The need and mutual respect for love and companionship is what truly makes one human. In the book Frankenstein it is seen from the first time Victor brings his monster to life that he has no compassion or attachment towards him. In fact, he abandons him out of fear. Throughout the story the monster feels a lack of affection, not only from Victor but from the other people he meets and wants to make friends with, leaving him in misery. Due to persistent abandonment and apathy, the monster sought out revenge and committed treacherous acts of violence. Mr. Ballen explains that it is due to a difficult life at home ,and an abusive father that led Ammad to where he is now. Ballen says “ ‘Yet with his father he had a lot of difficulty. In fact, he had one incident where his father hit him, and he felt that because his father hit him, he was going to hell. This drove him into the behavior and this drove him towards - ultimately towards religion, because he wanted to redeem himself, and in essence he wanted to find his father 's love.’ “(Ballen). Davies asks why this would affect Ammad in such a way and then explains that is because of their culture. “‘...in that belief system, a father 's approval is the most important fact of your life. Your being revolves around it. And so for him to think that his father hated him or didn 't approve of him made him think he was going to hell, and hell to him was a very literal place...So the idea of going to jihad to redeem himself, to find his father 's love, if you will, was a very powerful motivation.’” What Mr. Ballen is saying is that, because of this abuse from his father, Ammad felt he had to get his father’s love in any way possible, and in his culture the approval from one’s father is extremely crucial to having a good life. But because of these beatings, he turned to religion to find that love that he never got from his father. Cruelty was a huge factor in the novel; throughout Frankenstein is cruel to his body and to his creation. When he first makes the creature he runs from it, leaving the creature to fend for himself; even when reuniting with the creature he continues displays cruelty. The creature, in turn exhibits Victor cruelty right back. Within Frankenstein cruelty can be attributed, often affecting both Victor and the creature; serving as a crucial motivator and revealing their anger, pain, frustration till eventually both die.
Not only was this a force that drove Ishmael to becoming a child soldier, but it was a force that drove many children to becoming soldiers who killed anyone and everyone, in order for them to feel as if they had avenged the deaths of their family and loved ones. “…families have encouraged sons to join opposition groups as a means of avenging the deaths of family members or of seeking ‘blood revenge’” (Wessells). According to this text, it was actually a quite popular reason for people to have joined the armies at young ages. Children and adults alike both lost family members to the war, and the death of loved ones sparked anger as well as a will for revenge to get back at the people who killed their family and friends.

Throughout the novel Shelley emphasizes empathy as a critical humanistic trait. The monster displays his ability to empathize with people even though they are strangers. On the other hand Victor, fails to show empathy throughout the novel even when it relates to his own family and friends.
Once noted, the parallels between Frankenstein’s fears and desires and the reality the monster experiences are many. Now that Victor is in university, he no longer has family and friends to fall back upon in the unknown territory of his university. Frankenstein voices is that “[he] believed [himself] totally unfitted for the company of strangers,” irrational as it may be, and believes himself solely dependent on his family and childhood friend for companionship. Without the love guaranteed to him by his family, Victor believes he is unfit to make companions by himself and destined to a life of loneliness. He places much importance on the fact that his father and Elizabeth love him and are concerned with his well-being.

Frankenstein’s creature initially shows no signs of ill will or malice when first encountering human beings (Shelley 72-73). On the contrary, through careful observation he is able to learn more about human society and personal relationships. He begins to admire the close connection between the people he observes and respects their virtue. This, however, makes him realise what he is missing. Observing the love and affection between others only increases the effect his own solitude has on him.

Here, the creature assumes a role of submissiveness and reliance on Frankenstein. Frankenstein’s monster gains the sympathy of the reader who, despite condemning the murder of innocent people, commiserate with the lonely creature who is in search of an acquaintance, which he will likely never find.
