I endure an ongoing conflict within myself due to my identity. This conflict is by reason of the duality and hybridity of my culture. I am a product of Mexican immigrants born and raised in the United States. My experiences and where I came from have heavily influenced my sense of self. My identity has been constantly fluctuating since I recognized myself as Chicana and Mexican-American. I have always perceived the beauty behind my identify struggle just as others have as well. I am rich in culture because I am of two. The hybridity of both cultures presented a sensation of empowerment while it also has created a division within myself. It began displaying prehistoric California with saber tooth tigers and mammoths and ended with an image of an Olympian athlete. Each piece of the mural had a caption to explain the image of that section. In “El Mundo Femenino” by Amelia Mesa-Bains, Judy Baca is recognized as the artist to the world’s longest mural, being more than half a mile long. The primary focus of The Great Wall of Los Angeles was stated as “ a multiracial, not just a Chicano, chronicle of history” and explaining her product as a process of “empowering Chicanos and reclaiming neighborhood space” (Bains, 134). Baca’s main goal was to apprise to the community about the time line of history and what has brought us here today. Many people have recognized this story from history books, where they have failed to realize that it was all from the point of view of the winners, the privileged. She made this more than a Chicano piece, she told the story of other minorities as well. Baca presented the truth of history through her mural with the help of members of the community, especially the youth. In the period that followed the revolution, Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and Jose Clemente Orozco would become famous for presenting the history of Mexico, and of the three Rivera and Orozco would present their interpretation of Zapata, showing the symbolic strength of Zapata and the prevalence of his myth. Artists are as well as a proxy for the popular imagination since many ideas that they would express in their art would be what a section society. This reflects back on the manner in which many Mexicans during 1920 and 1930 being illiterate would come to understand their history and identity through their murals. Out of these artists, the one who would make Zapata into a hero would be Diego Rivera. The mural originally painted in the archway of the Palacio de Cortes in Cuernavaca includes the history of Morelos in which Zapata is present.
The Virgin of Guadalupe is a worldly known work of art; Jeanette Favrot Peterson questions the meaning of this iconic symbol in her article The Virgin of Guadalupe: Symbol of Conquest or Liberation? Peterson argues that this symbol is not only of religious connotation but of political value to freedom as well. Furthermore, paraphrasing her claims, that it was not until the nineteenth and twentieth century’s did the image reach its fullest potential of bringing together a fragmented people and become known as the “Mother of Mexicans.” The legend says that Juan Diego was visited by the Virgin on the hill of Tepeyacac and that she sent a message with him that she wanted a church built in her name, only after the third visit was he able to convince
Up until the 1960s Anglo social scientists wrote most of the literature about the people of Mexican- descent in the United States. Their analysis of Mexican American culture and history reflected the hegemonic beliefs, values, and perceptions of their society. As outsiders, Anglo scholars were led by their own biases and viewed Mexicans as inferior, savage, unworthy and different. Because Mexican scholars had not yet begun to write about their own experiences, these stereotypes were legitimized and reproduced in the literature. However, during the mid- 1960s scholars such as Octavio Ignacio Romano, Nick Vaca, Francisco Armando Rios, and Ralph Ricatelli began to reevaluate the literature written by their predecessors.
Mexicans are also responsible for creating jobs for the Americans, as seen in the 2004 film A Day Without A Mexican directed by Sergio Arau. Las Vegas is where I was born and raised. That doesn’t mean that I just gave up on my Mexican culture. Like many others, I have a culture that is both American and Mexican. My culture has shaped my values, perceptions, and behaviors. The culture of my family, community, and society has made who I am as a person in numerous ways.
Culture is an essential part of a community’s identity, because it links individuals to a collective bond. The Americas have always contained a vast variety of cultural communities, especially in the United States. The US is known for being one of the most diverse nations in the world, housing hundreds of different cultures. Mexican-Americans display a strong sense of a cultural background, which falls as a subset of the bigger Latino culture that links all Latinos. Oral history is a major aspect on the Mexican culture, which contributes to the truth of how history in the United States actually happened.
War is going on all the time and whether the causes are appropriate or not is debatable. Many times war is the last result, but for the US, in this case, armed conflict was the only option. On April 25th, 1846 a massive Mexican Army attacked Captain Seth Thornton and his US Army north of the Rio Grande. Many were overtaken by fear, of what was to come. War.
In the altar’s center is “a plaster image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, quarter-life size, its brown Indian face staring down on the woman” (Paredes 23). The implication of the stare is of criticism as the Virgin, symbolic of an ideal Mexican womanhood, looks down on Marcela, whose Anglo features starkly contrast with the Virgin’s, and whose actions are in opposition to the values that she represents. This carefully constructed scene is meaningful. Marcela’s lifeless body lies between the bed and the altar, and opposite to the altar is Marcela’s shrine dedicated to Hollywood movie stars. These are the visual images of the opposing forces that characterize the Mexican-American struggle for resistance against American cultural hegemony.
I’m the first generation of my family to be Mexican -American, but I have been introduced to the Mexican culture since I was born. I appreciate the difficulties my parents have faced to make me the person that I am today even though I wasn’t born in Mexico my parents have taught me the language and the culture which I’m so proud of being part of. For others being Hispanic is actually being born in any Latin American countries which is not true at all. Being Hispanic is much more than my cultural background it actually describes how much I appreciate my culture and how I get to experience things other people don’t. I fit into the Hispanic community through the experiencing the culture first hand ,participating in traditions and planning to include my culture in my future.
Cultural influences people on how to communicate with one another and its methods of communication from one culture to another. Culture plays a significant role in intercultural communication. Cultural identity is an element in a person’s life when one understands their own culture, leading to an understanding and appreciation of other cultures as well. It promotes a vital part of communication between people who come from different cultures. This paper will examine my Mexican American cultural background and how it affects my way of communicating with others.
I gained some insight from this piece of artwork. I chose to start with this video due to my background knowledge on the Virgin of Guadalupe. However, I obtained so much more knowledge after viewing this. The thing that was most striking to me was when Juan Diego presented his cloak to the bishop, not only did the requested roses fall, but also the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Next, I observed the Sun Stone documentary.
Mexican Culture: Customs and Traditions The Mexican culture is very diverse which has undergone many transformations over several decades and the culture varies widely throughout Mexico and the United States. I will be more focused on the other side of the border and express my findings about the Mexican culture in Mexico.
