Every day commercials advertise unrealistic body image. Commercials are not the only culprits. Mass media such as television shows also portray women and men with fit bodies and nicer appearances than the average citizen. Commercials and mass media promote a limited body standard which causes a negative outlook in teen body image as well as lowers self-esteem.
I believe that American culture and media has had a negative impact on our perceptions of body image. In American society now, beautiful qualities are denoted by a skinny figure, large bust and hips, long hair, and a submissive personality. These attributes are unimaginable and have truly caused strife and complications to the other individual self esteem. Women today now stress over trying to obtain and maintain the specified attributes to stay what they believe is beautiful. Many girls become bulimic, anorexic, and or depressed in response to the verbal abuse or pressure that they may experience.
They're making them feel self conscious about their body and are encouraging them to be thinner because that's what society deems right. Back in the day this ad would have been taken lightly by a large amount of people. Thicker women obviously felt self conscious when seeing the Ad but that's what made them want to buy the product. This product was very uncontroversial. Not many people would have found this ad offensive.
