As a product of generation Y, I have had the luxury of access to a plethora of technology over the course of my history. This has created an over-exposure of media not only to my generation, but to the succeeding generations as well. While technology and media have gone through constant metamorphosis, media exposure has ever increased.
As a young child, I had limited connections to media content. Most of my exposure to media was limited to television or movies. It wasn’t until 1st grade that I used my first computer. Every subsequent year after that, my technology use grew. My teachers began implementing computers and the internet use in their lesson plans. When I was a child I never imagined how large of an access we would have to information, nor how easy it would be to access this information. The world has transferred to a digital culture where we preserve our memories, traditions and information on the internet. I was not until I entered high school that I became fully enveloped in my media use.

The most important influence I’ve had an adopting this media use, has been peer influence. For the longest time, I was against using social media. But after constant pressure from my friends I caved in and decided to give these sites a shot. It started with Myspace back in 2008 and only grew from there. The use of these sites have had both positive and negative influences on my life.
When I first started my use of Facebook, all I cared about was how many friends I could add. The more I friends I added, the cooler it made me seem. However over the years I realized that having friends is not about quantity, but rather quality. Social media has made me far more cynical to me peers after reading numerous ridiculous statuses to outlandishly prejudice statements time and
To further convince the reader, Ludden uses a study referenced in a journal by the credible Duke University psychologist, Jenna Clark. The study addresses college students and how the more Facebook friends that freshman had, the less socially adjusted they felt, whereas with seniors, the more Facebook friends they had, the more socially adjusted they felt (Ludden). This was due to a majority of the freshmans' friends being friends from high school or back home, whereas most of the seniors' friends were friends that they had made in college, therefore they were more connected with them because they interacted with them both online and in person. This study makes it easier to understand how the effect that social media has on you fully depends on your use of it. It makes sense that one would feel isolated and less connected to their environment when they are spending their free time connecting with those who aren’t around them.
Org, “Human beings need face-to-face contact to be mentally healthy.” Social Media is lowering people’s self esteem because they can only see a certain side of these people’s lives. According to Dr. Gordon Flett, Canada Research Chair in Personality and Health, states “Social media is the bane of people’s happiness, We also have a tendency to believe how others describe themselves, which leads to false assessment — and sets us up for greater unhappiness.” They only show the good times, or the good pictures. Everything positive they show, so it makes you feel like the odd one out and less of a person then they are.
We are so concerned with impressing other people and worrying what they will think, that we ourselves, stop communicating. We tell people what we believe they want to hear, or what we believe will make us more appealing to that person or that group of people, rather than say what needs to be said or say what we feel is important. We are constantly checking the number of “followers” or “subscribers” or “friends” that we have across various platforms. When we notice that someone has more than us, it causes us to feel less important or more insignificant. Society has become almost dependent on social media, as most people cannot even remember someone’s birthday or phone number without it.
I disagree with Dailey’s results; strong friendships and bonds can be created over social media. Some people lack the social skills needed to make friends with their next door neighbor or the person standing next to them in their local market. “Facebook may not replace the full benefits of real friendship, but it definitely beats the alternative” (Dailey 144). For these people, Facebook is the perfect venue to get to know someone that they
As a society, people tend to live in an age where social media has the equivalent or rather extraordinary significance as a face-to-face interaction. The way individuals interact with one another has evolved over time due to: technology and mass medium almost representing the bang of technology use. Websites such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are designed to share photos, videos, thoughts, to connect with people and to spread awareness from politics to a daily update. Social media has both positive and negative effects such, it can help people engage and help people socialize, but it can also backfire and cage people to become antisocial and not gain the skills that are needed to have dialogue. There is no doubt that social media has
While our childhoods began just like our parents’ did, we quickly gained access to technology they had never even dreamed of. Cell phones, computers, and the internet became far more accessible and convenient than ever before. It was suddenly possible to access people and information at the touch of a button. So what did this
Media has the capacity to capture an audience’s attention and influence someone’s thoughts and ideas. Due to their growing and innocent minds, media can be very influential to children, in some cases it can stick with them as they grow into adults. Recently, this idea has been more concerning because as the world and society changes, the messages these movies are portraying have not. Therefore, researchers are interested in knowing how children are being affected, or not affected, by these films, and what other things may be adding to it.
In the book Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman, he discusses the “dangers” of television and elaborates his thoughts about how that specific media was affecting American society. Some of the main points Postman touched on can be compared to the modern media society has now. Postman elaborated that television gained control of American society, which meant that Americans stopped questioning the media and opened the opportunity for fake news to be spread. Americans didn’t know what was real and what was fake because, at the end of the day, everything was for entertainment purposes as Postman expresses. The most important topic he covered was that the media was becoming a curriculum where Americans gained their knowledge and ideals.
Chapter One: You Are What You See In today’s society, the media is inescapable. The advancements of technology have led to an even larger outreach of media--touching close to every person. For me, the media has always been an influence in my life. From the songs I’ve listen to, the movies I grew up watching, and the stories I’ve heard, the media has sculpted a significant portion of my identity.
In society today we hope that individuals will take the time to support you rather than go against you, but that isn’t always the case in our society. Social media nowadays effects the way many individuals go about their friendships. Many individual try to paint this picture that their life is perfect but in reality it is far from it. “Social media is harmless if we are careful to remember that simple fact. It’s powerless if we neglect the inclination to compare and criticize our own lives through the falsified images we too are guilty of creating” (Herrick).
A generational timeline towards millennialism today "By living through several generations, and following the news, the future of societies relationship with current affairs can never be predicted. " - Interviewee The progression of society and differing generational groups can be followed through the observation of television news and the impact it makes upon these generations. Although the first electronic television dates back to 1927, it is the development of the human race which transpired a generational mixture of television viewers. Through the continuation of generations, rapidly evolving ideas and emotions have become the metabolism of this network we call 'news'.
Since some schools are more open to the idea of intertwining technology with learning, some factors should be considered before transitioning. Before integrating technology into curriculums, schools should consider possible addiction that students may acquire, lack of skills and short attention spans that may result from technological exposure, as well as the positive potential that technology has- like easy access. In the end schools should focus on both the negative and the positive side to rule out which one outweighs the other. Being exposed to technology at first can have an exciting effect on the user, overtime this can lead to addiction. Younger generations especially, can easily get captured by the contents on their computer as most of them “prefer picture to words” (Source E).
Information and communication technology has seen lot of changes and advancements since the year 2000, key among them being the development of social media as a social influencer. It has become prominent parts of life for many young people today. We are all aware that social media has had a tremendous impact on our culture, in business, on the world-at-large and social media websites are some of the most popular haunts on the internet. Most people engage with social media without stopping to think what the effects are on our lives, whether positive or negative. Are we as society becoming more concerned with Facebook “friends” than we are with the people we interact with face-to-face in our daily lives?
Social Media: Affects Relationships As technology progresses more and more, there have been great changes that have made our lives more easy and efficient. There are many advantages that technology has brought upon us, one in particular is the Internet. The Internet has allowed people to be connected quickly to information and be updated to the issues and happenings around us, but the social networks that have been invented to allow long distance connection have been resulting in negative outcomes for society and our generation. Social media gets in the way of building actual relationships, makes people become inauthentic about their lives and lowers their self-esteem, and has become a dangerous and threatening nature. During these days, it seems as if nobody can live without checking their social media accounts, whether it’s Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter.
B. In Schools: Most individuals and organizations who champion the cause of media literacy recognize that it one of the most practical and effective ways to develop critical media literacies among the youth would be to incorporate media literacy in the school curriculum across K-12. Programs in schools can help students to access, analyse, evaluate and create media messgaes. Introducing and sensitizing them to the various issues related to media at such an early age could contribute to a responsive and healthy understanding of the media through the rest of their lives. This foundation could only be built upon in time with more access and more exposure to various media
