changing the world forever. Although Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X seem to have mutual respect and an equal understanding of the inequality, their philosophies were quite different from each other.
