When riding on a roller coaster the excitement consumes your very being as you feel the slingshot of velocity with every drop you take. Feelings of happiness, scaredness and sadness pile on you like mad hounds. Love can definitely portray those qualities. The statement love is a roller coaster, is proven true in Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare. The traits of a roller coaster are displayed in the relationship of Hermia and Lysander. A roller coaster is an experience of violent ups and downs changing constantly from happy and joy to elation and despair. To be electric is to contain aliveness and thrilling emotions beyond explanation and to seek the passion out with determination. The electricity begins with Lysander promising Hermia they will be wed. Previous to this, Lysander and Hermia have been ordered to put their relationship to a halt. But they have been deceitful and are preparing to be wed outside Athenian law. “There gentle Hermia, may I marry thee” (1,1,161). The level of deception caused extreme heat between the two of them . Between Hermia’s father’s disapproval and the two making out in secret, the electricity was alive and roaring. Secondly, Lysander and Hermia form plans to start a new life together outside of Athens. Precedent, they have made plans to be wed outside of Athenian law because Hermia’s father has interdictedLysander from seeing Hermia. Therefore they have commenced fabricating their future plans together. “There my Lysander and myself shall meet; and thence from Athens turn away our eyes, to seek new friends and stranger companies”2 (1,1,217-219). Hermia and Lysander felt a deep passion and followed through on their feelings with determination. Lastly, Lysander wants to spend the night close to Hermia. At this point, Lysander and Hermia have followed up on their plans and run away into the woods together late at night. “One turf shall serve as a pillow for us both. Because of Puck’s doings, cause and effect occur. Hermia and Lysander go back to Egeus to ask for his blessing. Fortunately, Egeus grants them the right to be wed: “Of my consent, that she should be your wife”8 (4,1,158) In the end they stuck through and because of this Hermia and Lysander will have no end to their love. Lastly, Oberon; the king of the fairies, gives Hermia and Lysander his blessing just as Hermia’s father did. Beforehand, Puck has placed the love juice on Lysander’s eyes causing Lysander to finally love Hermia once again. “So shall all the couples three, ever true in loving be”9 (5,1,398-399).
