Possessing strong leadership skills will not only help a career in the military, but also assist success in the civilian world. Leaders can have many types of leading styles but only some types of leadership styles work well. The three categories reviewed in our lecture are technical, human, conceptual skills. When it comes to leadership, I find that I am strong with technical and human skills. I define a leader as a role taken by someone that displays these skills; I use technical skills, human skills, and conceptual skills in order to be a strong leader. I have many different technical skills depending on the situation. For example, I work at Chick-fil-a (CFA) and I know how to make food; also by being a trainer at CFA I am in charge of training new employees on tasks that I already know how to do. New employees are able to ask me things like, “How do I run the register?” or “How do I make this sandwich?” because I am experienced …show more content…
Being bilingual has allowed me to help many Spanish speaking families find jobs, complete paperwork, and communicate daily. Being able to interact and communicate easily has allowed me to become team captain and a store manager. Finally, human skills has shown me how easy it can be to interact with others. Having strong human skills has allowed be to become the type of leader that I am today. Conceptual skills is a probably the type of leadership skill that I am the least skilled at and use the least. I know of one incident where I had to come up with a plan at work in order to get my crew to get out on time. Usually, I am not good at things like this but in this instance, I had to adapt in the situation. Under that circumstance I was able to place my team in the certain positions that I found suitable. We were able to close the restaurant in timely-manner; however, I typically have adapt to find a solution for the problem when it comes to things involving conceptual
3 FAMILY, COMMUNICATION, HONESTY Leadership Philosophy: Family, Communication, and Honesty SSG Zohfeld SLC Class - 002 The best way to describe my leadership philosophy is with the word care. I have been told many times in my career that I care too much. The idea that caring about the unit, the mission, or your Soldiers could be a bad thing is absurd. The idea that I cared too much would become apparent while assigned to 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division.
My training occurred in one of the finest leadership schools in the world: the United States Marine Corps. Consequently, my instruction was not delivered by a professor in a university lecture hall. Rather, my leadership skills were acquired through interaction with every Marine leader I met; in every moment of every hour of every day; in every detail, every action, and every contingency. For ten years as a Marine officer, I was immersed in a culture of excellence built upon a foundation of teamwork, shared sacrifice, and core values which inculcated within me an indelible understanding of the importance of leadership. Former Commandant of the Marine Corps, General John Lejeune, once said, “Leadership is the sum of those qualities of intellect,
Perceptions of leadership vary in terms of the emphasis on the leader abilities, personal traits, influential relationship, cognitive versus collective interest. Also, they vary in whether they are normative or descriptive in nature as well as their relative emphasis on behavioural styles (den Hartog & Koopman, 1999). Due to this, various leadership theories have emerged leading to different approaches of studying leadership, namely, Great man, trait, behavioural and relationships. These different theories expose a dire need for the recipe of an effective leadership. 2.4.1
Basically, a good leader has to have a purpose and a balanced personality and skills to put that purpose into action.
I founded out very interest of military leadership is difference from the way business leadership management. The article of “Leadership Lesson from West Point” characterizes leadership in two different conducts. The ways that people life matter by their decision making and direction. Leadership defines as the action of leading a group of people or organization. They creates an inspiring vision of the future, motivates, coaches and do the right thing.
As we all know not everyone is capable of being a good leader, some were born to lead and some were not meant to lead. A leader’s personality should include honesty, is able to communicate, the ability to delegate,
Military leaders regardless of rank are of significant importance and have a major influence on the unit that they are tasked to lead. “The power of leaders to influence the motivation and performance of soldiers is well accepted within military and civilian communities” (Brit, 541). Critical to any military operation, an effective leader is vital in the completion of any mission, however when leaders are not able to motivate their subordinates, give clear directions, promote unit cohesion and morale, or even reprimand unsatisfactory performance, it can have negative effects on the unit and directly impact unit personnel and mission accomplishment. The effects of destructive leadership in a military unit will directly impact mission by causing the effects of excessive stress, destruction of team cohesion and the deterioration of morale from the very personnel they are attempting to lead.
The major lessons for the military leaders to achieve the objectives of the National Military Strategy 2015 are a result of the evolution of the ways to fight the war, the relations among the involved actors and the use of the military to get political objectives. To show the importance of these lessons, this essay discussed the relevance of the ingenuity of the commander and the proper assessment to deter, deny and defeat adversary states, the need of adaptation and focused communication to combat violent extremist organizations and the utility of a combination of soft and hard power to strength alliances and partnerships. Lesson 1 (NMS Objective #1): Theories and technology are tools for the commander, but the ingenuity and skills allows
He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent" (McCarther 2015). A leader should lead from the front and also have the ability to think quickly on their feet and take care of their Soldiers. Have faith and trust that the leadership is doing their best to keep everything in
The most effective type of leader is the one willing to put his/her dirt in the mess with everyone else, meaning outward action instead of leading by a silent example. The reason why leading with outward action tends to be more successful is because, a leader is can never be silent. A leader has to be with his/ her group and direct them with confidence and do the task with them as well. A silent leader on the other hand, doesn’t show much confidence in themselves or in their instructions. I consider myself to be an outward leader in my school, community, and family.
Individuals need only work hard to develop the skills of a good leader to be effective. This is encouraging for people who are interested in excelling but do not have the traits or innate abilities proposed in other leadership theories. A skills-based leadership theory also makes it easy to select a leader by taking inventory of each potential leader's skills in the important areas. Limitations
In fact, leadership is an art rather than a science. The process of learning leadership is a hand-on experience, which focuses on practice instead of concepts itself. This course provides me a chance to gain more insight about leadership and it helps me develop my new image of leadership. Meanwhile, I also use the theories in our textbook as a framework for self-assessment of my leadership skills and try to develop my own leadership style during the
My initial favorite transferable skills are personal development and motivation. Though it can be challenging, I think I am able to keep my personal stress under control especially when faced with obstacles and trying to meet certain goals or deadlines. Stress can be beneficial, but it has to be under control as too much of it can have both negative effects on an individual and the organization. I like that I am able to motivate myself, set goals, effectively prioritize my tasks and manage my time so that I can avoid distraction and be more efficient.
Coaching is the military becomes part of everyday when one gets to the rank of sergeant. This is due to the fact that one has learned from the senior non-commissioned officers and through his or her own experiences. Even though it is a monthly requirement to evaluate and coach your subordinates, not everyone does it properly. Coaching and evaluation is a two way street. Yes, it might be directed by the senior person, but input by the employee needs to be taken into account.
Nowadays, leadership is one of the main¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬ qualities that different enterprises look for in a person before hiring them. As a matter of fact, leadership has become so important that most colleges have recurred to teaching leadership courses in every area of study. So it’s no longer reserved to a fancy group of people who major in politics or business which were considered to be the only careers where leadership was required. Today anyone could be a good leader, and everyone should know how. It is convenient however, to ask ourselves how right or wrong the popular beliefs could be.
