It is a normal day in fourth grade. I am continuously stumping my classmates academically; however, students also make fun of my accent and unbreakable pattern of defeat in my Physical Education, P.E class. I have come to accept my lack of athleticism, and am giving up on my dream to become an athlete. Yet deep down inside, it still matters to me that no one wants me on their team. I disguise my dreadful athleticism from my classmates by acting careless and uninterested in the game.

Annie John, a teenage girl growing up in Antigua, Cuba, experiences many events that mark her transition from childhood to adulthood. Examples include becoming distant from her mother while she makes her own decisions, and sailing away from home to begin a new life in England.
John is a character portrayed in Sinclair Ross’s short story “The Painted Door.” He is a middle-aged farmer who enjoys his time on the farm. Also, John has a “hulking body” (Ross 3), hardworking hands and a full beard during the winter. One of John's strengths is he is physically fit, which allows him to work in extreme conditions. In fact, with a storm brewing John decided to walk seventeen miles to check on his father in the bitter cold (Ross 5).
These memories, despite happening years ago, are still present in many lives, represented by Hortense’s claims that she remembers being inside her mother’s womb. Though European colonization happened long before Irie was born, she still lives within a community where the effects of colonialism can be seen. For example, when the headmaster of Irie’s school praises Sir Glenard for founding the school with the intention of mixing Caribbean and English people, it is revealed, “Glenard’s influence… ran through three generations of immigrants who could feel both abandoned and hungry even when in the bosom of their family in front of a mighty feast” (255). While Glenard’s intention with the school was to unite, his history of prejudice makes the community inherently divisive. Indirectly, colonialism still affects Irie—whether through her desperate attempts to straighten her hair or even the school she attends.
In the short story “Blackness” by Jamaica Kincaid, the narrator’s consciousness develops through a process of realization that she does not have to choose between the culture imposed on her and her authentic heritage. First, the narrator explains the metaphor “blackness” for the colonization her country that fills her own being and eventually becomes one with it. Unaware of her own nature, in isolation she is “all purpose and industry… as if [she] were the single survivor of a species” (472). Describing the annihilation of her culture, the narrator shows how “blackness” replaced her own culture with the ideology of the colonizers.
Jamaica Kincaid depicts an instructional survival guiding theme in “Girl,” about a mother giving essential advice to the daughter about very critical life issues. The advice consists of how to do many domestic acts such as Antiguan dishes, being a respectable young lady and many small suggestions to not have a ruined reputation amongst the society the young girl is living in. Throughout the short story uses symbolism to emphasize the theme entirely so the girl learns to behave and be pure in front of others who watch her every move. Moreover, the mother in this short story advises her daughter by telling her how to make certain foods. In many instances the mother does not hesitate to tell the daughter how and where to grow the vegetables needed for the dishes in which the daughter must learn to make.
However, Creole women were expected to be chaste, and would behave in a unreserved manner. The exposure to such openness is what frees Edna from her previously repressed emotions and desires and motivates her to become more independent. Because they are women, Adele and Edna do not have much freedom, as in comparison to men. However, Edna gains more freedom that is much closer to that of men when she abandons her household and social responsibilities. Edna’s refusal to follow and obey social conventions, allows her to spend her time on painting and sketching.
