As I sat in the second row of my commencement ceremony, across the stage stood Michelle Obama, delivering her last commencement address as the First Lady of the United States. I was completely engulfed with euphoria as she talked about the essence of education, diversity, and resilience. During what I would call one of the most memorable moments of my life, the admiration I had for her was reaffirmed. I most aspire to emulate Michelle Obama because she publically espoused values of integrity, determination, and empathy that are synonymous with my own. She has made a tremendous impact on many communities worldwide whilst maintaining her core values.
Before becoming the 44th First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama had a remarkable background as a public servant. As the Executive Director of a non-profit leadership program called Public Allies, she dedicated her time to help young adults develop skills necessary for future careers in public service. In her role as the Associate Dean of Student Services at the University of Chicago, she also developed their first community service program. As First Lady, she maintained that her successes came with an obligation to share the lessons that she had learned and use the opportunities she had to help others. Throughout the presidency of Barack Obama, she focused her attention on current social issues, advocating for healthier families, women empowerment, higher education, and international adolescent girls’ education.

Inside her house one day, Ernest Greene recalls the media attention and crowds. He also remembers her telling him that “The fact that the president of the United States has sent the United States Army here to escort you into school means that this government is finally serious about school desegregation.'" By presenting this anecdote, Obama unleashes the appeal of unity upon the audience, by contrasting the fact of a young white girl sharing the same opinion with an elderly black man. The use of this juxtaposing yet consolidating statement persuades the audience to unify and merge together, even though they may be racially different. The effect of this anecdote on the audience is implicitly the opposite of what the racial divide has done. This further reiterates the message of unity, which is something that Obama intended to put to counteract the controversial statements of his ex-pastor Wright.
The Sandy Hook shooting in Newtown Connecticut resulted in the death of twenty school children and six adults. Following the shooting, President Obama delivered a speech that moved citizens all over the country. President Obama became notorious for his subtle diction and natural body language that conveys sincerity and truthfulness along with the direct implication of his true thoughts. In this speech he effectively identifies himself not as a Democrat or Republican, but as a parent who wanted nothing more than to protect the children of our country. To do this, he uses vivid diction, open body language, controlled facial expressions, and a somber tone to deliver a speech that made the American people waiver.
With that being said, Obama has made many achievements to the society and will continue to carry on his promising work. In conclusion, Barack Obama inspires many people by the outstanding speeches he gives, his community service, and his belief that, we can all make the world a better place. Although some people might argue that Shirley Chisholm does not demonstrate leadership qualities, a closer examination proves that the former congresswoman was a strong leader because of her independence, perseverance, and willingness to take risks. Shirley Chisholm is a great leader because she blazed a trail by being the first African American Congresswoman. For example, “Chisholm indulged her maverick nature in a spectacular gesture. She became the first black woman to run for president” (Morin pg1).This proves that she was the first black individual in her field to run for president so this makes her a trailblazer because all leaders should possess this for the reason that no leader can lead from behind.

I recently had the privilege of listening to Leymah Gbowee, from Liberia, Africa, give a talk on her peace and female activism efforts in West Africa. Gbowee is a very down to earth soul. She started her talk off asking if she should sit or stand and decided to sit and, in her words, “Rest my aching bones and let this be a conversation.” Leymah was born in Monrovia, Liberia and grew up as a child and young woman living with her parents and sisters when the 1st Liberian Civil War broke out. She started out as a trauma counselor treating child soldiers and went on to social work school to become a Social Worker.

On September 8, 2009 in Arlington, Virginia, President Barack Obama issued a “Back to School” speech. In this speech, he outlined the importance of a student’s education and how it may reflect on their future. President Obama plans to encourage students to try their hardest in the upcoming school year by convincing them to “put their best effort into everything that they do” no matter how challenging life may get at times. Succeeding in school is not always easy due to other challenges in life, but it is definitely not impossible. Growing up, Barack was raised by a single mother who did not have loads of money to send him to school with the other American children.
Barack Obama’s win for President in 2009 was a historical moment for the United States. His inaugural speech was much anticipated, because this was going to set the tone for his presidency. His speech told the American people that improving the economy is one of his priorities, but there were also other areas he would like to improve like healthcare and the education system. This was a speech that was meant to persuade the American public to take action for them to rise as a nation again, and for them to put their trust into him. His message addressed a couple of specific points like his gratefulness to the American people, the different crises America is facing, how America will overcome these crises, replying to his cynics, addressing the world, and then he reminded America again to be brave like they’ve always been to overcome the hard times (5 Speechwriting Lessons from Obama's Inaugural Speech, (n.d.).
She states that although she is a prominent leader, she never truly accomplished everything she had, alone. By recognizing Nancy Reagan as a figure that “mentored” and “offered her advice”, Michelle reveals the importance of the people who have stood by her in support of the actions she has made to promote female education. To continue, she thanks not only those who have already helped but also women that will be a part of future efforts to continue awareness of this struggle. In
