Mr. Gary Marcus, the author of "Moral Machines,” breaks down the different scenarios of the use of robot technology in our everyday lives. Even more, he goes into discussion about the use of technology in our automobiles. The possible use of the technology would let computers make all the "critical" decisions when it comes on-road travel; but is use of technology a good thing or a bad thing? Should we let computers make possible life or death decisions when they appear on the roads and highways? The automobile is certainly a dangerous tool and in this following essay I’ll show how Gary Marcus proves that there is a use for such computers and robots in our everyday lives.
This essay Mr. Marcus has written could catch the focus of anyone who owns a car or has a great respect for technology. Automobile manufacturing companies would also find this essay informative. People all over the world come up with different ideas/ways to do things. If any automobile manufacturer is looking for new ideas to develop a new product than they’ll do the research to find these ideas. I think quite possibly they will find the information in Gary Marcus’s essay interesting and useful. Marcus breaks down his essay

He says in his essay that he would rather left the robot injure someone than yourself injure someone. I don’t agree with that because I know my level of awareness is much higher than any robots will be if it’s left up to it to choose to stop on the brakes or swerve out of the way to save a child’s life. I would much rather injure myself than live with hitting a
Harwell effectively presents his argument by utilizing the Aristotelian appeal, ethos. He uses this appeal to the fullest extent in this article, which establishes his credibility as a writer and driver. He begins his argument by describing these new driverless cars, “Cameras and computers that alert you (and hit the brakes) when they suspect a potential crash; systems that smoothly steer the car along turns and curves at highway speeds; and even "adaptive cruise control," which changes its speed, second by second, to mimic the flow of traffic,” (Harwell), this tactic is effective becomes it frames his argument. Additionally, he presents the experiment he conducted; he drove two of the more economical driverless cars in the market. Harwell explains why we should not depend completely on these new vehicles, “On the other hand, these cars will punish us for trusting them too much.
In the non-fiction article, “Let the Robot Drive”, by Tom Vanderbilt the objective summary is about the pros and con of the future of driving. Tom Vanderbilt explains that driving has quickly changed from manual to autonomous abilities and that this quick growth in a car’s ability, will allow for cars to become smarter in the future. In addition, these autonomous abilities will be better than the human driver in every way. Tom believes this will lead to many positives and negatives for cars and their drivers. For drivers, the believed goal is to distance themselves from active engagement in operating vehicles which allows for more safety.
Later in the paragraph, he uses pathos again when talking about a family in Leonhardt’s community who had died in a car crash. The fact that it was a family in the author’s neighborhood makes it a little more appealable, yet the author tells the story ineffectively due to a lack of emotion in his storytelling method. The story was very brief, lasting only two sentences. I now length doesn’t usually make something effective or not, but the story lacked important details that could have made it more effective. For instance, if the author had given the people in the story names, it would have made the story easier to sympathize with, but without the names, the characters were dehumanized, leaving the audience without a genuine care for the characters.
Neil Postman dives into a deeper understanding of technology and how he perceives certain technological developments. He considers the outcome that technology has on societies and cultures and then evaluates them to see if they are beneficial or detrimental. He also examines what people, who base their lives around technology, do to keep technology in power. His ideas about technology are in a perspective that numerous people would not consider because he is willing to contemplate all the angles of technology. Driverless cars have become a recent design that most people would consider a huge step for mankind in technological advancement but after reading Postman and getting some insight of his views on technology, driverless cars could end
People design smart systems for driverless cars to provide safe and convenient service for drivers, nevertheless when cars should choose whom to protect in an unavoidable accident, different people have different thoughts. Markoff in his articles writes “......to spare others, the researchers, not surprisingly, found that people would rather stay alive”(Markoff, 1). This quote is about a quiz consequence which shows that people would rather stay alive in a complex situation than save others. Accordingly to this result, if manufacturers want to sell their smart cars well, they may choose to design a system which can protect passengers first, and apparently, it seems dangerous to the pedestrians, even the public safety. Markoff also provides another person’s view in his article: “Before we can put our values into machines, we have to figure out how to make our values clear and consistent”(Markoff, 3).
In today’s world, many innovations have been brought into the automotive industry such as the introduction of electric cars. The growing alternative that has been said to have many unique benefits compared to combustion cars. Companies like Tesla have really begun to push their game to show the automotive world that electric cars can be better than gas vehicles in many ways. Nissan, Mercedes, and Audi have also begun to take interest in electric cars in the recent years. Therefore, electric cars are a viable replacement for combustion cars because they are safer, cheaper, easily maintained, and just simply a better driving experience compared to the traditional combustion car.
Close Reading Questions Bradbury sets up an atmosphere of loneliness and isolation in the opening paragraphs of the story by repeating the word alone. Throughout the opening he keeps bringing up the fact that Mr. Leonard Mead is alone because there are no other citizens walking around at night. Mead’s “brightly lit” house tells the reader that he is not a normal citizen in this society, and that he has lights on, unlike his neighbors whose only light is the TV screen. It also tells the reader that he is unique, and the reader later finds out that he is a writer who can develop thoughts and ideas. The evidence for this is when the narrator says at the end of the narrative, “...but this one particular house had all of its electric lights brightly lit, every window a loud yellow illumination, square and warm in the cool darkness.”
INTRODUCTION Computerized vehicles have been working on open roadways since 1994. They are a technology that helps human drivers via mechanizing parts of vehicle control. Innovation is progressing
As society continues to develop and makes new plans, technology in today’s world is starting to raise some questions. Patrick Lin, is a philosopher and director of the ethics emerging group at the state University in California. With the help of the university Patrick Lin wrote an essay called The Big Question: in his essay, he talks about the technologies and ideas in which many people seem to overlook today. In hopes of raising awareness about the upcoming industrial revolution of robotics. the changing of the world around us is already underway.
All over the world people rely on technology in their daily lives. The large majority of people perceive technology as good. After all, many technological advancements are good; it is because of technology that we now have all of the information in the world that can be accessed by a machine the size of our hands, known as a smartphone. This is to say that technology and its advancements are generally perceived as good, but not all of them are good. Self-driving cars are a new technology that is being developed.
Or how these cars with cause so much trouble with roadblocks and traffic. The technology for this car isn’t safe at all. These cars are already informations about routes,so if for example a road gets closed down, the car won’t know where to go and you can get lost very easily. What happens when the car has a glitch and the car goes out of control and you get into an accident. The car also has problems figuring out what is harmful and what isn’t.
Reveal Topic: The electric car is a relatively new concept in the world of the automotive industry. Establish Credibility: I have been interested in the electric car and I have reed a number of books and articles about it. Preview Main Points:
While self-driving vehicles will provide a new form of technology in the future, they will affect our society by being an emerging technology that is innovative, dangerous, and unreliable. Self-driving cars are a new form of emerging technology. An article that was recently published discussed the positive and negative effects of self-driving buses which led to research on self-driving cars. The emerging technology of driverless vehicles was introduced on public roadways. Crelin stated that “Long predicted to be an impending and emerging technology, driverless vehicles developed slowly over the course of the twentieth century but emerged fully into public view in the first decades of the twenty-first” (1).
There are about 260 million cars on the road today. As a result of so many people driving, the chance of accidents increase and every year about 1 million people die from car related accidents. However, most of these accidents could have been prevented, because around 81% of these accidents are caused by human error. These errors could one day be eliminated, when people start to use self-driving cars, because there will be no need for human input when using the car. Self-driving cars, are a vehicle that can navigate its environment without the use of a human.
Living in a Driverless Future: Delightful or Dangerous? How interested would you be if somebody offered to hire you a chauffeur which could drive you anywhere, come back to pick you up, and be completely free to you? Odds are, you would be jumping all over it. However, robotic, not human, helpers may be the next great milestone in transportation. Tomorrow, maybe, completely autonomous cars will steer themselves across mountain ranges and through downtowns.
