“Don't judge a man until you’ve walked two moons in his moccasins.” Said Sharon Creech in the novel “Walk Two Moons”. Sal (Walk Two Moons) and Claudia (Missing Mama) Share the same feeling of losing their mothers in a tragic way. “Walk Two Moons” and the poem “Missing Mama” by Claudia Lee share the same theme of overcoming adversity. The main character of “Walk Two Moons” Sal (Short for Salamanca) has to overcome her mom leaving her and her dad and going to Idaho. What she didn’t find out until the next year was while her mom was on her way to Idaho she died in a bus crash. Sal talks about what her mother said a few days before she left and how she mentioned leaving but she never thought her mom would leave forever. “She said she had to leave in order to clear her head, and to clear her heart of all the bad things She needed to learn about what she was.” Once Sal’s mother leaves a few days …show more content…
Walk Two Moons takes its time to show you that Sal's mother died whereas the poem “Missing Mama” is right to the point. One of the feelings that they both go through is not being able to go with their mothers and be with them forever. In Claudia's poem, she writes “The day that you left I just didn't know, That you were going where I couldn't go” They both feel miserable about losing their mothers. Claudia’s feelings towards her mother aren't as deep as Sal’s to her mother. “But gosh, how I miss you and wish you were here.” this quote is from the poem “Missing Mama”. Sal thought that when her mother left she would be able to see her again, she wasn't worried about not being able to see her until she found out that her mother had died. After her mother died she just felt like she wanted to be with her and tell her things that she hadn't told her before. Claudia Lee feels the same way about her mother, even though her mother had a chance of living she felt hopeful until she finally
“Yo’ Mama’s Disfunktional” is a book written by Robin Kelley. In this book, Kelley fights back for African-Americans. He is tired of people talking about African-Americans, especially mothers. Kelley feels as if people are blaming the poor blacks for the stereotypes that they face today. Kelley believes that scientist do their studies in African-American cities and don’t show enough about how African-Americans are depicted in their everyday lives.
The last external force that changed Sal was the fears she gained when she heard that her mom was dead. In the novel Sal gained fears of a whole bunch of life threatening things when her mom died. On page 12 Sal says, “For example, I was terrified of car accidents, death, cancer, brain tumors, nuclear war, pregnant woman, loud noises, strict teachers, elevators, and scads of other things.” This proves that Sal developed fears when her mom died. This is because Sal’s mom picked her up when she got hurt and killed the baby so now Sal is afraid of that.
Chanhassen then wanted to travel to find herself. When Sal 's mother got to Idaho, she died in the tragic bus accident, Sal started to blame herself "I didn 't want to blame her. She was my mother, and she was part of me." (Creech, page 109) . Sal then was being told by her grandparents that it was not her fault "Sometimes you know in your heart you love someone, but you have to go away before your head can figure it out" (Creech, page 146).
What is the right thing to do? Ellie Wiesel believes people should do the right thing, but more importantly these should choose a side. Indifference is worse than anger, rage, and hatred as Ellie said, “Anger can at times be creative. One writes a great poem, a great symphony, have done something special for the sake of humanity because one is angry at the injustice that one witnesses”(Elie Wiesel, The Perils of Indifference). With indifference people are only punishing the victim and helping to achieve the goal of the unrighteous.
Sal said, “He was right about one thing, though: we didn’t need to bring her body back because she is in the trees, the barn, the fields,” (page 262). Now that Sal knows her mom is dead, she realizes why her dad didn't bring her body back to Bybanks. She knows that her mom is in everything, that her mom is everywhere. That’s why her dad
The author stresses this point on the very last page by summing up once again the mother live through the symbolism of a sea horse” outside, a faint sliver of what only two weeks ago had been a full moon dangled like a seahorse from the sky”(pg 260) the seahorse shaped moon like her mother was alive and bright just weeks ago, compared to now where her mother is dead only leaving the sliver of what it once
People’s actions as well as behaviors are all developed as they grow up. As they grow up children begin to develop the same behaviors or actions from their parents. Some adults and children develop psychological disorders. These are mainly caused by Biological influences: evolution, individual genes, brain structure and chemistry; Psychological influences: stress, trauma, learned helplessness, mood-related perceptions and memories; and Social Cultural influences: roles, and expectations (pg.508). As in Mommie Dearest, Joan (Faye Dunaway) has multiple disorders that later on are developed by her daughter Christina (Mara Hobel).
Exploring Psychology by David G Myers (2014) says that a psychological disorder is a syndrome marked by a “clinically significant disturbance in an individual’s cognition, emotion regulation, or behavior” (American Psychiatric Association 2013)(p. 506). In the movie Mommie Dearest directed by Frank Perry we see Joan Crawford played by Faye Dunaway. The character Joan portrays many different psychological disorders, which affects how we see her role in the movie. Multiple disorders were evident throughout the film, but three major disorders that were noticeable were obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bipolar, and borderline. Mommie Dearest is a story about Joan Crawford (Faye Dunaway) who is a great Hollywood actress.
The conflicting interests of the mother and the father result in a situation where one must make a sacrifice in order to preserve the connection in the family. The flat depressed tone of the poem reflects the mother’s unhappiness and frustration about having to constantly
Someone once said, “ Life is a war, with blood shed and hate, but in that hate, love and warmth grows in the corner to show you, you are not alone.” This relates to Sal and Phoebe greatly, because of their similarities in their life, and their moms leaving, and them thinking the same way. In the book Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech, the struggles Phoebe faces in subplot are similar to the struggles that Sal faces in the plot. One of the significant struggles in both Sal and Phoebe’s lives is that both moms are sad and their daughters don’t notice. Both Prudence and Sal don’t realize that their moms are sad, and carry on with their day, like nothing's bothering them.
As a result He grows closer to an older woman ‘Auntie’ and works to not burden her. On page 17 of the book it states “Salva stayed in the woman’s barn again that night...water from the pond.” , this shows how mature Salva truly is as he refuses to cause
In Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech, there is a very important subplot that relates to the main plot and it is about a girl named Phoebe and her whole, entire story. One reason and probably the most obvious is that in Phoebe’s story, her mother, Mrs. Winterbottom, goes away, and in Sal’s life, her own mother runs away. There are a few differences like Sal’s mom had passed away from her being in a bus crash in Idaho. So Sal indefinitely knew that her mother was not coming home. While, on the other hand.
While his uncle was alive, he helped Salva do everything throughout the journey. Even when he died nobody forgot him and Salva’s memory of his loving uncle gave him the strength to finish the journey. Food and water was the most important factor that led to his survival. He knew that there was barely any water in the desert and that it was hard to find food which taught him to treasure everything he was given. Throughout the book we are led to believe that Salva’s parents and siblings had passed away but he never lost hope that they were still alive.
However, the moon also carries “the first few stars,” showing that in the midst of darkness their is a glimpse of light. Although the speaker is always left sad when mother visits, the speaker also feels a little love that a mother rightfully possess. The moon came only to visit with no intention to stay. It comes and go and is headed to the “northern sky”. The moon passes the room as path to her intended destination.
“A mother 's love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity. It dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path.” The wise words of Agatha Christie ring true for many across the world; the unconditional love a mother holds for her child. An instinct so powerful and caring, it does not allow for any interference or hindrance.
