Twenty four year old Monnie Baker is going through the worst time of his life after his baby moms leave him with their ten year old son Clay Baker. Monnie is currently working at a $10 hr paying job and staying with his grandmother until he can get back on his feet. He’s got a side hustle going on when he doesn't have to work him and his son go to the studio and his son play around why he records. His name is growing, He’s getting more shows, and money is slowly piling. Grandma and son are still working and going to school not knowing that soon they will be buying a new home in another state. So the same day Monnie waits on his family to come home to tell them the good news. Months and months go past schools finally over and Monnie is looking like the man of his city. A Lot of hate is getting thrown his way and he feels he should leave before he mess his career up. He tells his family their moving to Cali and it's a little fuss with his son but he feels they can get past that. After a few days they’re all packed up and ready to go leaving all the memories and struggle in the home as they begin their road to success. It's been a good couple days and their finally at their new home 4 bedrooms 3 bathrooms and much more. Clay didn't expect it and is just running around the house because all of the space they have now Monnie is unloading the truck and grandma is making the house look like how a grandma makes a house look. With Monnie being a big star now they are on top and living life never in a million years thinking that this a happen but it did. Kit Cahill had everything going for him. He’d moved out of his small town and moved to Atlanta after high school. He’d even landed a job working for the premier hair salon, Tony’s. Life had been great. It was surprising just how quickly all of that could be ripped from his grasp.
Early on, Clay’s concept of home is tainted by the murder of his mother. Many eerie affairs transpire in Clay’s lifetime, but none surpass the death of Denzel. Although Clay killed Denzel in self-defense, this action haunted him exceedingly, especially after he learned how his mother was also killed by an ex-lover with a similar murder weapon. He and Alma spend time at Myrtle Beach in order to help him cope with his actions but, even then, Clay is ready to return home. He finally informs Alma that it is time to leave, and on the drive he eagerly notes that “the landscape began to look more and more like home” (House 285). Clay longs to go home and is prepared to face his shadowed past that accompanies his abode.

In the midst of all of this he finds a balance by focusing on what really matters. At the same time this keeps him focused on his main goal which is education. Education will be his family's way out of poverty. Through seeing his younger brother that is unemployed and will be having a child soon he looks beyond this and is genuinely proud of where he comes from. He realizes how strong his family is when he seems them fighting through poverty and making things.

Amy Tan’s “Two Kinds,” written in 1989, captures the relationship of a mother and daughter from China that has just relocated to America. So, in the beginning of the short story Tan expresses the mother’s beliefs of America by saying “my mother believed you could be anything you wanted in America” (Tan, Two Kinds, www.rtsd.org). then going into examples such as “You could open a restaurant.
