It was a hot, humid day in July. The kind that makes your hair frizz and your pits stink. My dad’s softball tournament was in full swing. They were in the bottom of the fifth with two outs, and his team was up by four. “It’s candy time!” The kids would scream, and off we’d go. At the time, I was a sweaty, brown-eyed five-year-old, the youngest of three sisters, with one goal: to beat my older sisters to the front of the concession stand line. The distance from the bleachers to the licorice and lollipops was equivalent to a one-hundred yard dash. I remember my little legs took off sprinting. I was winning (at least I think I was), running faster than my sisters. Then, all too quickly, BAM! I was sprawled flat on my face, my hands and feet laid out, just hard ground beneath my stunned body, my hand sliced on a shard of broken bottle. I screamed bloody murder all the way to the emergency room. My mom tried to comfort me to no avail; I was a blubbering, hysterical mess. The nurses lifted me onto the bed and tried to calm me …show more content…
This particular day tested my so-called “experience” I thought I had as a mom. During the festive gathering, my youngest daughter Sophie, seven at the time, was wielding her Grandpa’s knife while playing the present-opening assistant (Yoopers think knives are safe). Unfortunately, it did not go in her favor. She sliced her thumb and excitement quickly changed to panic. In that moment, I was reminded of my own bloody-murder scream. This time, however, I was the witness. The difference: no straight-blanket was needed; I stayed present in the moment and remained as calm as possible tending to her wound. In the end, I was reminded that memories have a funny way of triggering unforeseen connections. I gained a newfound perspective about being a mom for sure: “When life throws you a curve ball, don’t panic; just hit it out of the
In the opening chapter of the book Memorial Day, by Vince Flynn, the CIA has got some intimation that a nuclear bomb is set to go off in Washington D.C., in a week. It is up to Mitch Rapp, a CIA counterterrorism expert, and a handful of others to track down the bomb, and terrorists, and catch them before it is too late. Mitch Rapp flies all over the world piecing together the clues they need to come out ahead. The whole plot of the book Power Down, by Ben Coes, is set into action when two of the most successful United States Energy companies just merged into one. And not a day later, their two biggest energy plants are being blown up.
In “The Semantics of Flowers on Memorial Day” by Bob Hicok, is a similar take to war poems. However, it talks about the meaning of each flowers that were given on Memorial Day and how it doesn’t compare to the actions of war. The poet’s word choice and metaphors gave the poem details about Memorial Day and war. The author used words like “fucking trench foot,” “sex please now,” and “saying high-density bombing” (7-10). The word choice showed the character of the uncle.
Do you have a veteran in your family and live in Kentucky? If you do then you must be bamboozled when Veteran's Day rolls around and you don't get to spend the day with them and thank them for their services to this great nation and preserving our freedom. Less than 1% of Kentucky's schools are on a delay or canceled. You may ask "But this is Veteran's Day one of the most important days to our nation!?! Should schools really be on regular schedule?"
New Plans One Saturday morning, I woke up at seven in the morning to go to an amusement park called Six Flags. The plans had been made days ago, my two older sisters, my brother, a friend of ours and I would be going to Six Flags and spend the entire day there. As I got up after finally getting my alarm to finally shut up I walked over to the bathroom to take a shower when I realized that the ground was spinning, in my eyes at least, I had a vile taste in the back of my throat. I quickly fell back onto my bed feeling like if I hadn’t
Veterans Day Veterans Day is an official holiday we celebrate on November 11th, we celebrate all those living and dead who served in the US armed forces. The formal name of Veterans day was Armistice day and was changed to Veteran’s day by President Eisenhower in 1954. The first Veterans day celebrated was on November 11th 1919, a year after World War I ended. Veterans day started when there was an agreement signed in 1918 on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to end World War I. Veteran’s Day is often confused with Memorial day but Memorial day is honoring the past military and Veteran’s day honors all, living and dead.
Every year, since 1971, Memorial Day has been observed as a national holiday in the United States, in which we honor those who died while protecting our country. To me, Memorial Day is a time where we as a nation, are reminded that all of the freedoms and rights that we take for granted, came at the cost of men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting our country. When Memorial Day befalls its designated date, I am reminded that people fought and died for my freedom and rights. I am reminded that if people didn’t fight for me and for this country, it wouldn’t be the great and prosperous country that it is. Therefore, I take pride in the fact that someone went to war and died to protect my freedoms.
“... O say does that star spangled banner yet wave, o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.” Nearly every American can recite the final lines of our National Anthem. However, few take the time to truly contemplate the meaning of these words. When I hear these phrases, I think of the principles on which our country was founded: the right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. But perhaps more important than these rights are the defenders of them: our veterans.
Memorial Day is a special day to Americans. It is a day where we come together to pay respect to those who fought so diligently to defend our freedom and allow us to go about our lives as we know them. Memorial Day is often times confused with Veteran’s Day and, while they are both related, Veteran’s Day is a day to acknowledge service men and women still alive today. Memorial Day is a day that many observed back in their day but are no longer able to do so themselves but instead are the ones being honored by the living. The day is begun with the raising of Old Glory, then she is lowered to half-mast where she remains until noon, honoring those who have gave their lives in service of this wondrous nation.
Everyone has something so important to them that they are willing to sacrifice anything for. One eighth-grader strives to get her school’s traditional Veterans Day Ceremony back. Thirteen year old, Katelyn Kurovski found out three weeks ago that her school, Monticello Trails Middle School, might not be doing their traditional Veterans Day Ceremony for 2017. During class on October 30th, her teacher’s phone rang, and the principal of another school asked when their school was celebrating Veterans Day. The class broke out in questions when they overheard the teacher say that they had not seen anything on the calendar for Veterans Day.
Memorial Day can be considered as one of the Federal Holidays, which is celebrated in the memory of thousands of militants who died for the country. People in every corner of United States celebrate the Memorial Day. They also consider it as a good day to stay away from the hectic work schedule and go for a good cookout. However, the primary objective of having a Memorial Day is to honor and recognize all the sacrifices that have been done by the military veterans, who are alive or dead.
In The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Maya Lin employs rhetorical devices in order to elucidate, the gross cost of the Vietnam Conflict in U.S. lives. The minimalist design used in the Vietnam Veterans Memorial emphasizes the overwhelming amount of human lives lost. On the Wall, a small diamond is depicted next to the names of people confirmed dead, if a person is MIA(Missing in Action) they get a small cross next to their name. The cross can easily be carved into a diamond if the person is confirmed dead ,or turned into a circle, a symbol of life, if they are found alive.
The novel Five Days at Memorial by Sheri Fink gives an inside view of what happened at Memorial Hospital during Hurricane Katrina (2005); a disaster inside of a disaster. The lack of preparedness or ethical decision making is quite disappointing, considering Memorial hospital is located in New Orleans, Louisiana. New Orleans is well below sea level, and experiences frequent hurricanes and flooding. Memorial hospital itself had little to no plan for evacuating patients once the storm hit. Without power, many of the patients, especially those who were ventilator dependent, became at risk of death.
The day before Thanksgiving I woke up the day before Thanksgiving wondering how we were going to get all the food done. I wanted this Thanksgiving to be the best Thanksgiving our family has ever had. I got up, went upstairs and my Grandpa was already cooking and my grandma was already cleaning, so I decided to just jump right in. At the end of the day, some of the food was already done, and some of it had a lot to go, but we all knew we had tomorrow too. "
It was all a blur. Next thing I know I feel a sharp pain in my arm. I collapse and land head first. My breathing became hard and heavy. My eyes felt like they couldn’t stay up on their own.
