Differentiation is a style of strategy that utilizes advertising, product features, technology, etc. to make its brand stand out from the rest of the competition (Daft, 2016, p. 60). Being a beer company, it is pertinent that Molson Coors take advantage of any kind of advertising possible, considering the number of competitors there are in the beer world. Fortunately, Molson Coors does exactly that. In 2016 alone, they were the second highest paying brewery when it came to advertisements (Ad spend of beer manufacturers in the U.S. 2016, 2017). Coming in behind Anheuser-Busch, Molson Coors spent around $437 million on advertisements in 2016 (Ad spend of beer manufacturers in the U.S. 2016, 2017). This crucial spending on advertisements to showcase new products and services is precious to the brewing company. The more people that see the ads, the more product that is going to sell, and by making their product more unique and better than the competition, they will gain loyal customers. These loyal customers are what Molson is hoping to gain through their style of competitive strategy of differentiation. By making unique cans and bottles, and unique advertisements and commercials, the Molson Coors Brewing Co. can take hold of a lot of the beer industry through their differentiation

They have a huge vestment in extreme sports, music bands, models, athletes etc. which reaches beyond the norm of today’s companies. I found out why they chose this business strategy from their website in that they don’t only promote a product they promote a “lifestyle in a can.”
